17:24 🔗 Lord_Nigh <ivan> heh you can't read the imdb forums in wayback because of imdb's robots.txt :(
17:24 🔗 Lord_Nigh wait, is that the reason for the behavior change? the lawsuit against imdb by actors due to the age crap?
17:25 🔗 Lord_Nigh i mean the change in archive.org behavior, where robots.txt now accepts "User_Agent: *" when doing retroactive blocking, instead of only using ia_archiver

20:17 🔗 Lord_Nigh SketchCow: when going thru computer stuff, keep an eye out for that discferret cable, it probably got mixed in with other floppy stuff
20:18 🔗 SketchCow Yes
20:18 🔗 SketchCow Ah yes
20:18 🔗 SketchCow Yes
20:18 🔗 SketchCow That's EXACTLY what you needed to respond to Evan with
20:18 🔗 SketchCow When I was here
20:18 🔗 SketchCow Fucking here
20:18 🔗 SketchCow In 5 channels we share
20:18 🔗 SketchCow But don't worry, Evan passed it along
20:18 🔗 Lord_Nigh i DID send that to evan actually, yesterday
20:18 🔗 Lord_Nigh sorry
20:19 🔗 Lord_Nigh i can't tell when you're on irc or not
20:19 🔗 SketchCow Did you think I'm sitting on it and was waiting for Evan to give me the goahead?
20:19 🔗 SketchCow No cables are going tomorrow anyway, it's all machinery
20:19 🔗 SketchCow Lots of machinery
20:19 🔗 Lord_Nigh no, i thought you might discover it while you and evan were going through stuff, sorry.

20:19 🔗 SketchCow By the time it's gone, I will have gone through a lot of things
20:20 🔗 SketchCow I'm sure if I find your thing I will get you your thing
20:20 🔗 SketchCow There's a lot of things
20:20 🔗 Lord_Nigh ok, i won't bother you about it again
20:20 🔗 SketchCow don't make promises you fundamentally can't keep
20:20 🔗 Lord_Nigh I said i won't bother you about *IT* again. doesn't mean i won't bother you about other things :P
20:21 🔗 xmc lol
20:22 🔗 Lord_Nigh Look, I'm sorry I brought it up, just forget about it.
20:22 🔗 xmc but if he forgets about it, the cable won't get found or whatever
20:23 🔗 Lord_Nigh ... forget that "I brought it up", i meant. not that.
20:24 🔗 Lord_Nigh Speaking of floppy stuff, i was talking to peter ferrie about the "project applesauce" usb device, which looks like it will be very cool for imaging apple2 disks in a way which actually preserves the protection data, denecessitating cracks for a lot of things
20:25 🔗 Lord_Nigh I still need to get more info about it, I'm hoping it doesn't end up in a legal clusterfuck like the kryoflux stuff does, but I'm cautiously optimisitic
20:25 🔗 xmc kool
20:26 🔗 Lord_Nigh the PA device once its done requires an actual DiskII drive (or a unidisk 5.25, I think may also work)
20:29 🔗 SketchCow Applesauce is going to win the game.
20:30 🔗 SketchCow It's done with a lot of collaboration, an open approach and no assholes
20:30 🔗 Lord_Nigh thank god.
20:30 🔗 Lord_Nigh i was asking henry if it has provisions for use in the older DiskII drives (shugart SA390) which have an unpopulated hole for an index sensor, which you can steal from an SA400 drive and populate if you so desire
20:31 🔗 Lord_Nigh the newer diskII drives (Alps somethingoranother) don't have anywhere to mount the index sensor
20:31 🔗 Lord_Nigh would require adding an extra wire from the drive to the Applesauce board for the index signal
20:31 🔗 Lord_Nigh but this would allow for absolute positioning within all tracks on the disk, which i think is much more accurate than dead reckoning
20:32 🔗 Lord_Nigh also it allows measuring RPM for each track so if a track has mold/goo/bad binder and slows down the disk rotation, the PA device could see that
20:33 🔗 xmc this is some turbo nerd shit
20:33 🔗 Lord_Nigh SketchCow: since i'm not "in" on the collaboration groupe on Applesauce, and my emails to henry might not be arriving, can you pass that along?
20:34 🔗 Lord_Nigh (or maybe just ask henry to check his email on some of the older mailboxes)
20:35 🔗 Lord_Nigh random fact: the very oldest DiskII drives (serial numbers less than 400 or so) may actually have the index sensor present!
20:36 🔗 Lord_Nigh but it isn't plugged into anything
20:46 🔗 Lord_Nigh ok enough nerding out, back to regularly scheduled #archiveteam-bs
20:47 🔗 JAA "GameTitleMapImageUrlPartialPath". I guess it's better than the alternative "gtmiupp", but they really couldn't come up with a better name?
20:50 🔗 joepie91 JAA: ahhh, the good old "keep adding words until it describes the thing, in arbitrary order" variable naming strategy
20:50 🔗 joepie91 :p
20:51 🔗 joepie91 JAA: you'd be surprised how many people are utterly hopeless at naming variables, btw
20:51 🔗 joepie91 including otherwise competent programmers
20:51 🔗 Lord_Nigh GetAtomicCanonicalConfigFilePathOverride
20:51 🔗 Lord_Nigh I made that one up but i'm sure worse exists
20:52 🔗 joepie91 for programmers reading along who need a better strategy: don't try to describe what the variable contains, and don't try to abbreviate it, but cut down on words until you're using the absolute minimum amount of words necessary to *distinguish it from the variables surrounding it*
20:53 🔗 joepie91 if you have two apples, name them `redApple` and `greenApple` -- if you have an apple and a pear, don't name them `redApple` and `pear`, just name them `apple` and `pear` (as an analogy)
20:53 🔗 joepie91 the point is to distinguish the contents, not to describe them :P
20:53 🔗 joepie91 </ramble>
20:54 🔗 Lord_Nigh my naming strategy in C/C++ is: iterators get i,j,k,l,...etc single letter names and get initialized in the scope they're used in only. member variables etc are m_variablename and don't necessarily follow camelcase, but try to describe closely but not overly verbosely what they contain.
20:54 🔗 Lord_Nigh so pretty much what you said
20:54 🔗 joepie91 right, but 'describing what they contain' is not a tenable long-term strategy as your variables will become longer and longer as the application complexity increases
20:54 🔗 joepie91 the trick is to offload the "what" to the context in which the variable is used
20:55 🔗 joepie91 and just describe the "how is it different from those other ones"
20:55 🔗 xmc this is extremely bs
20:55 🔗 JAA Whenever I have more than one iterator, I use descriptive indices. For example, in the context of Razer Arena, I'd use iTournament, iMatch, iTeam, iPlayer, etc.
20:55 🔗 JAA Makes it much less likely to confuse the indices.
20:56 🔗 Lord_Nigh true, if you have enough iterators in the same scope
20:56 🔗 JAA On the other hand, I'm mostly using Python now, where it's simply `for match in tournament['Matches']`.
20:57 🔗 JAA Most of the time anyway
21:05 🔗 JAA Uh oh, I saw that Razer Arena also has match playbacks. Those will be massive.
