00:27 🔗 chirvin It has come to my attention that someone on here may have an archive of SoundCloud. Me and a group of trusted people are working on archiving every single song that we can with the end goal of archiving everything because we believe every person who makes music should not have their work die out or have them forgotten and we would like access to the SoundCloud archive if anyone has it still

15:30 🔗 icedice How important is it to keep two backups vs just one backup, especially if I only use that external HDD when syncing new files onto it?
15:31 🔗 eythian can you afford to lose that data? If yes, then it's maybe enough. If no, then it's not enough.
15:32 🔗 eythian If in the middle, then you have to decide for yourself. External HDs aren't the most reliable and if you're also including versioning (i.e. it has old deleted files) then one backup is zero backups.
15:34 🔗 eythian personally, I use two: one on-site (a cheap ARM board plugged into an external drive running rsnapshot that nightly syncs from my servers), and then that backup gets synced to rsync.net for safer storage.
15:37 🔗 JAA icedice: Think about what happens if your house gets flooded or burns down.
15:38 🔗 eythian yes, all copies in one place is a bad idea.
15:39 🔗 icedice True
15:39 🔗 eythian (or a thief, or a power surge, or the marshmallow man...)
15:39 🔗 icedice It's a pain in the ass to keep offline offsite backups up to date though
15:39 🔗 eythian my setup does it automatically every night while I sleep.
15:40 🔗 icedice And there are no affordable encrypted non-US online backup services
15:42 🔗 eythian Mine's with rsync.net in Switzerland. It's not encrypted, but I wouldn't trust that to a third party - I'd run that part locally.
15:42 🔗 eythian (though, it's a US company, but the data is physically in .ch.)
15:43 🔗 martini has joined #archiveteam-ot
15:44 🔗 eythian affordable is a matter of taste. I pay US$82/year for 190GB that has its own level of snapshotting so that if someone got into my account there and deleted everything, I could still recover from the snapshots up to 7 days later.
15:44 🔗 eythian There are cheaper options, but I'm happy to pay for a quality service.
15:44 🔗 eythian If your data is important to you, then you need to weigh up the cost against what you can afford.
16:08 🔗 icedice Data hosted by US companies overseas might still be within US jurisdiction
16:09 🔗 icedice I don't remember how all of those court battles between Microsoft and the US government and Google and the US government ended, but I'm keeping my data away from there
16:10 🔗 icedice But yeah, I guess I should handle the encryption myself
16:10 🔗 icedice Jottacloud is an option then: https://www.jottacloud.com/en/
16:11 🔗 icedice They're based in Norway and only host data in countries with the same level of privacy legislation or better
16:11 🔗 icedice Their customer support is apparently pretty bad though, but it's cheap and offshore at least
16:13 🔗 ayanami_ So, I should keep an offline and online/offsite backup?
16:13 🔗 icedice There's also Tresorit, which is based in Switzerland and end-to-end encrypted, but that one is too expensive: https://tresorit.com/
16:13 🔗 ayanami_ I just have my stuff on GDrive for now, and local copies on my HDD
16:13 🔗 icedice Google Drive corrupted one of my photos
16:14 🔗 icedice Not sure I would trust it too much, especially with the content ID bs
16:14 🔗 ayanami_ Yeah, they corrupted 1-2 video files of mine, but I have them back now
16:14 🔗 ayanami_ I have some copyrighted stuff on mine and I haven't got a strike or anything AFAIK
16:15 🔗 icedice I think I deleted the original (I needed to reformat my phone and had some issues with USB transfers at that time)
16:15 🔗 icedice So that cat pic got corrupted and our cat died on December 27th
16:16 🔗 ayanami_ The video in question: http://i.imgur.com/Wey5A6o.png. I can only play it in GDrive - and when I download it, it won't open, so I assume it's corrupted
16:16 🔗 icedice Yikes

16:17 🔗 icedice Maybe try to demux and remux it and see if that fixes anything
16:17 🔗 ayanami_ ...?
16:17 🔗 ayanami_ Sorry
16:17 🔗 ayanami_ I didn't rip it or anything, I downloaded said file from MEGA a while ago
16:17 🔗 icedice If it's just the container that is currupted and the video and audio tracks are intact that should fix it
16:17 🔗 ayanami_ the original file is gone now since I wiped the HDD it was on back in December
16:17 🔗 ayanami_ how tho
16:18 🔗 icedice * corrupted

16:18 🔗 icedice ^ that might do the trick
16:18 🔗 ayanami_ alright, maybe i could do that someday

16:18 🔗 ayanami_ k
16:19 🔗 ayanami_ BTW: How many MB are subtitles normally?
16:20 🔗 ayanami_ (like in MKV video files)
16:20 🔗 icedice I'd say kb
16:20 🔗 ayanami_ Odd
16:21 🔗 ayanami_ Guess the extra 300MB or so on some of these files are probably better video/audio
16:21 🔗 icedice 189 kb for a .srt file from a feature length movie
16:21 🔗 icedice Probably multiple audio tracks
16:21 🔗 ayanami_ Odd, these files only have 1 IIRC
16:22 🔗 ayanami_ Yup, just Track 1 - English

17:40 🔗 icedice That's a European backup service
17:44 🔗 JAA The major European server providers also have offers.
17:44 🔗 JAA And if you have a large amount of data (at least several TB), renting a server is probably cheapest. For 20+ TB, Hetzner's SX server line.
17:45 🔗 JAA (You'd have to handle redundancy yourself though.)
17:46 🔗 icedice Yeah, but then you have to manage it and not screw it up

20:22 🔗 ola_norsk __(i'm not going to admit it's an usb stick i pulled out from under my scooter seat..)__
