I guess that's because I've never really coded except for by myself.... [05:25] even if you're coded by yourself, it's useful to get into the habit of descriptive messages -- it just makes the commit log that much more useful [05:25] just wrote what you did [05:26] "Fixed logging", "Removed unused funtions", "Wrote new caeser cipher for password encryption" [05:26] I'd suggest more about *why* you did something and not *what* [05:26] or not just what [05:27] what can be discovered from the diff, intent is a lot harder to guess at [05:28] *** mistym has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [05:28] Hmm. That's an interesting thought [05:29] sometimes i include a traceback when i fix a crash [05:29] it's useful to have what when skimming logs; it's useful to have why when you're looking at a commit and going "why the hell did I do this" [05:30] Mm. I've only ever gone back and tried to find specific commits maybe once or twice, it's never been easy becasue of my sloppy habits :P [05:30] the suggestions at https://git-scm.com/book/ch5-2.html are pretty good [05:31] although that's kind of a metaphor for my life as a whole [05:33] it takes time to develop the habit and you'll never stick with it 100% [05:33] but try it out, you'll probably find yourself using the features of the source control system more to help yourself out [05:34] by "you" I really mean "anyone" [05:51] *** wednesday has joined #archiveteam-bs [05:55] *** wednesday has quit IRC (Client Quit) [05:59] *** wednesday has joined #archiveteam-bs [06:03] *** mistym has joined #archiveteam-bs [06:04] *** wednesday has quit IRC (Client Quit) [06:04] *** wednesday has joined #archiveteam-bs [06:08] *** kyan has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 258 seconds) [06:11] *** kyan has joined #archiveteam-bs [06:12] https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CKuqgDPW8AALNzg.png [06:12] I support this. [06:13] beautiful [06:13] I thought you were darking all the ISIS videos?... [06:14] why would you dark them? [06:14] ^ That's a creative nick. [06:14] Fitting. [06:16] Ctrl-S: Presumably so IA isn't providing the Islamic State help distributing their propaganda.... see this post https://archive.org/post/1033012/constant-removal-of-isis-videos-and-publications-from-internet-archive [06:17] I'd be happier if there was an actual substantive reply to the letter from an Archive employee though... [06:18] ^ [06:21] make dark -> wait for content warning feature -> make undark seems like what might be happening there [06:22] i'm glad that thread doesn't have more replies, it'd make people think it's some sort of permanent decision [06:22] On the other hand, they have in their terms of service: "Because the content of the Collections comes from around the world and from many different sectors, the Collections may contain information that might be deemed offensive, disturbing, pornographic, racist, sexist, bizarre, misleading, fraudulent, or otherwise objectionable. The Archive does not endorse or sponsor any content in the Collections, nor does it guarante [06:22] e or warrant that the content available in the Collections is accurate, complete, noninfringing, or legally accessible in your jurisdiction, and you agree that you are solely responsible for abiding by all laws and regulations that may be applicable to the viewing of the content." [06:23] Sounds like they're saying they're just saving it, without necessarily judging it so much [06:23] i don't get it, what does that have to do with anything [06:24] It sounds like they're saying that they don't necessarily agree with the media they provide access to [06:25] which would seem to imply that they're OK with providing a platform for a variety of opinions. To some extent, I guess [06:26] well sure but there's also the "you know, beheading is pretty brutal" thing [06:26] anyway I don't work for IA, I'm speculating and will therefore shut up [06:30] *** kyan_ has joined #archiveteam-bs [06:30] On a completely different topic: Does anyone know if there's such a thing as an on-demand book-to-IA service? In other words, where one can purchase a book, donate it to the Internet Archive, sponsor its digitization, and wind up with a borrowable ebook?
