00:10 🔗 joepie91 dashcloud: not using KDE, but supposedly openSUSE still has very good KDE support/integration (even though afaik they switched main environment to GNOME a while ago)
00:10 🔗 dashcloud thanks!
00:18 🔗 * phillipsj likes the knoppix live DVD
00:19 🔗 godane SketchCow: i'm starting to upload scam school
00:51 🔗 SketchCow Great
00:52 🔗 * phillipsj still hasn't migrated off Yahoo!
00:54 🔗 phillipsj I was afraid to tell them I disagreed with their new TOS about 5 years ago. For that reason, I did not bother paying them for pop/IMAP access to get my e-mail.
01:31 🔗 blergh joepie91: you around?
01:31 🔗 joepie91 blergh: for certain values of "around", yes
01:32 🔗 blergh may i PM?
01:32 🔗 joepie91 sure :P
06:54 🔗 arkhive When I was in 4th 5th 6th or 7th grade (1999-2002) we used this little device to type papers when the computer lab was full.. It had a qwerty keyboard in a green plastic shell with a small black and white screen about the size of two gum sticks set horizontally. I think the screen was only used to show what you have typed and you could use arrow keys to
06:56 🔗 arkhive scroll up and read what couldn't be shown. When done typing the paper we used an IR connection to send the document to the device hub on the laptop mobile cart which would send to the printer. the device is the size of an ipad, though not the shape if that makes sense
06:57 🔗 arkhive anyway.. I'm wondering if anyone knows what these things were called and if anyone knows of a website that has info on them. Would be a nice nostalgia trip.
06:57 🔗 arkhive I think it was more like year 2000 we used them.
06:58 🔗 arkhive Heh, I remember in elementary school i think in grade 6 friends and I would sneak away and play Cro Mag Rally on the iMac's hah
06:59 🔗 arkhive anyway.. If anyone knows the name of the device or the type of device.. let me know please. :)
10:13 🔗 Lord_Nigh arkhive: alphasmart 3000 perhaps?
10:13 🔗 Lord_Nigh crap he left
15:45 🔗 Schbirid anyone know an easy way to upload to youtube into a specific user or channel or whatever google calls them? my email address has two accounts and i want to select the non default one for the upload
15:46 🔗 Schbirid youtube-uploaddoes not seem to support it and googlecl is complicated
15:48 🔗 Schbirid nevermind. you have to do that serverside. on youtube go to the account settings and set the other account to by used by "old apps"
15:48 🔗 Schbirid yay
16:30 🔗 chfoo SketchCow: can you move this under an archiveteam collection: https://archive.org/details/isohunt_facebook_page_snapshot
17:31 🔗 phillipsj arkhive I think those things were called "word processors". There existed typewriters with similar functionality, but those would have a built-in printer.
17:32 🔗 * phillipsj missed the he left comment
18:03 🔗 xmc phillipsj: he's talking about a device called an "alphasmart": http://www.neo-direct.com/
18:04 🔗 xmc also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaSmart
19:02 🔗 yipdw man, using the AWS API is a clusterfuck of identifiers
19:02 🔗 * yipdw is building tools to perform custom reports
19:10 🔗 M1das AWS/Amazon should die
19:11 🔗 M1das the API, the frontend, everything is just made by idiots
19:11 🔗 yipdw I don't know if it's made by idiots, but it definitely feels like it's made for people who speak Amazon
19:15 🔗 odie5533_ whats wrong with AWS?
21:18 🔗 ersi I'd say they both said two concrete or pretty concrete hints above
21:19 🔗 ersi 1) The API sucks 2) The API is annoying 3) The front end sucks
21:41 🔗 touya *sigh*
21:41 🔗 ersi There we go.
21:41 🔗 joepie91 hai :P
21:41 🔗 touya was sent here 3 times w/o being kicked from main chan
21:42 🔗 touya so i guess i'll go here :p
21:42 🔗 ersi Yeah, you took your sweet time in understanding ;-)
21:42 🔗 touya i get it
21:42 🔗 DFJustin we like to keep the main chan pretty clean so bat signals don't get lost in scrollback
21:42 🔗 joepie91 touya: kicking is generally counter-productive when you're trying to save half the internet :)
21:42 🔗 ersi I don't agree with your earlier statement that the most threatening things to archive are threatened by copyright
21:42 🔗 touya discussion about "what to archieve" doesn't belong there
21:42 🔗 touya or reasons
21:42 🔗 ersi We want to keep you around - and we want to keep #archiveteam clean and on-topic
21:43 🔗 joepie91 touya: no; #archiveteam is purely for practical things, really
21:43 🔗 DFJustin lots of times people wander in, type one line of "hey you should save this kbye" and then /part
21:43 🔗 touya yup
21:43 🔗 ersi this channel is for any discussions - archiving or anything else
21:43 🔗 ersi #archiveteam is for "getting archiving done" - not talking about archiving. Doing archiving.
21:43 🔗 touya sorry again, i didn't mean to disrupt
21:43 🔗 ersi If we do both in #archiveteam - important things can get lost
21:43 🔗 touya i was just thinking -bs was literally bullshi8t
21:44 🔗 ersi touya: No worries - I'm explaining these things because you ARE very welcome
21:44 🔗 touya like ppl talking about weather
21:44 🔗 ersi nah, it's just a moniker/joke part
21:44 🔗 ersi because having #archiveteam-offtopic sounds incredibly dull :)
21:44 🔗 touya all good :)
21:46 🔗 ersi indeed :)
21:46 🔗 touya joepie91: 2mins xmpp?
21:46 🔗 joepie91 in a moment
21:46 🔗 joepie91 X just crapped out
21:46 🔗 joepie91 so I have to restart some stuff
21:47 🔗 touya sure, won't be long. just a Q and your thoughts
22:05 🔗 Jacek If a site redirects to a file via an external site is it cool to replace the redirect with a direct link when archived?
22:07 🔗 DFJustin with WARC you can save the 302 response and handle it that way
22:08 🔗 Jacek I mean a crappy thing like adf.ly :P
22:09 🔗 DFJustin for a zip archive of the website files what I would do is offer both original and modified versions
22:10 🔗 ersi It's always nice to know what URL got you to the final storage location
22:10 🔗 joepie91 urgh, adf.ly
22:10 🔗 joepie91 that shit has to die
22:10 🔗 ersi Saving is better than not saving though
22:10 🔗 joepie91 a painful death
22:10 🔗 Jacek yes
22:10 🔗 Jacek obviously
22:10 🔗 Jacek But until peoepl learn :P
22:10 🔗 joepie91 the problem is that adf.ly is not a 302
22:10 🔗 joepie91 but a javascript redirect
22:10 🔗 joepie91 with a timer
22:10 🔗 joepie91 and an interstitial ad
22:11 🔗 joepie91 basically, "you can only continue to what this links to, after looking at an ad for 5 seconds"
22:11 🔗 joepie91 technically not a javascript redirect maybe, but that's what it comes down to
22:11 🔗 Jacek Or if the site that uses it is crap and shows the redirect URL in the address bar \o/
22:11 🔗 joepie91 it's similar to linkbucks
22:11 🔗 balrog http://dead.x10.mx/dead/
22:12 🔗 joepie91 balrog: afaik the context here was automated archiving though, I think
22:12 🔗 Jacek "Using this online Tool you can get original link without wait for 4-5 seconds"
22:12 🔗 Jacek flaw 1) It takes me 4-5 seconds to use it
22:12 🔗 balrog I've found that useful at times
22:12 🔗 balrog but yeah, replacing adfly is a good idea
22:12 🔗 balrog and yeah, do like wget
22:13 🔗 balrog rename the original, save the modified as a copy
22:13 🔗 Jacek I guess in the spirit of things both is a nice idea
22:13 🔗 joepie91 balrog, on that note; is there a particular reason for using wget in seesaw scripts as opposed to a native python module for downloading/WARCing things?
22:13 🔗 joepie91 that you know of?
22:14 🔗 balrog I don't really think it matters as long as proper warcs are produced
22:14 🔗 balrog not the biggest fan of wget myself
22:14 🔗 balrog oh, also make sure there's the ability to change the user agent in the python module
22:14 🔗 joepie91 was thinking of maybe writing a module for it
22:14 🔗 joepie91 with warc support and indeed stuff like useragent support
22:15 🔗 joepie91 and stuff like "replace this function to replace link follow behaviour"
22:15 🔗 joepie91 which is accomplished through lua scripting now
22:15 🔗 joepie91 which is suboptimal as you now need proficiency in *two* languages instead of one, to write a 'proper' pipeline
22:35 🔗 arkhive Thank you Lord_Nigh and xmc
22:36 🔗 xmc how did you see, arkhive?
22:36 🔗 arkhive The AlphaSmart 3000 is the exact one. Translucent and all.
22:36 🔗 arkhive badcheese.com
22:36 🔗 arkhive swebb's AT IRC logs
22:36 🔗 arkhive http://badcheese.com/~steve/atlogs/?chan=archiveteam-bs
22:36 🔗 xmc ohh
22:37 🔗 xmc yeah my brother had an alphasmart so I knew what you were talking about
22:38 🔗 Lord_Nigh yeah i heard what you were saying and i thought 'that sounds like the non-translucent alphasmart 2000 i have here, maybe the alphasmart 3000, which i knew existed, was translucent?'
22:38 🔗 arkhive Thanks :) Great seeing them again! heh.
22:38 🔗 Lord_Nigh the 2000 didn't always have the IR module installed
22:38 🔗 arkhive Yeah, according to wikipedia the 3000 was the translucent one
22:38 🔗 Lord_Nigh in fact the two as2000s i have here neither has the IR part
22:38 🔗 arkhive wikipedia lol
22:38 🔗 Lord_Nigh it was a $50 upgrade, the IR module
22:38 🔗 Lord_Nigh for the 2000
22:39 🔗 arkhive this had it built in. However, if wikipedia's article is accurate.. It mentioned smartApplets like a simple calculator program.. I don't remember that. But It HAS to be the 3000
22:40 🔗 arkhive so 5th grade heh.
22:40 🔗 arkhive this same color
22:40 🔗 arkhive http://www.ebay.com/itm/AlphaSmart-3000-Portable-Lightweight-Word-Processor-Fully-Tested-USB-Port-/251359742647?pt=BI_Typewriters_Word_Processors&hash=item3a86354ab7
22:44 🔗 ersi joepie91: wget has been used because of "less hassle". It does things decently
22:45 🔗 ersi joepie91: but I wouldn't mind a python version ;)
22:47 🔗 arkhive Hmm.. I wish I could remember the exact cart or AlphaHub we used. I remember sending it through IR to have it print.. Anyway.. Thanks :)
22:48 🔗 joepie91 ersi: alrigght
22:48 🔗 joepie91 er
22:48 🔗 joepie91 alright *
