08:32
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
i have the battle chess dos cd which is ANNOYING AS HELL |
08:32
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
because the game actually DEPENDS on the offset being a certain way or the music and sound on the cd plays out of sync with the animation |
08:33
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
i have two battle chess cds; one is from the ?first pressing? and one from the ?Second? |
08:33
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the offsets are very slightly different! |
09:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
ok, the 1993 pressing looks to have an offset of... lets see... |
09:11
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
write offset is +0 |
09:11
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
combined offset is 2 sectors long of +79 |
09:11
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the lookup for drive shows an offset of +667, which *4 is 2668, which is more than one sector |
09:12
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
subtract 2352 to see how much in the second sector it is in bytes, and it is 316 |
09:12
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
find samples, which is 316/4 which is... 79! |
09:12
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
so the write offset is ZERO and the read offset is EXACTLY 667 |
09:13
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
in fact the redump.org instructions here are SCREWED UP |
09:13
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
they assumed the offset would never be more than the size of a sector the way they wrote it |
09:13
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
and expect you to use an offset of 79 where the correct offset is 667 |
09:14
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
all rips done following their instructions in this case will have an extra sector of gibberish at the beginning and some stuff truncated off the end |
09:24
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
each sector holds 588 samples |
09:26
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
what i find kind of interesting is what is in those 667 bytes of garbage which the drive returns; they seem to be 'scrambled' data, and at offset 76*4 what looks like a valid data sector header appears but with an invalid/gibberish ID... i wonder if the fact that the offset is so large is actually a firmware bug on the drives (since theres about 6-8 external hp usb cd/dvd drives with this same offset) |
09:26

Nintendud |
and their guide is terrible |
16:36

Nintendud |
sorry that you had to go through that...! |
16:37

|
Schbirid |
oh god please share any better way |
16:38
🔗
|
Nintendud |
I only know how to rip single track discs for them |
16:38
🔗
|
Nintendud |
For my purposes, making a .bin/.cue copy with imgburn is fine |
16:38
🔗
|
Nintendud |
I've been meaning to go through 'training' to learn how to dump multitrack discs |
16:39
🔗
|
Nintendud |
I also hear that a number of drives just aren't suitable for it too |
16:39
🔗
|
Nintendud |
-_- |
16:40
🔗
|
Nintendud |
Lord_Nigh: also, I only need the extended play vol 2 disc |
16:41

Schbirid |
:( |
16:41
🔗
|
Schbirid |
single track is easy enough |
16:41
🔗
|
Nintendud |
thankfully |
16:42
🔗
|
Nintendud |
I actually bought a second CD drive so I can eventually learn how to rip the multitrack discs |
18:33
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
Nintendud: the cd has 22 audio tracks btw (battle chess) |
18:33
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
this is like the cd from hell |
18:34
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the pc gamer cd has 3 audio tracks |
18:34
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
battle chess also seems to have NO PREGAPS between tracks |
18:36
🔗
|
balrog_ |
how about using EAC to rip the audio tracks? |
18:37
🔗
|
balrog_ |
or XLD on a MAc |
18:37

18:37
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
redump's crazy instructions INVOLVE EAC |
18:37
🔗
|
balrog_ |
link them? |
18:37
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
http://redump.org/guide/cddumping/ |
18:38
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
both EAC and isobuster are used |
18:39
🔗
|
balrog_ |
yeah, I see. |
18:39
🔗
|
balrog_ |
isobuster for the data portion |
18:40
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
isobuster also for the raw read stuff to find the write offset, which in the case of battle chess is ZERO, but in the case of the pc gamer cd i cannot find ebcause the cd drive gives errors on the 3 relevant sectors, possibly due to some issue when the cd was pressed |
18:40
🔗
|
balrog_ |
ugh |
18:40
🔗
|
balrog_ |
and another drive doesn't show any difference? |
18:40
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
i don't have another drive |
18:41
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
that i can use with isobuster and eac |
18:41
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
easily |
18:41
🔗
|
balrog_ |
there's gotta be other software that can do raw 2352-byte dumps |
19:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
there may be but nothing is open source afaik |
19:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
NOTHING |
19:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
except for cdrdao |
19:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
and cdrdao is commandline only |
19:06
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
xduplicator is a frontend for cdrdao, but *drumroll* is not open source! |
19:06
🔗
|
winr4r |
dd? |
19:06
🔗
|
balrog_ |
I doubt dd can read 2352-byte sectors |
19:06
🔗
|
winr4r |
yeah, sorry for jumping in without context |
19:06
🔗
|
winr4r |
i'm sure you've thought of this shit |
19:17
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
dd reads 2048 bytes |
19:17
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
per sector |
19:17
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
iirc |
19:18
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
misses header, subchannels and ecc data and checksum |
19:19
🔗
|
balrog_ |
cdrdao read-cd --read-raw may work |
19:19
🔗
|
balrog_ |
we need an alternative to isobuster imho |
20:01
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
does anyone know of any documentation of the arj password protection system? my last attempt to find such has failed |
20:02
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
(short of possibly having source code to an opensource implementation, but at the time I was not in the mood to dig through all the source looking for it) |
20:02
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
I'm also curious about rar password protection |
20:03
🔗
|
balrog_ |
rar ... check the unarchiver |
20:05
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
i'm more curious about arj. I had done some work on a zip password recovery tool (which could still use work). However, I have some passworded arj files I made in the early-to-mid 90s that I no longer remember the password for |
20:05
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
though I can see a similar issue with other archive formats in the future |
21:35
🔗
|
Nintendud |
Lord_Nigh: seriously, you don't have to follow redump instructions... they are probably incorrect. |
21:35
🔗
|
Nintendud |
unless your masochistic or something |
21:35
🔗
|
Nintendud |
you're* |
21:36
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
i followed them anyway |
21:36
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
they need fixing badly |
21:37
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
but i followed the spirit of the instructions |
21:37
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
this pc gamer cd is a good example of where their instructions fail badly, when there is a BLANK GAP not even valid scrambled data between data and audio the cd drive gives an error instead opf showing styuff |
21:37
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
maybe certain cd firmwares have no issue but this one does |
21:38
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
i.e. 3 LBA addresses are INVALID and point to unreadable crap |
21:38
🔗
|
balrog_ |
Lord_Nigh: sometime we have to go over them |
21:39
🔗
|
balrog_ |
I'd like to add cdrdao as an alternative dumping util |
21:39
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
also their instructions fail when a drive is known to have an offset larger than 588 |
21:41
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
ripping some CD+G discs (mostly from a company named "Sound Choice") is a pain in the arse, because they screwed with the TOC in such a way that a simple CD or CD+G player wouldn't care, but a computer drive and software will freak out |
21:42
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
is that like the way that certain cd-i ready cds with a corrupt TOC like "the apprentice" are a huge pain in the ass to dump? |
21:42
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
(Sound Choice are assholes that think they are above copyright allowances for making copies) |
21:42
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
because the first data sector appears in the pregap |
21:42
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
i have no experience with cd-i |
21:43
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
honestly i have no idea how those ended up getting a CD logo on them because i think the violate the greenbook cd-i and cd-xa standards |
21:43
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
but some tracks are labled as data tracks or the like when you pull it up in various computer software |
21:45
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
I'd pull one up in EAC or isobuster for illustration, but I need to finish getting ready to leave |
21:45
🔗
|
Coderjoe |
perhaps when I return home |
21:45
🔗

btw, XLD for Mac has a nice ripping enging |

(I also don't have EAC or isobuster installed at the moment) |
21:46
🔗
|
balrog_ |
it can handle a lot of discs that others have trouble with, and gives even better results |
21:47
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
grr track3 of the best of the cd cd keeps giving test vs rip checksum inconsistency in eac |
21:47

i need to know whats eating all but 5gb of space on the g4 though |
21:48
🔗
|
balrog_ |
be sure to have the config set up right |
21:48
🔗
|
balrog_ |
probably the memac stuff |
21:48
🔗

balrog_ |
delete all the completed memac stuff, and only the completed stuff |
21:49
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
where? |
22:02
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
ooh VERY INTERESTING! |
22:02
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the 1991 pressing of battle chess has a BIG write offset |
22:02
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the 1993 pressing has a write offset of ZERO |
22:03
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
probably better equipment on the latter |
22:03
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
different company too |
22:03
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
on the cd ring |
22:03
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
lemme calc write offset... |
22:05
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
drive read offset is 79+588 = 667 |
22:06
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the combined offset is 301+588 |
22:06
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
so the write offset is 301-79 = 222 samples |
22:07
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
that's quite a bit, and may explain some desync issues i had back in the day... |
22:07
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
well slight desync |
23:10
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
Nintendud: i should have the files all together for the pcgamer best of cd soon |
23:11
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
the audio track2 MIGHT have one or two bad samples |
23:14
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
Nintendud: should i convert the tif scans to png? i assume yes |
23:39
🔗
|
Lord_Nigh |
grr it loses the embedded color profile if i do that so i left them as tif |
