WhoWhatWhen
SketchCowBack from insanity
OK, going to start figuring out the deal-i-o with the arcade games
Which are blocked by The Law and which I gave up on because fuck it it crashed

SketchCowSo, there are 407 arcade items that are dark. [01:19]
..... (idle for 24mn)
DFJustinthe error occurs with -romident so it's almost certainly to do with the chd code [01:43]
.... (idle for 18mn)
SketchCowOK, going through the 407 items now
The VAST Majority are rightsholders, of course.

bai:D
so....is archive.org intentionally throttling larger downloads to around 1 MB/s?
[07:26]
SketchCowSo, next is for me to download all the CHDs (that's happening)
And then shove them in in a way with a script that does maximum metadata.
The answer is no, I'll talk to Jonah tomorrow.
[07:30]
baiseems I get good speeds up front, but they very quickly taper off to 1 MB/s, no matter which connection I try from, including from aws [07:30]
anyway, cool stuff [07:37]
SketchCowI just played Wipeout in a Browser [07:43]
...... (idle for 25mn)
baiwhew, me too....can't say I did very well, but it worked [08:08]

DFJustinSketchCow: so this fixed the issue I was getting with mac in jsmame too, that may be worth looking at because mame can do a system 7 machine with colour for example [14:37]
db48xglowing-computing-machine is rebuilding all the MAME systems from the mame0196 branch [14:37]

SketchCowOK, that may break the psx thing again
Which is fine, it's a single line and a trivial recompilation

DFJustinthere are some nice hitmen demos on psx for the demoscene collection [15:30]
SketchCowI see no point in getting Vice/etc aware
Oh, yeah, I'm sure
I just think I'd rather word slowly spread initially
I'm happy to revisit the Mac stuff too
And, well, we're sort of revisiting everything
[15:30]
..... (idle for 23mn)
Not surprisingly, the PSX CHD downloads are taking a while. [15:53]

DFJustinwasn't jvilk working on a thing to do range accesses instead of downloading entire files, that would be ideal
chd is designed for random access
[15:59]

SketchCowWe'll find out
In the meantime
My friend told me about a service where people play PSX games at Sony
So we'll see how this all goes
710gb of PSX CHDs
Are there information lists somewhere matching these items to CHDs? Like metadata?
[17:47]
DFJustinhttps://raw.githubusercontent.com/mamedev/mame/master/hash/psx.xml [17:49]
SketchCowGreat
I'm now putting all the multi-CHD items aside (for now)
That leaves an anaemic, sad 2,119

Vito`speaking of revisiting things
Lord_Nigh: you had mentioned things like the Canon Cat disk drive not being fully supported. would shipping a Cat disk drive to someone help? or a whole Cat?

SketchCowMy biggest issues now are getting the cover art from Mobygames into the items on the archive.
So, uh, not that big a problem. I suspect by midnight tonight (considering I have to go drop a buddy off at the airport), we'll have a terrifyingly complete and working colection with scads of metadata.
[19:52]
323 of the 2,700 listed PSX programs have "multi" discs
Although only a handful are actually multiple CDs.
[20:00]
DFJustinwhat are the rest? [20:12]
SketchCowDemo plus Full
LOT of those
[20:16]
DFJustinyou must have them split up oddly, those should be separate [20:19]

DFJustinnot caching the chd download is kind of brutal [21:56]
.... (idle for 19mn)
baiyeah. but at that size it may even be over the size which a browser will cache, I seem to remember in the past that there was some sort of upper limit to the size of files that browsers would cache, something like 50mb, but I dunno if that's just a relic from the past or not
yeah in ff looks like 5mb for in-memory cache, 50mb for files
for on-disk, I mean
browser.cache.disk.max_entry_size / browser.cache.memory.max_entry_size
oh, and even more fun: "Note that we have a "hard" limit of never storing anything bigger than 1/8th of the total cache size, which is 1 GB max, so the effective limit is 125 MB, not matter what you set the pref to."
