given #aohell seems dead, |
00:48
π
|
raylee |
i'll just say it here |
00:48
π
|
raylee |
I just found startools aol / master aol / the debugging tools for AOL |
00:48
π
|
raylee |
http://www.aciddr0p.net/aolunorgd/ |
00:48
π
|
raylee |
maol*.zip |
00:55
π
|
raylee |
the master.tol / master.aol file goes into the tools dir.. then dbinvokes work PERFECTLY... |
01:24
π
|
the_freak |
twitch project isnt gonna make it |
01:24
π
|
the_freak |
someone needs to reset the pending tasks |
01:32
π
|
chfoo |
aol is still online? |
01:37
π
|
raylee |
yes. i found that out today, and then found the archiveteam wiki page about it |
01:40
π
|
chfoo |
raylee: is it ok if i copy and paste what you just said into the wiki? |
01:40
π
|
chfoo |
i mean the debugging tools |
01:43
π
|
chfoo |
too late, i added it to the wiki already |
01:47
π
|
raylee |
it's fine |
01:47
π
|
raylee |
I would have added it myself |
01:47
π
|
raylee |
but I cba to register |
01:49
π
|
raylee |
note to self, mirror everything on aciddr0p.net, when time permits |
01:51
π
|
raylee |
you know what would be really nice |
01:51
π
|
raylee |
is if aol doesn't freeze up every 5 seconds when trying to get something that obviously causes an error |
01:51
π
|
raylee |
and this happens on every version. |
01:53
π
|
DFJustin |
I added aciddr0p to the archivebot queue |
01:53
π
|
raylee |
great |
01:54
π
|
DFJustin |
it would be really nice if someone could mirror the aol file areas, I was in #aohell for a while but I just don't have time to take on another archiving project |
02:09
π
|
dashcloud |
raylee: is there one for beyond aol 4/5? |
02:11
π
|
dashcloud |
raylee: I'd love to work on the aol project again, but I ran into two big problems- discovering all the content (which involves checking hundreds or thousands of links), and then actually downloading all the content- if you've got a solution or part of a solution to either one, please share |
02:12
π
|
raylee |
dashcloud, yeah, there's ones up to aol 8 |
02:12
π
|
raylee |
however I don't think the aol 8 one works, so the highest working one is aol 7 |
02:14
π
|
dashcloud |
if you've read the wiki, you've seen that we've only done AOL through Wine- which works reasonably well for version 4 at least |
02:15
π
|
raylee |
yeah, I have a bunch of versions from 2.5 installed on my windows XP vm |
02:15
π
|
raylee |
people still use the fucking chatrooms there |
02:16
π
|
raylee |
albeit only 20 or so |
02:16
π
|
chfoo |
writing an aol client can't be that hard, can it? |
02:17
π
|
raylee |
well, it does use a custom protocol.. parts have been figured out though it seems |
02:18
π
|
dashcloud |
if you could write a custom form to grab everything from AOL, that's all you need- there's enough tools and basic documentation to build it client-side and then run it, and use AOL to do the work for you |
02:19
π
|
raylee |
true |
02:20
π
|
dashcloud |
unfortunately, you need to write in a scripting language you've never used before and will never use again, and there's really no one to ask when you have a question- only Google and staring at a debugger |
02:21
π
|
dashcloud |
not insurmountable by any means |
02:21
π
|
raylee |
^ |
02:21
π
|
raylee |
at least we *have* the proper debuggers now |
02:21
π
|
dashcloud |
I've got probably all the tools you need, and hopefully I've either got a copy or archived enough documentation to help someone out |
02:22
π
|
dashcloud |
you'll use AOL's debugger- the Star tool lets you access that |
02:22
π
|
raylee |
yeah |
02:22
π
|
dashcloud |
you can break apart and step through the forms |
02:22
π
|
dashcloud |
(which is what AOL is made of) |
02:23
π
|
dashcloud |
wireshark can understand part of AOL packet captures |
02:23
π
|
raylee |
yeah |
02:23
π
|
raylee |
I know |
02:24
π
|
chfoo |
so if i understand correctly, it's not a network protocol that needs a client, it's a querying protocol? |
02:25
π
|
raylee |
heh |
02:28
π
|
raylee |
I love that there are still people in AOL chat rooms |
02:28
π
|
dashcloud |
I'm not sure- what would you need to know? |
02:32
π
|
chfoo |
i guess i really don't know what aol is. the first time i heard of aol was when i was 9 and i thought it was just dial up service and a search engine. |
02:33
π
|
dashcloud |
it is- but later they added the ability to reach it through tcp/ip (a.k.a bring your own internet)- you'd connect otherwise, and then hook into AOL's content once you were online |
02:35
π
|
dashcloud |
not sure how useful this document is for you, but it covers the aol protocol about as well as anything that's available: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~ricardo/misc/docs/theaolprotocol.txt |
02:37
π
|
raylee |
dashcloud: actually, there's tcp/ip support in aol 2.5 |
02:37
π
|
raylee |
lol |
02:37
π
|
raylee |
so, pretty early on |
02:50
π
|
chfoo |
is the forms concept similar to x11's client-server concept? |
02:51
π
|
dashcloud |
let me get you one |
02:59
π
|
dashcloud |
here's a super-basic aol form: http://pastebin.com/gSizezVH |

here's two links that go over basic FDO forms: https://web.archive.org/web/20130525202943/http://www.mattmazur.com/archive/aol-files/fdo91/tutorial_lesson02.html https://web.archive.org/web/20130525192737/http://www.mattmazur.com/archive/aol-files/fdo91/tutorial_lesson03.html |

I've got a document called waol.doc that may be of use: https://web.archive.org/web/20130130023852/http://koin.org/files/aol.aim/aol/fdo/manuals/WAOL.doc it's described in the doc as: Rough Draft of WAOL Client Code Outline & Misc. Info. |

i think i understand it a bit better now |

"people use the aol chatrooms" Γ’ΒΒΓΒ that's because AIM was supported for way longer and people still use it |

does the trackers need clearing? nothing seems to be happening & im getting no jobs |
15:20
π

Rotab |
nvm :) |
15:25
π
|
midas |
chfoo: could it be related to more and more sites linking to the tracker? |
15:28
π
|
chfoo |
midas: i don't think so. i think once redis runs out of memory and gets killed, the scripts that drain out the logs also die. once redis recovers, items keep flooding back in and then redis runs out of memory again |

Hi - what's the best way to preserve a website of a company that got bought recently and may thus vanish from the web in its current form? |
21:32
π

... and make that backup available publicly, preferably on archive.org |
