11:12 🔗 icedice Two days ago:
11:12 🔗 icedice Volume size = 930,97 GB
11:12 🔗 icedice Free space = 392,93 GB
11:12 🔗 icedice Total fragmented space = 22%
11:12 🔗 icedice Largest free space size = 5,40 GB
11:12 🔗 icedice Today:
11:13 🔗 icedice Volume size = 930,97 GB
11:13 🔗 icedice Free space = 363,84 GB
11:13 🔗 icedice Total fragmented space = 27%
11:13 🔗 icedice Largest free space size = 3,58 GB
11:13 🔗 icedice Is it just going to keep fragmenting even though I cleared up all of that space?
11:13 🔗 icedice I really need to figure out how to run Storage Optimizer manually
11:14 🔗 icedice Not sure I can wait for its automatic run which will happen sometime within the next 28 days

16:05 🔗 ivan_ hmm try defrag /A /V C:
16:05 🔗 ivan_ or just defrag it with defrag /U /V C:
16:06 🔗 yano has joined #archiveteam-ot
16:06 🔗 ivan_ Windows should TRIM the free space on your SSDs by default, what does Storage Optimizer do?
16:12 🔗 ScruffyB icedice, the fragmentation probably went up because you deleted non-fragmented files.
16:18 🔗 JAA Imagine using a file system that has fragmentation issues... *laughs in ext4*
16:27 🔗 ivan_ fragmentation is inevitable when free space is low or when you repeatedly append to files over time
16:28 🔗 ivan_ NTFS doesn't have some great issue with it
16:37 🔗 Raccoon If any chunk of that data is static read-only media, your best plan is to buy a 4TB platter drive and only copy completed permanent read-only media to that drive. Never deleting or appending.

16:39 🔗 themadpr0 has joined #archiveteam-ot
16:39 🔗 Raccoon and probably format it as exFAT for portability so you don't have to deal with ACL/ADS nonsense
16:39 🔗 themadpr0 hey hey hey
16:39 🔗 themadpr0 Someone decided to remove all chat permissions from the Discord server in order to lure us to IRC
16:39 🔗 themadpr0 I've been lured to IRC
16:39 🔗 JAA ivan_: True, but ext4 seems to do a much better job at handling that. I have a FS here that has been at 95+ % for years, often 99+ % even, with constant writes and appends, yet only 1.3 % of the data is non-contiguous. But obviously that strongly depends on how you use the FS exactly.
16:40 🔗 Raccoon themadpr0: that's how we getcha!
16:40 🔗 JAA Discord is shit, IRC is the shit! :-)
16:43 🔗 Raccoon speaking of drives, I need another 2 or 3. :( media disks at a combined 97% capacity
16:43 🔗 Raccoon after pruning
16:44 🔗 themadpr0 the graph in the lower left corner of the warrior is showing all 0's
16:44 🔗 themadpr0 am I doing it right?
16:46 🔗 Fusl yeah, its been broken for a while

16:54 🔗 Raccoon does anyone else see 'bl' at the top of this page and source? http://otrrlibrary.org/
16:55 🔗 themadpr0 @Fusl well thanks

17:00 🔗 icedice ivan_: It's an SSD. I'm not sure defragmentation would even work. I guess it wouldn't strain the SSD that much if it's only one time though. I've run TRIM and it didn't do anything.
17:01 🔗 icedice "Storage Optimizer will defrag an SSD once a month if volume snapshots are enabled."
17:01 🔗 icedice Source: https://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheRealAndCompleteStoryDoesWindowsDefragmentYourSSD.aspx
17:05 🔗 icedice I've had my SSD pretty filled up. Would be a shame if this is not fixable. CrystalDiskInfo and chkdsk says that the SSD is healthy, so that's something, at least.
17:07 🔗 Raccoon defrag is also pretty relative in terms of unused space optimization. I do wish that SSD had the option to re-shuffle logical fragmentation into logical sequential order so the filesystem and os don't have to think so hard about jumping from cluster to cluster
17:08 🔗 Raccoon from a performance stand point, logical fragmentation is probably a lot more burdensome than physical fragmentation in a good SSD
17:10 🔗 Raccoon i guess that statement is undervalued, since basically raid their chip array
17:10 🔗 Raccoon *since SSDs
17:29 🔗 ivan_ icedice: I don't know why you're so scared of your hardware
17:30 🔗 ivan_ if it's under warranty and under the warrantied TBW you can get it replaced
17:31 🔗 ivan_ also `defrag` sometimes wants to do way too many passes, you probably only need 1 or 2, so you can ctrl-c it at some point
17:33 🔗 icedice ivan_: Everything I touch breaks. That's why.
17:34 🔗 ivan_ learn Bayes, do science, investigate causal factors that aren't about you
17:39 🔗 icedice I should probably register the warranty on that SSD
17:40 🔗 icedice I still got warranty from the retailer though, which is the first place to go if it fails
17:41 🔗 ivan_ if you paid extra for some warranty at retail those are just places that take your money to send the product to the OEM for warranty service
17:44 🔗 icedice No, there's usually warranty included for free from the place I bought it from iirc
17:46 🔗 icedice Or that's probably just manufacturer's warranty
17:51 🔗 Raccoon ivan_: do you see 'bl' at the top of this page and source? http://otrrlibrary.org/
18:07 🔗 Raccoon JAA: offtopic question. if i bought a 4TB usb harddrive to pass around in circles with other archivists, what are your predicted metrics for interest and success?
18:08 🔗 JAA Not the slightest idea.
18:09 🔗 Raccoon the operators of the aformentioned website said they would dump me an archive if I sent them a drive. Figure it could make some circles around
18:09 🔗 Raccoon estimates aroud 2 to 3 gigs depending on what extras are recovered from the recently deceased founder's drives too
18:09 🔗 Raccoon 2 to 3 tbs
18:10 🔗 kiska None, as I would *not* like to pay shipping from Syd to wherever
18:10 🔗 markedL well, shipping within the US for example is affordable but international, yeah
18:11 🔗 markedL yeah, no
18:11 🔗 Raccoon i don't remember shipping to Melburne being all that terribad
18:12 🔗 JAA I know that hard drives have been shipped to IA before.
18:12 🔗 kiska From Syd to US: https://server8.kiska.pw/uploads/263b4d19ac676d01/image.png
18:12 🔗 kiska Yeah... no thanks
18:13 🔗 markedL the super cheap shipping is less than 13oz, but also less than 1pound. should be able to get some flash at that density
18:13 🔗 JAA 2-3 months between major metro areas. lol
18:13 🔗 kiska Well... it is economy sea :D
18:14 🔗 JAA Yeah, they probably put it in a random container and then it'll be shipped around until the container happens to be in the destination city?
18:14 🔗 kiska Yep :D
18:15 🔗 Raccoon but man, some of your restrictions and prohibitions are insane. can't send paper money, or anything of value, even a stamp collection
18:16 🔗 Raccoon Seditious literature, and anything made with prison labor (ie, Victoria Secret)
18:23 🔗 DogsRNice has joined #archiveteam-ot
18:30 🔗 Raccoon so I just metered the price, USPS intl package. $6 to $8, otherwise $14 depending on method. Crazy it's $40+ the other way.
18:35 🔗 kiska Yeah the general rule is, if you send something to Australia, don't expect it back :D
18:35 🔗 Raccoon we also have something called 'media mail' and one of the cheap options says "documents only as of 2018", which allows for CDs and disks. I imagine harddrives count.
18:36 🔗 Raccoon I can't wait for 10 TB micro-SD cards.
18:37 🔗 Raccoon ship it via weather balloon
