bennett_no I know that. There’s a couple reasons I’m not ready for it to be up that don’t really have to do with the legal aspect [22:20]

bennett_it’s a creative game design project which is more important of an aspect in my eyes than the historical aspect (which is also important)
naturally when you work hard on a creative project you don’t want to push it out by accident before you’re done with it. It has a couple of really egregious problems right now which we want to fix… we got slowed down by changes made simultaneously by Apple and MAMEdev
but we will get there
if it’s on IA it looks like I’m making an official release… then it starts to reflect on me as a designer (and on AP as a programmer) if there are major flaws
but it would also be pretty easy to make some small edits to make legal strikes less likely (mainly, by removing Nintendo roms from it)
so… I will get there, but not today or tomorrow

bennett_i don’t mind if a few diehard enthusiasts have leaked copies, I care about what it means to have it up as a public post
leaked copies of Nidhogg and JS Joust were passed around for 3 years before it got released, it was nice
i imagine this distinction sounds pretty dumb if you are not a game designer but it is important to me

What matters is that it's in the hands of people who could continue the one of a kind effort now that they're inspired to.
And the program is not just in the hands of rarified few, because I find those few tend not to have any initative.

bennett_well there is an ethical dimension to this (being: artists should get to decide how or at least when their work gets released)
but i’m not really talking about that
i’m talking about the aesthetic dimension where I want to be able to stand behind my work
and not look like a total hack
i’m definitely fine with it if people want to modify it and extend it and remix it, whatever… but that will not be Multibowl

there are some really great Soviet LCD games… I hope they manage to emulate those eventually
