05:08 🔗 bahramras Hi everyone
05:08 🔗 Frogging bahramras: this is the channel where more lengthy discussions take place, #archiveteam is more of an announcement channel
05:08 🔗 bahramras I'm trying to join Archive team
05:08 🔗 bahramras WHAT FORSOOTH, PRITHEE TELL ME THE SECRET WORD
05:08 🔗 Frogging also, Archive Team doesn't have a formal registration procedure. The wiki is just the wiki, you don't need an account on there to participate in Archive Team projects
05:08 🔗 Frogging and you don't have to keep saying that also
05:09 🔗 bahramras oh ok I got you
05:09 🔗 Frogging you don't need a wiki account unless there's something you want to edit on the wiki :)
05:09 🔗 bahramras thanks for reply
05:09 🔗 bahramras no I don't
05:09 🔗 Frogging what do you want to do with Archive Team?

11:07 🔗 schbirid2 Please start it again at plextor drive (PX-708, 712, 716, 755, 760 etc)
11:08 🔗 schbirid2 it IS a 755 drive

12:07 🔗 Aoede Is 7z good for archiving?
12:13 🔗 schbirid2 depends
12:14 🔗 schbirid2 it does not preserve metadata of files
12:15 🔗 Aoede I'm mostly worried about data corruption
12:17 🔗 Aoede For zip there's recorvery tools etc

12:56 🔗 MrRadar Aoede: I read a blog post a while ago criticizing the design of the LZMA compression scheme used by 7z for its poor design with respect to data corruption
12:58 🔗 Aoede MrRadar: hmm... Looks like I'll stick with zip for now, thanks!
12:58 🔗 MrRadar Yeah, probably a good bet
12:58 🔗 MrRadar I'm trying to find it again to confirm my memory
13:00 🔗 MrRadar Found it: http://www.nongnu.org/lzip/xz_inadequate.html

13:09 🔗 GE has joined #archiveteam-bs
13:14 🔗 icedice has joined #archiveteam-bs
13:21 🔗 t2t2 I prefer zpaq, it has error detection and decent compression with sensible memory usage
13:24 🔗 JAA MrRadar: I only skimmed through that article, but it seems that most of the points raised there are specific to xz. Although both xz and 7z use LZMA, the container formats are different. The checksum not protecting the variable field length (2.5), for example, is a container problem.
13:45 🔗 joepie91 http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nederland/gemeentearchief-waalre-gered-van-enorme-brand
13:45 🔗 joepie91 in 2012, the city hall burned down after being hit by two cars, but the archive survived because it was in a fireproof room
13:45 🔗 zino has joined #archiveteam-bs
13:45 🔗 joepie91 after that, the archive was moved to a separate building
13:45 🔗 joepie91 which caught fire today
13:46 🔗 joepie91 and the news article is a bit unclear, but seems to claim that "part of the archive has been saved"
13:46 🔗 joepie91 something something archives burn
13:46 🔗 * zino logs in and the first he hears is "archive caught fire today"
13:48 🔗 MrRadar Reminds me of how the US Patent Office lost all their files in the early 1800s because they were storing them in a temporary location while they were waiting for a new fire-proof brick building to be constructed
13:48 🔗 zino Which arechive are we talking about here?
13:48 🔗 zino archive*

22:19 🔗 jtn2 http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Organization_for_Transformative_Works notes a restrictive robots.txt
22:19 🔗 jtn2 Worth contacting them?
22:42 🔗 Somebody2 jtn2: Yes, PLASE send an email to info@archive.org about that. It likely just fell through the cracks, but that's why sending another email is a good idea.
22:45 🔗 Somebody2 OK, looking at the twitter post, it looks like it has gotten somewhat more contact. I'll still poke a few more people, though.

23:39 🔗 JensRex God damn it. DO just shut down my hypervisor for ~45 minutes.
23:40 🔗 JensRex Unannounced.
23:47 🔗 ivan heh yes DO is not very good unless you really need to be in one of their DCs in particular
23:48 🔗 GE has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
23:48 🔗 ivan they have a DDoS detector that will drop you from the net for 3 hours (possibly repeatedly) if someone floods with ~1gbit for a few seconds
23:49 🔗 ivan definitely not advice for those beyond the reach of USG: do that to every IP on their netblock briefly
23:54 🔗 JensRex The control panel said the hypervisor was down for maintenance.
23:56 🔗 ivan my DO VM kept hanging due to a bad host machine so I just created another one and lucked out
