[16:12] icedice, the fragmentation probably went up because you deleted non-fragmented files. [16:18] Imagine using a file system that has fragmentation issues... *laughs in ext4* [16:27] fragmentation is inevitable when free space is low or when you repeatedly append to files over time [16:28] NTFS doesn't have some great issue with it [16:37] If any chunk of that data is static read-only media, your best plan is to buy a 4TB platter drive and only copy completed permanent read-only media to that drive. Never deleting or appending. I have a FS here that has been at 95+ % for years, often 99+ % even, with constant writes and appends, yet only 1.3 % of the data is non-contiguous. But obviously that strongly depends on how you use the FS exactly. [16:40] themadpr0: that's how we getcha! I'm not sure defragmentation would even work. I guess it wouldn't strain the SSD that much if it's only one time though. I've run TRIM and it didn't do anything. [17:01] "Storage Optimizer will defrag an SSD once a month if volume snapshots are enabled." [17:01] Source: https://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheRealAndCompleteStoryDoesWindowsDefragmentYourSSD.aspx [17:05] I've had my SSD pretty filled up. Would be a shame if this is not fixable. CrystalDiskInfo and chkdsk says that the SSD is healthy, so that's something, at least. [17:07] defrag is also pretty relative in terms of unused space optimization. I do wish that SSD had the option to re-shuffle logical fragmentation into logical sequential order so the filesystem and os don't have to think so hard about jumping from cluster to cluster [17:08] from a performance stand point, logical fragmentation is probably a lot more burdensome than physical fragmentation in a good SSD [17:10] i guess that statement is undervalued, since basically raid their chip array [17:10] *since SSDs [17:29] icedice: I don't know why you're so scared of your hardware [17:30] if it's under warranty and under the warrantied TBW you can get it replaced [17:31] also `defrag` sometimes wants to do way too many passes, you probably only need 1 or 2, so you can ctrl-c it at some point [17:33] ivan_: Everything I touch breaks. That's why. [17:34] learn Bayes, do science, investigate causal factors that aren't about you [17:39] I should probably register the warranty on that SSD [17:40] I still got warranty from the retailer though, which is the first place to go if it fails [17:41] if you paid extra for some warranty at retail those are just places that take your money to send the product to the OEM for warranty service [17:44] No, there's usually warranty included for free from the place I bought it from iirc [17:46] Or that's probably just manufacturer's warranty [17:51] ivan_: do you see 'bl' at the top of this page and source? http://otrrlibrary.org/ [18:07] JAA: offtopic question. if i bought a 4TB usb harddrive to pass around in circles with other archivists, what are your predicted metrics for interest and success?
