03:41 🔗 JAA If that means that Firefox becomes more popular again and people complain about Mozilla's bullshittery, I'm all for it.

14:37 🔗 lunik1 I should start looking into setting up pi-hole
14:42 🔗 schbirid pi-hole is a glorified stupid dns based adblocker
14:42 🔗 schbirid its useful for "smart" devices where you cannot implement better blocking
14:43 🔗 schbirid it is bloody useless for modern adblocking in a browser
14:44 🔗 lunik1 sometimes I have to use chrome so it might be better than whatever crippled adblock is around after the API change
14:45 🔗 JAA Or use a browser that will still let you do proper ad blocking in the future?
14:46 🔗 lunik1 there's a couple of sites I need for my work that don't work on firefox (even if you change the UA string)
14:46 🔗 lunik1 I haven't tried opera/vivaldi so that might be a way around

17:29 🔗 t3 So I am going to purchase a Lenovo Thinkpad X280. Does anyone here own a Thinkpad?
17:30 🔗 Fusl i own a x121e
17:30 🔗 t3 My current laptop is a 2011 Apple MacBook Air 13, which is in pretty bad condition. I think it's time for an upgrade.
17:30 🔗 Fusl and a t510
17:31 🔗 t3 Fusl: What are your thoughts on the X280? Do you recommend me go for T480 or something instead?
17:32 🔗 Fusl afaict, you cant upgrade memory?
17:33 🔗 Fusl yeah, its soldered
17:33 🔗 t3 X280 has onboard soldered memory. I'm going to invest in the 16 GB model.
17:33 🔗 Fusl imho, go with something that supports upgrading up to 64gb memory
17:33 🔗 Fusl ive made the mistake and got a laptop myself that only supports 32gb
17:34 🔗 t3 Oh, to better manage VMs, right?
17:34 🔗 t3 And more Docker containers?
17:34 🔗 Fusl my vms are actually very slim
17:34 🔗 Fusl problems are chrome, telegram, keybase, atom and electron based apps
17:35 🔗 t3 Oh, right.
17:35 🔗 t3 Keybase does hoard memory, you're right.
17:35 🔗 JAA This is why I use none of those things.
17:35 🔗 erin has joined #archiveteam-ot
17:36 🔗 Fusl oh and discord
17:36 🔗 JAA The memory usage's just ridiculous.

17:38 🔗 t3 Fusl: What are your thoughts on the new Thinkpad T495 model with an AMD Ryzen mobile CPU and AMD Vega GPU?
17:38 🔗 t3 I don't think AMD has the license to support the Thunderbolt 3 spec, so I won't be able to use external GPUs.
17:39 🔗 Fusl also soldered ram and only 8gb option available?
17:39 🔗 astrid has joined #archiveteam-ot
17:39 🔗 Fusl sets mode: +o astrid
17:39 🔗 t3 You have to press 'Next' to see the upgraded models, or press 'Customize' to add it.
17:40 🔗 t3 I think I am going to try to get a used one from eBay.
17:40 🔗 MrRadar has joined #archiveteam-ot
17:41 🔗 t3 And how about the ThinkPad P series?
17:41 🔗 t3 https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/c/LAPTOPS
17:41 🔗 Igloo I have a thinkpad T480s from work
17:41 🔗 Igloo It's good enough
17:41 🔗 Igloo But then a core i7 / 64G / triple 24" desktop
17:41 🔗 Igloo which I use mostly
17:42 🔗 t3 I have the option of the P1, P52, or P72.
17:42 🔗 t3 Igloo: Does that have onboard soldered memory?
17:42 🔗 Igloo Not a scooby do.
17:42 🔗 Igloo Work paid for it, I use it.
17:42 🔗 Igloo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHBuyu_Dy3k
17:42 🔗 Igloo I'd say not.
17:43 🔗 Igloo Maybe single dimm though?
17:43 🔗 t3 I was thinking, maybe I can use a thin and light laptop and VNC to a desktop workstation. That would mean I would need a good wireless internet connection when using the laptop.
17:43 🔗 Fusl t3: in all honesty, i'm probably the worst person around to give advice on buying hardware. i just buy different brands and then go with the one that i like the most while hoarding all the other ones
17:44 🔗 Igloo I'm going to get the new macbook
17:44 🔗 t3 Igloo: It has 8 GB onboard soldered and a single DDR4 DIMM slot.
17:44 🔗 Igloo so again pretty shit
17:48 🔗 t3 I'm going to switch my daily driver operating system from macOS to Arch Linux, but Apple has some pretty steep walls making it difficult for me to escape the Apple ecosystem. I'd like to leave the 'walled-garden' sooner rather than later, so that is why I'm gravitating towards brands like Lenovo and Dell.
17:49 🔗 dhyan_nat has joined #archiveteam-ot
17:56 🔗 t3 I've heard the following: MacBooks have great trackpads and displays, but horrible keyboards. They also have weak-sauce specs and are overpriced, however it comes with the visual novelties of macOS.
17:56 🔗 t3 ThinkPads have great keyboards, decent trackpads, useful 'TrackPoint' pointing sticks, but not the greatest displays. The X1 Carbon and X1 Extreme lineup are high sought after, however battery life is a down-side and they're a bit pricy. The ThinkPad P series have mediocre displays.
17:58 🔗 t3 Dell has the XPS line with good displays, decent keyboards and trackpads. The battery life is fine. The Dell Precision lineup also have mediocre displays unless I get the more expensive upgraded models.
17:59 🔗 Igloo The pointy stick on mine
17:59 🔗 Igloo Keeps tracking off to one side even when not pushed.
17:59 🔗 Igloo But that's not unique.
18:00 🔗 t3 Additionally, DRAM prices have been pretty high the past few years.
18:00 🔗 Igloo FUCKING SSL IS DOING MY HEAD IN
18:00 🔗 Igloo ¬_¬
18:00 🔗 Igloo Just work you POS
18:03 🔗 t3 So Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung may have been colluding to increase profits.
18:03 🔗 JAA Quite happy with the my T450s except it doesn't support coreboot due to Intel Boot Guard. I think I'd look into Purism if I were to buy one nowadays.
18:04 🔗 t3 That makes me angry, since I want laptops with 256 GB of low-power DRAM.
18:04 🔗 t3 Purism?
18:04 🔗 JAA https://puri.sm/
18:04 🔗 t3 Oh I see. I will check it out.
18:11 🔗 t3 Oh man. It's a bit pricy seeing as the hardware is not up-to-date.
18:12 🔗 t3 It would be nice to have a laptop with upgradable CPUs again. And GPUs.
18:18 🔗 t3 2.054,00 EUR
18:18 🔗 t3 Whoops.

21:21 🔗 icedice Purism seems nice yeah

21:30 🔗 icedice Did you see my messages a few days ago?
21:33 🔗 godane no
21:34 🔗 icedice Ok, I'll copy pasta it
21:34 🔗 icedice The initial, less relevant stuff:
21:34 🔗 icedice Surugaya is a chain of stores selling used magazines (along with DVD, CDs, and games) in Japan. They only have small size scans of covers.
21:34 🔗 icedice There is another large chain of stores called Mandarake that also sell used magazines. Their scans are much, much better and they usually also scan the table of contents in addition to the cover + maybe some random pages: https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/
21:35 🔗 icedice The good stuff:
21:35 🔗 icedice I have a friend who knows Japanese and has an interest in Japanese gaming magazines, so I copy pasted your discussion to him
21:35 🔗 icedice He replied:
21:35 🔗 icedice I couldn't find anything, but Japanese magazine archiving seems to be a lot less common than US etc.
21:35 🔗 icedice It might be the guy scanning mags himself + supplementing his collection with what's found on English sites.
21:35 🔗 icedice It seems he's interested in digitizing and making PDFs of retro game magazines, best chance may be to try contacting him by email?
21:35 🔗 icedice probably would be worth being careful at least though
21:35 🔗 icedice as an anecdote, with some Japanese SNES satellite games...
21:35 🔗 icedice there was a similar blog which obviously had ROMs of games that were never shared
21:35 🔗 icedice contacted by US fans and at first they shared some, but then got upset and cut off all contact
21:36 🔗 icedice so now there's some iirc ~10 games, even popular ones like Kirby, which the only screenshots etc are from a blog which won't
21:36 🔗 icedice release them
21:41 🔗 godane i email that guy and got nothing back
21:44 🔗 godane also screenshots from full scans from somewhere: https://retoge-mag.hatenablog.com/entry/2019/05/28/232417
21:44 🔗 godane that one is from retromags

21:47 🔗 icedice Ok
21:47 🔗 icedice He might not even know English that well
21:48 🔗 icedice Then there's the whole demographic of people who don't want to respond to Internet strangers contacting them in foreign languages
21:48 🔗 icedice If you want to track down and import the original magazine I might be able to help you with that though
21:49 🔗 icedice I have some experience in that area
21:49 🔗 godane i'm trying find the pdfs online vs scanning them myself
21:49 🔗 icedice How many magazines are you looking for?
21:51 🔗 godane i'm looking for any magazines of POPCOM, Login, etc
21:51 🔗 godane basicly any 1980s or 1990s computer magazines from japan
21:58 🔗 godane icedice: good news is someone is doing this magazine : https://archive.org/details/@miralita
