What can I say, my love of saving old shit is usually overshadowed by my desire to feed my family :-D |

dashcloud: what does the -i option to mdir do? I don't see it in the man page. |

I believe it tells the program to what to read in- in this case, an image file. It's briefly mentioned in the mtools manpage, almost as an aside in an example |

just tried it out- mdir -i does in fact cause mdir to read in a disk image, and provide a directory listing of it |

Can somebody give me the short version of the difference between a cue/bin vs. an iso... advantages/disadvantages, when to use one over the other, and so on? |
14:12
🔗
|
DFJustin |
cue/bin is closer to the raw cd data, iso is the equivalent of a single track interpreted as computer data |
14:12
🔗
|
DFJustin |
so iso is only really valid for single-track data cds |
14:13
🔗
|
DFJustin |
iso is also a bit smaller in size and is supported by more software |
14:13
🔗
|
DFJustin |
but there are many cds that require cue/bin to represent all the contents |
14:13
🔗
|
DFJustin |
e.g. anything with multiple tracks or audio tracks |
14:15
🔗
|
DFJustin |
personally I rip with ImgBurn which chooses the format automatically based on the cd contents, if you try to save as iso when cue/bin is needed it gives you an error message |
14:18
🔗
|
DFJustin |
the main advantage of iso for our purposes is that IA lets you browse the contents of iso files https://archive.org/download/cdrom-exdos1/exdos1.iso/ |

cue/bin is more accurate :/ |

I don't see why a browser for cue/bin would be that complex |
14:30
🔗
|
godane |
cause cue/bin has layers |
14:30
🔗
|
godane |
so they could be complete different files with the same name on 2 tracks |
14:35
🔗
|
DFJustin |
it wouldn't be that complex but someone would have to actually do it |
14:39

godane: you'd simulate a directory hierarchy |
14:39
🔗
|
DFJustin |
just converting the sectors back to 2048 internally and then treating it like an iso would get you 90% of discs |
14:39
🔗
|
DFJustin |
data on multiple tracks is not very common |
15:19

|
SmileyG |
why not rip both? D: |
15:32
🔗
|
DFJustin |
that's good too although given a cue/bin you can convert to iso |
