AsparagirHey Archive Team. I talked to SketchCow and he says he is okay if we want to go ahead and join Open Collective to start fundraising for Archive Team. This would mean that we would not have to form a real 501(c)(3) non-profit org, and could start asking for funding for projects under Open Collective's umbrella: https://opencollective.com/
We would need multiple admins for this, to make sure no one person has all the authority or all the access or all the $$$. SketchCow is up for being one of them, I'm up for being one of them, and we would need at least two or more other people to step up too. Ideally we should have like eight people, since we don't have an organizatioal hierarchy at all.
I'm going to start the sign-up process, which could take a few days for approvals. If this goes well, we could get much-needed fundng for two pressing issues: 1) pay for developer time, at least five hour chunks, to work on our big backlog of bugs and feature requests and technical debt (bugs first, though), and 2) pay for more servers for ArchiveBot so we can grab way more stuff at a time.
And we could pay for other stuff down the road, if anyone has suggestions for things we should be fundraising for.
[04:12]
chfoothat sounds like a good idea [04:23]
Asparagiryes! and I was totally hoping we could hire YOU ass one of those coders, if you're interested in getting paid for it?
er, *as :-)
yipdw would be great too, but he says he's just too busy right now to get hired on this at all, even as a small part-time thing.
This of course assumes that we will be able to raise money at all.
But an awful lot of the other groups on Open Collective have raised hundreds of dollars a month.
And gotten sponsors!
If we had $500 coming in a month to pay you, or another coder, to do a few hours of much needed code clean-up and bug squashing, that would be awesome.
[04:25]
chfooit would be nice, wpull and the warrior need updates [04:27]
AsparagirThey really do
And if we had another $80 coming in a month, that's two more pipeline servers for ArchiveBot right there.
It's basically Patreon for open source projects.
chfoo: if we were able to raise a few hundred a month, are you up for being hired for a few hours to get paid to do Archive Team work?
hypothetically?
[04:27]
chfooyes, i think very likely [04:31]
Asparagiryay!
JAA and I have written up our wishlist of the most pressing bugs and issues, but we can save that for another day
Getting youtube-dl to grab videos again is up there, though.
[04:32]
..... (idle for 20mn)
Somebody2Asparagir: congrads! and chfoo: yay! [04:53]
AsparagirSomebody2: wanna be one of the admins? the more the merrier!
And having lots of admins keeps us all honest because we all see the money coming in and going out, and can approve it (or not)

IglooI like the idea, But i'd rather spend the $ on development than pipelines, we have enough for demand now
I like how that element is personal, makes it easier to maintain (in my opinion). But I also think we need to change how we handle the pipelines, Some users need to be able to access all of them
For updates etc as falconk's are a bit dead.

AsparagirOkay, discussion from #archivebot is moving here.
We're discussing having Archive Team set up to receive donations through Open Collective, which is like Patreon for open source projects.
[22:23]
***hook54321 sets mode: +o Asparagir [22:23]
AsparagirUnder construction (not set up to accept donations yet): https://opencollective.com/archiveteam/ [22:24]
hook54321Does Open Collective have any relationship with the Software Freedom Law Center or the Software Freedom Conservancy? [22:25]
AsparagirI will ask in the Slack
It seems like Open Collective would mean that we would *not* have to form an LLC or a corporation or set up our bank account or bookkeeper or any of that stuff
From Slack: "piamancini [2:18 PM]
yep, we would be your fiscal sponsor, receive the funds for you and manage your expenses and bookkeeping
[2:18]
you can read more about hosts here: github.com/opencollective/opencollective/wiki"
We would need more "Core contributors" to sign up. Those would be "members of your collective, they can approve/reject expenses and have editing rights."
Right now there are two listed, me and astrid. SketchCow is next to get added. But we should spread the power around. (This doesn't do anything *yet* because Open Collective still needs to hook up our org to their bank and all that.)

hook54321How does the approval process for expenses work? Do all of them have to approve an expense, only one, a certain number? [22:33]
AsparagirGot response from Slack about your question about Software Freedom Law Center or the Software Freedom Conservancy: "We are not related to them, but we were actually just talking to them to become a host on the platfrom
[2:36]
is this something that you'd be interested in?"

opencollective.slack.com
So I don't have to keep cutting and pasting questions and answers
And that goes for everyone here, not just hook54321 -- feel free to ask them whatever
[22:41]
hook54321lol yeah, this is like what I was doing with JAA a few days ago. We were 'playing telephone' between 2 different irc channels and I was the person relaying stuff :P
"Contact the workspace administrator for an invitation"
[22:42]
AsparagirLet me see if I can find one [22:45]
hook54321I think it might be specific to the email address
An admin of the slack might have to send me an invite
[22:45]
Asparagirmore answers:
"Just one admin can approve"
"With regards to SFC if that person knows them and wants to reach out to them we’d love to work with them"
