00:07 πŸ”— kyan It's not massive here
00:07 πŸ”— kyan There's a lot, but not as much as some places.
00:07 πŸ”— kyan There are also more support resources for poor people here.
00:13 πŸ”— Sketchcow 22 percent of children live in Poverty in the US
00:17 πŸ”— kyan So? 85% of everyone is impoverished in Liberia
00:17 πŸ”— kyan I'll take America, thank you very much
00:21 πŸ”— kyan Considering that the law says I'm living in poverty, I think American poverty isn't that bad β€”Β I've got Internet access, running water, a house, and a university scholarship. Look at it that way and I'm pretty damn well off
00:22 πŸ”— kyan It's the people who are in worse poverty that have problems β€” homeless, etc
00:23 πŸ”— kyan Like 1% of Americans are homeless
00:23 πŸ”— kyan They probably suffer significantly from it
00:25 πŸ”— kyan 4.397 million people live in Liberia. 1.4 million of them are homeless children. That's like 25%.
00:26 πŸ”— kyan I still think America's got it
00:32 πŸ”— Ravenloft I do think at least 1/3 of the world population would love to poor in US
00:32 πŸ”— Ravenloft *to be

20:53 πŸ”— swebb SmileyG: I'm sorry, but I'm in the US. I'm really sorry to hear that you were canned during the holidays - why do companies do that? I know that in the US, the job market is pretty good for linux sysadmins, so keep your chin up. Perhaps take some time off and learn AWS or something that you can add to your resume while you're looking for job.
20:53 πŸ”— SmileyG yeah I've done a little bit with AWS
20:53 πŸ”— SmileyG just everything is rusty D:
20:57 πŸ”— swebb I wrote an app when I was out of work to bulk-send resumes out so I could carpet-bomb the job market with resumes to get a job asap. I had written a little php program that would take a name & email and send a form letter with my resume attached to the email and add each record to a database. I also put a tracking pixel in the email, so I knew if the guy even opened the email to look at my resume. I scowered the internet for jobs in my area
20:57 πŸ”— swebb every morning and entered them into my little app - it only took 45 mins or so every morning. I could even do it from my phone since it was a simple php form that I put on my home web server, so if/when a new job popped up, I could send out my resume in a few minutes with very little effort. I got a ton of responses and could take my pick of jobs and was hired in a very short period of time.
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG I don't think I need to go that far yet
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG It happened this morning
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG got home, immediately on job sites
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG applied to.. 12 jobs
21:00 πŸ”— swebb I had a bunch of spare time when I was laid off. :)
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG within 20 min I had one email from a 'CEO'
21:00 πŸ”— SmileyG swebb: nod
21:01 πŸ”— SmileyG also wife and friends still work at old job (before this one)
21:01 πŸ”— SmileyG I left due to headcount and ending of fixed term contract (and a manager that hated me)
21:01 πŸ”— SmileyG That manager is gone, my old maanger said he's happy for me to apply but said it had to be today as HR were sorting interviews as we speak
21:01 πŸ”— swebb It was nice to have it all automated though. I even sent off resumes once from my phone while waiting in the lobby of another company while waiting for a job interview there. :)
21:01 πŸ”— SmileyG so if _anyone_ doesn't fit the bill/turn up then I'm in with a chance
21:02 πŸ”— SmileyG I'm hoping, with how incompetent they are, they'll just ignore someone to let me back in lol
21:02 πŸ”— swebb Bad managers suck to work with/for.
21:02 πŸ”— swebb Probably a good thing you're out of there then.
21:02 πŸ”— SmileyG yeah this guy hated my guts for calling him out for being crap lol
21:02 πŸ”— i0npulse Depending on finances, a week or two to break is always good before diving back into the deep end of the pool.
21:02 πŸ”— SmileyG sadly he was then in the interviews for 'keeping me on after the fixed term ended'
21:03 πŸ”— SmileyG he wasn't meant to be in that interview, but insisted
21:03 πŸ”— i0npulse Also... experimenting and having some fun with some cool tech is always good.
21:03 πŸ”— SmileyG i0npulse: I'd love to wait, cept.... buying a hosue and another baby on way.
21:04 πŸ”— i0npulse Ah I see, then yea, I can understand why you would need to get something going sooner rather than later.
21:07 πŸ”— SmileyG yeah
21:10 πŸ”— i0npulse I left a job I was at for 4 years, because I had never *learned* how to properly find a job. People would call me up, say "We will give you money, do you want it?" and I would say "Sure!"
21:11 πŸ”— i0npulse However I never learned the skills to actually find jobs with intent on my send.
21:12 πŸ”— i0npulse Being a bit underpaid, and unhappy with the direction of the team/company I was working for, I quit.
21:13 πŸ”— i0npulse Only to then find out I was horribly behind (Spend all of your time archving/learning to archiving outside of work, and poor work environment tech-wise can errode some skillsets).
21:15 πŸ”— i0npulse What worked really well for me, was to apply to 3 jobs a day minimum, and then work hard each day to advance my skills in the areas that the job listings wanted (and I also wanted to learn).
21:16 πŸ”— i0npulse Every single day that passed I had a better chance of landing the job I wanted.
21:19 πŸ”— i0npulse Anyways, just adding some perspective given I went through this a few years ago.
