SketchCowHello,
Freesound.org hosts a large archive of audio samples released under
Creative Commons licenses, but they only allow logged in users to
download them.
Aside from restricting access to those free files, if they ever go down,
all their samples (248847 under CC BY and CC0 licenses, 12587 under CC
noncommercial licenses) will be lost forever.
So what I'm asking is to archive Freesound.org, so that this immensely
useful resource will be available to everyone forever. To make things
easier, you could use their API:
https://freesound.org/help/developers/
I'm willing to help writing a script to save all the necessary info
(like copyright, license, description, tags, collections) as well as
help in any other way, please let me know!
Anyone want in
[08:52]
baiwhat sort of help are you looking for? I might be interested, I'm always looking for sound effects [08:54]

***Boppen has joined #archiveteam [09:41]
overdriv3hi folks, I came here in regards to Freesound.org [09:41]
arkiverHi overdriv3 [09:45]
overdriv3hi arkiver! [09:45]
have any of you by any chance discussed my proposal? In short, Freesound.org is a site distributing audio samples under Creative Commons licenses (which allow redistribution) [09:50]
arkiverSound good
Let's get it saved
[09:50]
overdriv3but they restrict downloads to logged in users, and if they go down, one of the largest collections of free audio files is lost forever
they have an API so it might be good to use that to rip their site, but you need to apply for a developer key
https://freesound.org/help/developers/
their site is free software (GNU AGPL) by the way -> https://github.com/MTG/freesound
[09:50]
arkiverYeah, SketchCow gave it to us [09:52]
HCrossShall we get a channel sorted? [09:52]
arkiverI think we can get an API key, but it'll be blocked very fast [09:53]
overdriv3I spoke with the lead developer
he said he'd be willing to give a key at first, but then when I asked him again he didn't answer me
[09:53]
***Burak has quit IRC (Quit: Page closed) [09:54]
overdriv3they are not bad people, they are actually aligned with free software and culture
and they don't do it for money, but to gather audio files for their research projects
still, there might be some bandwidth costs because they have a pretty big archive
I don't have an estimate but it's probably less than 15TB
[09:54]
arkiverSo [09:55]
overdriv3they have 299609 samples [09:55]
arkiverSketchCow: do you think we should grab this as WARCs and get it in the Wayback Machine? [09:56]
overdriv3but some of them are uncompressed, and over 50MB [09:56]
arkiver(I'd like to do WARCs)
Or upload as Audio files to IA
[09:56]
overdriv3I say upload audio files to IA
it's separate from the site after all
[09:56]
arkiverWe can do both [09:56]
overdriv3cool
I'm willing to help with all the scripting and the sorting
[09:56]
arkiverSketchCow: if we do this as WARCs do the Wayback Machine, visitors from the pages in the Wayback Machine will see the logged in pages
overdriv3: that's ok
Do they have any download limits?
[09:57]
overdriv3I don't think so
I'll check, please stand by
nope, nothing I could find
and besides, as I said, the lead dev was open to the idea of someone downloading the data and uploading it somewhere else (besides, the Creative Commons license explicitly allows it)
[09:58]

arkiverWhy did he go away :/
Anyway, I found an easy way to discover all songs outside of the API
Will be testing with an account now and then we're probably going to grab as WARCs if SketchCow agrees
[10:03]
PurpleSymMailing them a few drives is not an option? [10:06]
arkiverI'd like to have the original headers saved too so we can get this as a site in the Wayback Machine [10:06]
***overdriv3 has joined #archiveteam [10:07]
overdriv3sorry people, I crashed [10:07]
arkiverI think web content should be saved into WARCs always [10:07]
overdriv3what have I missed? [10:07]
arkiverNormal files from people that aren't on the web should be saved on drives
<arkiver>Anyway, I found an easy way to discover all songs outside of the API
<arkiver>Will be testing with an account now and then we're probably going to grab as WARCs if SketchCow agrees
overdriv3 ^
[10:08]
overdriv3thanks [10:08]
arkiverand
<PurpleSym>Mailing them a few drives is not an option?
<arkiver>I'd like to have the original headers saved too so we can get this as a site in the Wayback Machine
And then you came back
(me talking about WARCs)
Anyway, sites looks easy, will test with an acount today and we'll have a grab running soon
[10:08]
overdriv3Since it's very important to keep licensing info even when files are distributed without the website, I originally thought about creating a YAML file for each audio file containing copyright info
or another format, but YAML is human-readable and easy to generate
[10:09]
arkiverYou know what WARCs are? [10:09]
overdriv3do you have a link?
it's an archive format, right?
[10:10]
arkiverhttp://archiveteam.org/index.php?title=The_WARC_Ecosystem [10:10]
overdriv3I know that wget supports it [10:10]
PurpleSymI’d do one IA item per Freesound item. [10:10]
overdriv3thanks arkiver [10:11]
PurpleSymThat should work nicely with IA’s own search engine. [10:11]
arkiverWe can extract the sounds from the Wayback Machine when they're in to upload them individually
Or have a second target and also have the warriors upload an audio copy to IA
[10:11]
overdriv3PurpleSym: that's a good idea, and keep in mind Freesound already has tags and those could be ported to IA
I mean, without proper indexing it's very hard to find a sound
[10:12]
PurpleSymWARCs are not that useful in this case imo. Especially because search won’t work there. [10:12]
arkiverWe'll do both PurpleSym
That ok?
[10:13]
overdriv3arkiver do you mean both WARCs and uploading audio files on Archive.org? [10:13]
arkiverYes [10:13]
overdriv3cool! [10:13]
PurpleSymSure. [10:14]
arkiverOk, awesome [10:14]
overdriv3how are you going to automate the porting of Freesound's licensing and author info (and tags, eventually) to IA? [10:15]
arkiverWell, extract it from the page
Maybe upoad it as some type of file together with the audio file to the target for IA audio item upload
[10:15]
overdriv3does IA have an API for uploaders? [10:15]
Smileys3 [10:16]
arkiverYes [10:16]
overdriv3arkiver: I proposed YAML, would that be OK?
even JSON or XML
[10:16]
arkiverWell, IA supports tags and other etadata, so might be better to not add it to the IA item in some file but add it to the IA item as actual metadata [10:16]
overdriv3yes, so that it can be indexed via IA's search [10:17]
arkiveryes [10:17]
overdriv3but let's say I want to mirror IA's data via torrent, can I distribute the metadata as well as the files? [10:17]
arkiveryeah, IA allows to download metadata [10:17]
overdriv3cool!
so we're pretty much set
[10:18]
arkiverYes
I'll be off now or some time, if you stay online we'l keep you informed

SketchCowQUICK INTERRUPTION
All you kids get a voice
I now have three collections on IA dedicated to CD-ROMs as a concept
I want to collapse them into 1.
So:
- /details/cd-roms
- /details/cdbbsarchive
- /details/cdromsoftware
Which wins
I'll check when I get up tomorrow
[10:21]
HCrosscd-roms is easier to remember [10:22]
SmileySketchCow: cd-roms or cdromsoftware.
Personally I prefer the first one
[10:23]
PurpleSymhttps://strawpoll.me/6998118 ? [10:23]
SmileyBut I'm a brit so... [10:23]
dxrtyeah I like cd-roms [10:25]
DFJustinI was organizing them so that cdbbsarchive is shareware stuff, coverdiscs is cover discs, and cdromsoftware is anything else
dunno what's in cd-roms
nothing yet it seems
so I would say put cdbbsarchive and coverdiscs as sub-collections of cdromsoftware and have that be the top level umbrella
or name it cdroms if you like, having a hyphen is annoying

johtso: generally, make an ISO of the disc(s), and a lossless scan of the CD itself, and the case/sleeve it came in (front and back of that)- I use PNG, but others prefer TIFF; make sure the DPI is at least 300.

dashcloudgenerally your software will tell you if there's a problem
if your CD says it includes audio or is an Enhanced CD, you need to do things differently, but that's uncommon at best
also, if you are going to upload to IA, check that the item isn't already uploaded there- tons and tons of stuff is already there (it's not the worst thing to have duplicates)

MrRadarI'm prepareing to bulk-upload those Paramount films I downloaded. What collection should I put them under? (ping: Smiley, HCross) [19:55]
DFJustincommunity video is the only one you would have access to [19:56]
HCrossopensource_movies [19:56]
DFJustin^
also yeah making a push for driver cds would be great, someone gave me an old laptop and they seem to have saved every cd that came with it except the drivers, and hp.com has helpfully taken down anything older than 10 years
[19:56]

MrRadarI've found one of these films is actually in the public domain. What field should I use with the Python IA uploader to set the license? [20:25]
Nemo_bisMrRadar: public domain in which countries? [20:36]
MrRadarUSA [20:37]
Nemo_bisbefore 1923 or what [20:37]
MrRadarThis film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strange_Love_of_Martha_Ivers
Wikipedia says they failed to renew the copyright in the 1970s
[20:37]
Nemo_bisthat's quite a rare case :o
anyway, use licenseurl = https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/
[20:38]
MrRadarThanks [20:39]
SketchCowI've discovered someone uploaded a pile of AtomicGamer. [20:46]
arkiverSketchCow: what script do you use for uploading to the FTP collection? We currently don't use FOS for FTP, but I think we can reuse the script [20:48]
***MMovie has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [20:48]
arkiverchfoo: SketchCow: can you please create a target for livejournal?
And SketchCow, do you agree with grabbing freesound.org as WARCs into the Wayback Machine?
[20:48]
SketchCowI do
There's an argument to porting it to a collection, but it's better to wayback first
[20:49]
***MMovie has joined #archiveteam [20:50]
arkiverWell, we have to login to get the best quality of the audiofiles, which means the Wayback Machine will get a logged in version [20:50]
SketchCowOh, this IS one of our guys.
Who in our group was quaddicted?
[20:50]
arkiverNo idea. Is it WARCs? [20:50]
SketchCowIt was NOT.
"Sadly"
For various values of sadly.
I mean, it's 2,366 items, many of them gigabytes
https://archive.org/details/atomicgamer The fun has begun.
I just happened to find this while looking for other stuff.
[20:52]
zino_arkiver: FYI I just made the GameTrailers module on eldrimner read-only. [20:57]
arkiverOk [20:57]
SketchCowSo, with the move of the AtomicGamer collection into its own set, the opensource collection (which is supposed to be for free books) only has 50 misclassified software items, not 2480 [21:04]
arkiverWe got access to Google Code!!! [21:05]
***MMovie has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [21:05]

i meant to request a collection for atomicgamer, didnt get around to it. sorry
thanks!
[23:19]
SketchCowNo problem./
Should have been WARCs.
But the stuff's safe, that's what matters.
You should "get around" to making an index object.
