hook54321Someone is threatening me legally about us scraping the Mozilla Addons site. [02:29]
Froggingwho? mozilla? or some random tard? [02:30]
hook54321Someone that's part of the Pale Moon development team. [02:31]
Frogginghuh. why would they even care? [02:31]
hook54321They said "and if anything I have said or created on AMO i will hold YOU responsible for illegal redistrubution of copywritten content" [02:34]
Froggingdoesn't sound terribly friendly. doesn't sound credible either [02:35]
hook54321then they said "specifically I have a lightweight theme.. if it is in your scrapped dump of AMO i want it removed at once"
which is a little better
Is there a chance that I'm going to need to get a lawyer?
[02:36]
Froggingno [02:38]
hook54321He's claimed that Mozilla can host the content legally but IA can't, is that true?
*He
I'm assuming it would depend on Mozilla's ToS
[02:39]
astridhe owns his shit, he can decide who can do what with it and on what terms
legally
practically, he can't really stop much
[02:40]

Frogginghook54321: listen, ultimately it doesn't matter. worst-case scenario, it gets darked. and I don't even see that as likely [02:42]
hook54321Could Mozilla extend that to letting IA host it? [02:42]
Froggingyou'd have to ask a lawyer to get an answer that isn't useless. but I don't believe it's of practical importance [02:44]
hook54321I've tried talking to this guy before, he sounds kinda like Paul Andrew Mitchell, probably not as bad as him but meh. [02:46]
astridhow bout u ignore him [02:49]
Frogging^ [02:49]
hook54321I'm tempted to ignore it from the grab. Someone tell me that I'm forbidden from doing that. [02:54]
astridyou can put it in an item of its own [02:55]
Froggingif we listened to every random arse that tells us not to archive shit, we'd never get anywhere. [02:56]
astrid"dark this if you want, but you're not getting any collateral damage out of it" [02:56]
Froggingits own item sounds good [02:56]
hook54321Should I tell him that I ignored it or no? [03:03]
Also, something else he said earlier:
"putting it on the wayback machine literally infrenges on the rights of thousands
why do you think i abandoned OUR plans to create a mirror
because the legal issues involved are massive"

JAAhook54321: Of course it is. Everything is copyrighted the moment you create it. Including this message, for example. You can release your creation under a certain license which gives other people certain rights, usually accompanied by some requirements. For example, by releasing something under CC-BY, you grant everyone the rights to modify, redistribute, commercially exploit, etc. your content as long
as they attribute the (original) work to you. You can also dedicate content to the public domain, thereby waiving your copyright and giving everyone the rights to use the content however they like (without having to mention you at all).
[13:17]
(Don't get me started on copyright expiration.) [13:22]
Kim___If you do that - can others take a patent on some work that you did..like.. you write 99% of some code, then someone adds another 1% and then take apatent. Can the orginal writer use the basic code for something else? [13:24]
JAASoftware patents are the epitome of evil. [13:25]
Kim___Hehe - So I have herd [13:25]
JAAFirst, I think they would only own the copyright on that 1% they modified/added. You still hold the copyright of the original code and can do with it whatever you like. You might have to prove though that their work was based on your code, and that your code existed before their patent.
Second, they should only be able to get a patent on their own work and only if that 1% is actually a significant, non-obvious improvement. In reality, they'll probably get a patent if they fix a typo.
See e.g. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/07/stupid-patent-month-hp-patents-reminder-messages
[13:27]
Kim___lol
The patent office has an auto responce "approved" when you apply for a new software patent it looks like
incredeble
[13:28]
JAAYes, but with a delay of a few years. [13:29]
Kim___ofcourse - it have to look like they actuarly do something for the cost of a patent
hence the latency
[13:30]
JAAIndeed.
Here's another great one: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/02/stupid-patent-month-ibm-patents-out-office-email

***Lagittaja has joined #archiveteam-bs [13:31]
JAAThe key problem is that the patent office only looks into previous patents, not into real world applications. [13:32]
Kim___wauw - fantastic.. a autoreply email patent.... why dident I think of that? I could have been rich [13:32]
JAAWell, mostly at least. [13:33]
LagittajaKim___: yeah well I'm using the hyper-v version, did try import from the ova version just for giggles but seems about the same (after updating the kernel etc). it churns along just fine but accessing the interface is painful to say the least [13:33]
Kim___that sounds like the warrior indeed ;) [13:34]
JAAScripts in tmux on Debian ftw [13:36]
Kim___I cant remember who is workin on a new and improved warrior, but if you have time and skills to spare - all the help is welcome [13:36]
JAAjrwr did something. He basically just set up a minimal VM which uses the existing Docker warrior image. [13:36]
Lagittajatime I do have plenty of but unfortunately I'm a hardware guy through and through :D [13:37]

Kim___I actuarly have a wird issue on one of my laptops.. I run the warrior in Virtualbox, but the only job it seems to accept is the URLTE.AMproject. I would like to run the newsgrabber project.. however. I have another laptop running the newsgrabber project.. is each IP limited to only 1 PC running the newsgrabber project? [13:42]
JAAI doubt it. [13:43]
Kim___tried to install the VM several times, waited 24 hours, but the project is just listed as "the warrior is starting on a project" and then hangs there?? [13:43]
Lagittajamy two vm's are both on newsgrabber afaik [13:43]
Kim___its just wierd.. its only the URLteam project that can run on it.
it's not the most powerfull mashine, but, its faster than the one I'm using right now - and have this one is running the newsgrabber project.
[13:44]
JAANo idea, I never used the warrior (I wouldn't let that security-issue-infested thing anywhere near my networks), I just know that it's sometimes a bit unpredictable.
Honestly, if I had a non-Linux machine which can't run the scripts directly, I'd just set up my own minimal VM with Debian stable or whatever and run the scripts in there.
[13:45]
Kim___Humm.. I tried to launch a VM, and then follow the guide on how to install the scripts and needed programs manuarly - but no real luck:P [13:46]
JAAThat said, I think NewsGrabber is a bit more challenging to get running because it has different software requirements than other projects. [13:46]
Kim___exactly what I did, but my linux skills is well.. minimal at bedst. [13:46]
JAA(For most projects, you just need wget-lua and seesaw.) [13:46]
Kim___but.. its the exact same warrior ovm file that is working on thuis laptop, and... I have tried several times.
does not matter really. Hopefully soon I will get myselfa new workstation, and then the elderly I7-860 will move onto become a unraid server. that will then run the warrior docker and other fun stuff..
[13:47]
LagittajaI'll probably look into running this stuff manually when I get my older pc up and running as a server of sorts [13:50]
Kim___how much diffrence is there between the diffrent distros reallt when it comes to the terminal? Debian vs ubutu vs slackware vs... [13:50]
Lagittajawell ubuntu is based on debian so they're quite similar. slackware is quite different [13:50]
Kim___cheers for that Lagittaja :)
a bit like BSD vs linux?
[13:50]
Lagittajapersonally I would just stick with debian for this kind of stuff, basically server so you'd want something really solid [13:51]
JAAReminds me that I should really play around more with other systems. I chose Debian many years ago for a server and then just stuck with that when I switched my laptop and other machines from Windows to a real OS. [13:52]
Lagittajauhm well bsd vs linux is a whole different story. just terminal wise, debian/ubuntu vs slackware you use different commands [13:53]
Kim___soo, in generalthe 2 systems are build up diffrently, structual wise [13:53]
JAAAre you talking about how to install software or in general (Debian vs Slackware)?
I imagine you still have all the common tools like coreutils etc.
[13:53]
Kim___naa, more like a general feel of the diffrent distros.. Debian would be the simpliest to learn I gather from diffrent sources. I have tried to jump the wagon soo many times, but the learningcurve is steep when you are brand new in a OS
I dont have any friends that I can get any help from, otherwise that would help alot. The local linux community is nonexisting -
A server like the unraid where I could play with Linux when I had time would be awesome, I think its called KVM? you can passthrow hardware in Unraid, and then give a OS a gfxcard, and USB devices.. Then it would be as simple as grabbing aother set of keyboard/mouse and flip a switch on the monitor, and you would be on a Linux VM, just as it would be on bare metal.
[13:55]
Lagittajayou'll just have to read up on them and try them out
biggest difference probably is the package manager and some commands are different. if you're talking about desktop experience well that's whole another rabbit hole with a slew of different environments to choose from
[13:59]
JAARight, that's what I thought. [14:02]
Lagittajabasically just try and see what you like. if you're most familiar with debian/ubuntu, go from there, try different derivatives or if you want to hop to a different tree, well I'd probably start with the big daddy distro of that tree [14:03]
Kim___Ofcourse. So in general.. Whats under the hood, and how it works under the hood is more or less the same, but the design of the car is diffrent.. [14:04]
Lagittajahttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg this is always fun to look at, have you seen this image before Kim___ [14:05]
Kim___I think I'll just give the diffrent distros a run whenever I get a proper server that i can fool aroudn with
wauw :D So many diffrent branches of Debian... Thats kinda cool -
not enough pixels on my monitor..

I mention this here because there was some discussion a while ago about how Heritrix stores DNS data in WARCs. It does *not* store the request, and it stores the response as text (in the same format as zone files) rather than the on-the-wire binary format.
