22:21 🔗 godane pattern url is different
22:22 🔗 jason0597 what are people's reccomendations for a filesystem to put on an archival drive?
22:30 🔗 Ctrl has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out)
22:55 🔗 Raccoon what is the nature of the drive and archive. ie, if you're using removable portable 2.5" USB drives primarily or exclusively on Windows systems and they're just write-once-read-many purpose... I'd go for FAT32 (2TB) or exFAT.
22:56 🔗 BlueMax has joined #archiveteam-bs
22:56 🔗 Raccoon the most system compatable filesystem is FAT32, and works on almost all embedded devices.
22:56 🔗 jason0597 it's cold storage normal hard drive
22:56 🔗 jason0597 brand new 2TB
22:57 🔗 jason0597 yeah i was thinking of exFAT
22:57 🔗 Raccoon keep whatever it's got if it's already FAT32. exFAT if you want to use your built-in Windows OS formatter software. You'll need third-party software to format FAT32 on anything larger than 32 GB, even though 2TB is supported.
22:58 🔗 jason0597 i was thinking of just running mkfs.exfat on it
22:58 🔗 jason0597 i run linux
22:58 🔗 Raccoon not all embedded equipment, ie, photo kiosks and smart TVs, support exFAT. Some do.
22:58 🔗 Raccoon well, photo kiosks are more likely to support exfat. smart tvs not so much
22:59 🔗 jason0597 i don't think i'll hook this SATA drive onto a photo kiosk or a smart TV ever
22:59 🔗 Raccoon ++
22:59 🔗 Raccoon when I think of "archive" i think of "what will work on almost everything in the uncertainty of 20 years from now?"
23:00 🔗 jason0597 ohh i'm not that worried about it
23:00 🔗 jason0597 i was thinking of plugging it into a PC every year to check if it's still alive
23:00 🔗 Raccoon but either of the FATs are great for cold storage
23:00 🔗 jason0597 and maybe migrate to a new drive every 5 years
23:00 🔗 Raccoon aka write-once-read-sometimes
23:00 🔗 JAA Although Microsoft finally released the exFAT specification last year, it's still patent-encumbered. Personally, I'd probably use ext2 or ext4 depending on the file size requirements.
23:01 🔗 JAA (And other factors, obviously.)
23:01 🔗 Raccoon sure, if you absolutely don't want it to read on Windows
23:01 🔗 * JAA still hopes that Windows goes to /dev/null one day.
23:01 🔗 JAA :-)
23:01 🔗 Raccoon when i think of "archive" i also think of public libraries, and 98% of public libraries are windows-only
23:02 🔗 JAA Yes, and that's a mistake.
23:02 🔗 Raccoon it is
23:02 🔗 Raccoon but it is what it is and it be what it be
23:02 🔗 jason0597 what? how are they windows only?
23:02 🔗 jason0597 how do you make a PDF windows only?
23:03 🔗 Raccoon visit your public library
23:03 🔗 JAA All their computer systems tend to be Windows-based.
23:03 🔗 JAA There are few exceptions.
23:03 🔗 jason0597 err i don't think i can relate as a greek
23:03 🔗 jason0597 i don't even know if we have computers in the public libraries in greece
23:03 🔗 JAA lol
23:04 🔗 Raccoon side note. this is the only windows softare that formats FAT32 on large harddrives. http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm
23:04 🔗 Raccoon i don't know what *nix software formats FAT32 on large disks
23:04 🔗 JAA Any libraries that do digital archiving?
23:04 🔗 JAA To be fair, those are more open to using Linux since a lot of the tools for web archival are based on it.
23:05 🔗 JAA s/based on/built for/
23:05 🔗 Raccoon to be fair, non super-west countries (often poor countries) are very pro-Linux
23:05 🔗 Raccoon so they're ahead of the game
23:05 🔗 jason0597 yes it helps to not pay microsoft fees
23:05 🔗 JAA Yes, but they also tend to not have a lot of funds for large-scale web archival either.
23:05 🔗 jason0597 though if a country does try to get ahead of the game, bill gates will fly over there in his private jet and give them a 95% discount
23:06 🔗 jason0597 see south korea and.... belgium i think also tried?
23:06 🔗 Raccoon Turks are still using Windows XP last I heard
23:07 🔗 jason0597 everyone does it
23:07 🔗 Raccoon largely due to the language and unwillingness to switch to UTF8
23:07 🔗 jason0597 just no one admits it
23:07 🔗 JAA XP is still widely used in at least the health sector. Military probably too.
23:07 🔗 jason0597 japan is also craaaaaaaaaaazy for windows XP
23:07 🔗 JAA Anyway, this is getting into -ot territory.
23:07 🔗 Raccoon i can't do -ot :'(
23:07 🔗 Raccoon but enjoy
23:08 🔗 jason0597 ok so i'll just use exFAT
23:09 🔗 Raccoon ++
