What's the best way to losslessly rip a video DVD? Is BIN/CUE file format suitable? |
04:01
🔗
|
kyan |
(That's the easiest for me, and I can play it easily, so I like that.) |
04:03
🔗
|
DFJustin |
ISO |
04:04
🔗
|
DFJustin |
DVDs don't have the monkey business that CDs do where you need multi tracks etc |
04:04
🔗
|
kyan |
Hmm. Ok... Is BIN/CUE bad, or just not necessary? |
04:04
🔗
|
kyan |
ISOs are annoying because they mount in the file browser instead of playing |
04:05
🔗
|
DFJustin |
not necessary, and for archive.org upload not derivable |
04:05
🔗
|
kyan |
Ah. Ok, hmm |
04:07
🔗
|
kyan |
As long as they don't lose data as compared to ISO, I might still use BIN/Cue and hope that IA adds support for it at a later date. Thanks for your thoughts though, I'll think about it :) |
04:08
🔗
|
yipdw |
kyan: alter your system settings, take on some inconvenience to save everyone else some trouble |
04:08
🔗
|
yipdw |
it's not that big of a deal to have Windows add another program for "Open With" |
04:09
🔗
|
kyan |
"many "old-timers" rightly consider BIN/CUE to be the most pure copy of a disc. On the other hand ISO only keeps the files and folders on the disc and loses much of the other information" |
04:10
🔗
|
kyan |
is that wrong? |
04:10
🔗
|
* |
kyan is paranoid |
04:12
🔗
|
DFJustin |
it's not as dramatic as that and in any case mostly only applicable to CDs |
04:12
🔗
|
kyan |
Um, ok |
04:12
🔗
|
kyan |
Thanks! |
04:12
🔗
|
kyan |
:) |
04:13
🔗
|
DFJustin |
there's probably a weird example somewhere in the universe but every dvd I know of is 1 track data which means no extra data in bin/cue |
04:13
🔗
|
kyan |
so is an ISO file just the data, like the BIN file is? |
04:14
🔗
|
kyan |
(in other words, could I take an ISO file, rename it to BIN, and use it with an existing CUE file?) Or is there extra information preserved in ISO? |
04:14
🔗
|
DFJustin |
so it's a bit complicated because of the way CDs work |
04:15
🔗
|
DFJustin |
for starters, it's the other way around, BIN would be the one to have extra information if there is any |
04:16
🔗
|
kyan |
Oh, hmm |
04:16
🔗
|
DFJustin |
basically BIN is a copy of every sector on the CD in a "raw" format, ISO is the data in a "logical" format which is decoded so that you can see plain text in it if you open it in a hex editor etc |
04:16
🔗
|
kyan |
so I would be safest to go with BIN? |
04:16
🔗
|
kyan |
Oh! I'd definitely go for whatever is closer to the source then |
04:16
🔗
|
DFJustin |
for a CD or DVD which has one (data) track ISO and BIN will have the same information essentially |
04:16
🔗
|
DFJustin |
but BIN will take up a little bit more space |
04:17
🔗
|
kyan |
Ok. |
04:17
🔗
|
DFJustin |
for a CD with multiple tracks or non-data tracks, ISO can't be used and you have to use BIN |
04:17
🔗
|
DFJustin |
the CUE file indicates where each track begins and ends in the BIN |
04:17
🔗
|
kyan |
Ah, so it sounds like BIN is the better format for preserving things and ISO is the better format for making it useful? |
04:17
🔗
|
DFJustin |
you can always convert ISO from BIN if applicable |
04:18
🔗
|
kyan |
Cool. Thanks! :) |
