I think there should be a "black hole" archival setup |
02:18
π
|
kyan |
I often have wanted to archive personal things without posting them online immediately, so it would be really cool to have a way to say that something shouldn't be published for, say, 100 years or something |

kyan |
e.g. that way I could post personal medical records, etc that would present an identity theft risk, but they'd be safe ? and then they would be released when it no longer mattered |

kyan |
Also could apply to data with unknown or restricted copyright, so that it could be archived, then released once it had reached the maximum amount of time it could possibly not be public domain |

Or even just web history. I can imagine historians having a lot of fun 500 years from now looking at people's web history. Aaanyway, ... </rant> |

I'd say store it in a bank vault with instructions, but I seriously don't know if you can have it just stored there for eternity |
02:23

thing is, electronic media degrade |
02:23
π
|
kyan |
they need to be scrubbed regularly, even with a resiliant filesystem eg. zfs |
02:24
π
|
kyan |
as far as i know, there's no affordable digital medium in existence that can store GBs of data for 100+ years without maintenance |
02:24

|
kyan |
(The thought was kind of inspired by Aaron swartz' request that the contents of his hard drives be posted publicly when he died) |
02:25
π
|
kyan |
(I don't know if that ever happened ? but the chances of it happening if he had copyrgihted stuff, for example, is basically zero, since by the time it becomes PD the executor of his will will probably be retired) |

but the problem with digital is that you need to correctly predict multiple items for the future, pretty much all of which need to be correct |

heh, how ironic is is that I see new talks of SC's on his wikipedia page (even more irony in this fact) and the textfiles one gets updated just now with the ones that weren't on there |
07:54
π
|
BlueMaxim |
aaaaand now you've got me watching all of SC's videos again |
07:54
π
|
BlueMaxim |
thanks wp494 I appreciate it |
07:59

|

if I had ten million dollars I'd just give it all to SC just to get him to do 1-hour talks for the rest of his life |

if anyone wanted to place this updated version of the ExoDOS DOS game collection on the archive it would probably be worth the time to do so https://kickass.to/exodos-2-0-collection-t9562328.html (I do apologize for the public source but it was the only real source I could find, if I see a more reliable source I'll post it here) |

I actually do have a better source but it's on a private tracker with satanic seeding rules |

aaaaaaaaa |
That video also has those introductions I hate. 15 minutes of some guy talking about the guy who is going to talk, rather than giving the real speaker 15 extra minutes. Plus speakers almost always do a short intro on themselves, anyway. |

My boss is not in the audience. |
