00:00 πŸ”— benbradle WHAT FORSOOTH, PRITHEE TELL ME THE SECRET WORD
00:00 πŸ”— omf_ THY SECRET WORD IS 'yahoosucks'
00:01 πŸ”— omf_ GO FORTH AND ADD KNOWLEDGE TO THE COLLECTIVE :)
00:01 πŸ”— benbradle LOL. TY, omf_!
13:30 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ I just cleaned out the family closet full of old cd- and dvd-roms, and now I have this pile of old shareware-bundles and old games going back to at least 1999
13:31 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ is there any preferred format to stopre disc images? what imaging format has #archiveteam´s seal of approval?
13:39 πŸ”— omf_ iso
13:40 πŸ”— omf_ all the cd and dvd images I do are in .iso
13:41 πŸ”— omf_ that covers the ISO 9660 and UDF standards
13:48 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ ah thanks, also, I´m using Windows (please don´t kill me, I´m just lazy) so is there any problem with using ImgBurn to image disks, are there settings I should be wary of?
13:50 πŸ”— omf_ imgburn can make iso files
13:50 πŸ”— omf_ example: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11003/how-to-create-a-windows-iso-from-a-disc-using-imgburn/
13:51 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ I know, I just mean: does it mangle something (data or metadata) I might not be aware of?
13:51 πŸ”— omf_ nothing I know of. Anyone else know?
13:52 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ y´know, quirks to be wary of
13:52 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ ah
13:53 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ hey, it even has an option to generate .md5-files *enables*
13:53 πŸ”— Smiley utf stuff is the only thing I know about keeping an eye on
13:54 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ udf?
13:55 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ or utf, as in the encoding?
13:55 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ utf-8*
13:56 πŸ”— Smiley yah
13:56 πŸ”— Smiley screwed up names and the like
13:57 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ ah
13:57 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ yeah, figures
14:07 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ hmm
14:07 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ imgburn throws an error
14:08 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ or more like, a warning and offer to correct asetting
14:09 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ http://i.imgur.com/17F8WPI.png
14:12 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-ROM#CD-ROM_format hmm
14:13 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ looks like mode 1 is preferable, with the error detection and correction and stuff
14:15 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ anyway, I´ll be afk for a bit
14:15 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ eat breakfast and stuff, although it´s 4pm over here
14:59 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-ROM#Disc_images given this information, from a archival standpoint I think it´s better to use ccd/img, cue/bin or mds/mdf
15:01 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ ISO only stores the data parts of a cd-sector, while those other formatgs also store the error checking/correction information etc.
15:01 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ formats*
15:11 πŸ”— dashcloud planning to upload to IA then?
15:22 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ dashcloud: if I find out how to, sure
15:23 πŸ”— dashcloud it's not that hard- I've recently started doing it myself
15:23 πŸ”— dashcloud I just use the IA web uploader
15:23 πŸ”— dashcloud if you're doing a disc at a time, it's fine
15:24 πŸ”— dashcloud if you've got hundreds of discs, you may want to investigate a different method
15:24 πŸ”— dashcloud planning to upload cover art as well?
15:27 πŸ”— dashcloud if so, plan your names accordingly- the first image alphabetically or numerically is treated as the cover image, even if it actually isn't
15:32 πŸ”— SketchCow It's best to upload cue/bin and ccd/img and also an ido.
15:32 πŸ”— SketchCow iso.
15:32 πŸ”— SketchCow If needed, I can write something that pulls down your ccd/img and makes the iso.
15:40 πŸ”— dashcloud so, upload a cue/bin file and a iso together?
15:40 πŸ”— SketchCow I walked 13 miles yesterday. Going to see what happens today.
15:40 πŸ”— SketchCow Yes, or, like I said, I can write something to do that work, which is faster if you're doing hundreds.
15:43 πŸ”— dashcloud so, what software on Linux lets you create cue/bin files?
15:44 πŸ”— Smiley cdrdao
15:45 πŸ”— Smiley http://miketeo.net/wp/index.php/2008/05/10/creating-bincue-files-on-linux.html
15:45 πŸ”— Smiley Which basically is the libs for what most writers use anyway afaik
15:47 πŸ”— dashcloud okay- thanks!
17:24 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ dashcloud: thanks for the heads up about the cover images, will remember thjat for when I decide to upload covers
17:24 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ that*
17:35 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ Also, does someone in here have experience with buffing scratches from optical media, some of my discs are´nt reading out properly anymore :/
17:36 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ aren´t*
17:36 πŸ”— dashcloud glad I could help
18:06 πŸ”— antomatic I could never really get anywhere with buffing discs but I did find that tricky discs would sometimes read in some drives and not others - so having a selection of different drives (including different types - e.g. CD-only, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray) was helpful in 'jigsawing' a complete image together.
18:06 πŸ”— xmc Muad-Dib_: cdparanoia doesn't cut the mustard anymore?
18:38 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ xmc, using windows, sadly
18:38 πŸ”— Jonimus Muad-Dib_: try EAC
18:39 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ It´s a data cd
18:39 πŸ”— Jonimus ahh, then not sure
18:41 πŸ”— godane looks like archive.org doesn't like my dates
18:41 πŸ”— godane for my g4video-web collection
18:41 πŸ”— Smiley D:
18:42 πŸ”— godane the older method that had 0 infront of single digits i think is the way the search and publish by date works
18:45 πŸ”— Smiley http://youtu.be/aJkI6xOPspM
18:45 πŸ”— Smiley awk '{ for (i=1; i<=NF; i++) $i=sprintf("%02d", $i); print; }
18:45 πŸ”— Smiley there you go
18:45 πŸ”— Smiley try that, let me know how you get on (just grabbed from google)
18:48 πŸ”— godane Smiley: That only works for the first number
18:50 πŸ”— Smiley hmm
18:50 πŸ”— Smiley i<=4
18:51 πŸ”— godane still not working
18:51 πŸ”— godane 04 00 00 00
18:52 πŸ”— Smiley gah
19:38 πŸ”— DFJustin Muad-Dib_: that yoda message means the disc is not compatible with ISO format, better to do a bin/cue rip that documents the original disc properly rather than force it into ISO
19:39 πŸ”— DFJustin I use imgburn for my shareware CDs, if you have read errors then there is a program called ddrescue that's useful but it's not straightforward to get on windows I don't think
19:40 πŸ”— dashcloud Muad-Dib_: isopuzzle might work if you're on windows
19:43 πŸ”— Muad-Dib_ thanks, I´ll take a look at isopuzzle
19:54 πŸ”— Aranje Is there an already-standing process for photo-scanning books? Or a way to automate it if you're DIY'ing?
19:54 πŸ”— winr4r Aranje: you probably want to ask mistym, who does that
19:54 πŸ”— Aranje winr4r:) thanks :)
20:11 πŸ”— Ravenloft Aranje like http://www.diybookscanner.org/ ?
20:11 πŸ”— Ravenloft they probably got the info you want on the forums
20:53 πŸ”— Aranje kk :)
21:38 πŸ”— ivan` archiving idea: monitor .com/.org/.net for expirations, if domain actually expires, use the old IP to scrape the site
21:44 πŸ”— ersi Indeed, been on the wishlist for long
21:44 πŸ”— ersi and it's a great idea
23:12 πŸ”— wp494 If you have coding experience and want to help out with grabbing puush, head here! https://github.com/ArchiveTeam/puush-grab
23:12 πŸ”— wp494 Your attention please,
23:12 πŸ”— wp494 Also join the #pushharder channel for more details. We only have half a month to go before they start expiring images.
23:12 πŸ”— wp494 Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
