00:34 🔗 MrRadar One of my favorite Youtubers just put up a video about a film that attempts to reconstruct lost films: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fxJ79qED0Y
00:35 🔗 MrRadar At the end he meditates on how art becomes lost over the ages, and how it's a tragedy film is not immune even though it's a medium that's only 100 years old
00:36 🔗 MrRadar Then he asks: what will happen to today's digital streaming content?
00:36 🔗 MrRadar I think that's why a lot of us are here

16:26 🔗 ola_norsk i am quite new to IA..I notice the title "Practical Computing 1983 Decemberr" probably is a typo. Is there some way to suggest correction of such, without necessarily hassling the uploader?
16:44 🔗 ola_norsk I guess what i'm imagining is a version control system of sorts. Where e.g changes to *_meta.xml file, on an item can be suggested without it inevitably relying on the uploader.

16:49 🔗 ola_norsk e.g I've uploaded some srt subtitles to my items. If other people were able to add, or especially correct my srt files. That would be awesome.
16:56 🔗 SketchCow has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
16:59 🔗 astrid that would be, yes
16:59 🔗 astrid no such mechanism exists
17:05 🔗 ola_norsk i have uploaded those same srt files to github. but..Imagine the following: Person A uploads an item, and goes away, never to come back. The metadata is seemingly lacking a lot of e.g "subject" tags. Person B comes along, adds some tags. The tags do no yet become added to the item though. A week later however, Person C adds some subject tags; Of which some of tags are identical to Person B's tag suggestions..Then a "Wait for admi
17:05 🔗 ola_norsk n" alert goes off, if need be; And the matching tags could be decided to become added.
17:05 🔗 * ola_norsk just broke his own brain

17:41 🔗 ola_norsk the admin would just need to review the "diff" of changes proposed, for any naughtiness . And choose to either accept the "pull", implementing the changes, vote "nay", or leave it as undecided for some other admin to review.
17:43 🔗 JAA Certainly nobody would ever think of abusing this to annoy the admins. Noone would ever do something like that on the internet.
17:43 🔗 ola_norsk or, in case of many Admins..vote "Yes, this change is OK by me"..and then another Admin also gets to review it
17:43 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA of course not
17:44 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA people are never sarcastic or snarky on the internet
17:45 🔗 JAA Of course not.
17:47 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA how could it be used to "annoy admins" though? Are you suggesting a case where people would sign up for multiple accounts, spamming changes, just for the heck of it?
17:49 🔗 ola_norsk i don't know how IA's "Admin alert" works in the backend though. But i can't really imagine they phone is ringing off the hook and alarm bells ringing off above their beds.
17:52 🔗 JAA Yeah, exactly that. The real changes would get buried in spam, and someone would have to got through all of it manually to find those that aren't spam.
17:52 🔗 astrid admin alert?
17:53 🔗 JAA I don't know how much of a problem it would really be, but it just seems like a feature that would beg for abuse by idiots...
17:53 🔗 ola_norsk i mean "Wait for Admin" status on an item
17:53 🔗 astrid ohhh
17:53 🔗 astrid that's called a "redrow" because it shows up in the job list as a red ... row
17:53 🔗 astrid there are thousands of them
17:54 🔗 ola_norsk I can imagine that is the case. But who's expecting metadata changes to be instant?
17:56 🔗 JAA "there are thousands of them" == "We don't have time to go through them at all"?
17:56 🔗 Atom has joined #archiveteam-bs
17:57 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA i had one on one of my items, simply beeing a noob and trying to add a zip file of related images
17:57 🔗 ola_norsk It sparked "Wait for Admin", for "added files to end of item"
17:57 🔗 ola_norsk so it's understandable
18:03 🔗 ola_norsk However, what i'm talking about would really be in the "when we/someone gets to it" in priority.
18:04 🔗 ola_norsk the world doesnt catch fire from a simple Title typo, after all
18:12 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA while i do see your point perfectly, i ask you to consider that even just the Upload button is just as begging for abuse
18:13 🔗 hook54321 Fun fact: You can modify the HTML on the edit item details page and attempt to change things that had read only fields. It'll wait for review by an admin though.
18:13 🔗 pizzaiolo has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
18:14 🔗 JAA ola_norsk: True. I'm not sure how much abuse IA sees from that, but I guess there's certainly some. However, that doesn't really affect anything. It'll "just" create an unnecessary item and waste some storage, but it doesn't alter the data uploaded by other people, possibly listed in popular collections, etc.
18:15 🔗 ola_norsk hook54321, well that answers that :)
18:16 🔗 hook54321 This might be a little relevant to this conversation, but I've heard I think in one Jason's videos that IA would love wikification of metadata and stuff in some way, but they just don't have that ability yet, I think it was related to their budget.
18:17 🔗 ola_norsk @JAA Neither am i. I'm sure there's some abuse though. But, i'm not talking about a complete item copy, THAT would indeed waste space. I'm talking just metadata additions/changes.
18:19 🔗 JAA ola_norsk: I was talking about the upload button abuse; that wastes storage because the stuff that is uploaded to spam items would generally be garbage. A metadata change obviously wouldn't waste much storage (if any).
18:20 🔗 JAA (Actually, a metadata change wouldn't really "waste" anything. It would use a tiny bit of storage, but that's really negligible.)
18:20 🔗 ola_norsk yeah
18:23 🔗 ola_norsk It would be cool if someone other than me, some day, was able to suggest corrections to my srt subtitles though..I'm pretty sure they have numerous flaws, and i'm not immortal
18:27 🔗 ola_norsk hook54321, would you happen to have link to that video? Either way, sounds like that would be what i'm currently fantazing about.
18:29 🔗 hook54321 It might have been somewhere in this video... I'm not completely sure though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn_WPK-xFoQ
18:29 🔗 ola_norsk ty
18:31 🔗 ola_norsk it would be scary if i was the first coming up with such an idea :d
18:46 🔗 ola_norsk hook54321, "files burning out of windows" hahaha
18:51 🔗 ola_norsk Anyway, i hope to see that wiki/diff ability, some day, on IA. One doesn't need to adhere to politics to adhere to the importance of preserving history and knowledge of the past :)
