[00:00] We got to play nothing for electricity, our internet ourselves and even then we are worth having for the university. The members only pay in free time and got work with expensive tech for free. [00:02] Kaz, more questions? [00:02] none at the mo, just interesting to see how things work [00:03] twoTBHetz: Very cool, thanks for sharing [00:03] twoTBHetz: I am STRONGLY in favor of your group running Warriors, that sounds like a fabulous idea. [00:04] We (ArchiveTeam) probably can't offer much in return, as we are basically just a very thin coordination layer between donations of time, skill and hardware. [00:05] We are currently laying our own glass fiber tocken ring between houses so we are less dependent on single routers dying. This also means replacing old multimode cabels. [00:05] Awesome [00:06] It would also be worth reaching out (via an email to info@archive.org) to see what sort of collaboration the Internet Archive might want to establish with your group. [00:06] What would we want to do with the internet archive? [00:07] *** ivan` is now known as ivan_ [00:08] Somebody @thin layer that is a helpfull metaphor. [00:09] So you can basically offer nothing you did not explicitly got donated for a certain purpose [00:14] Somebody2, can you give me an estimate, what influence us running 75 ip4s worth of warrions would have to your fire power in an emergency like tumblr. [00:22] I will put that topic on the agenda next year. Let's see what comes up on my site. when i am online you can always ask me how things stand. [00:23] i am going afk soonish. Just be aware that we likely patch out the hell out of your images before we run them. [00:30] Once upon a time at a Chaos Computer Club event there was a "Pixelflut" (a giant display where you can flip the color of pixels via http request). We saturated our 10GBit/s link but we could not get the complete display under our controll since severeal other were firing GBit/s too. One of our former members realized that he could send faster by patching the linux tcp stack so that no "connection finished" would be sent. That way we [00:30] ended up with our name all over the display. Later we were told to stop, the kernel of the pixelflut host did not take that many unfinished tcp connections well and it had to be rebooted. [00:31] Well that is an older story when we where a little more extreme but it might well be that we make some changes to your formula. [00:33] Closing tcp connections is expensive when you only submit a few bytes. [00:35] anyway yeah such exploits are unlikely but possible [00:39] anything can be clogged it seems [00:39] kyounko, with right people and stakes [00:39] how did people forget common sense [00:40] when I was a kid, it was a 10mbit ethernet LAN connected by a 56k leased line, either analog POTS or direct digital [00:41] no one ever engineered for the bottle neck, not then, not now, and it seems not ever [00:41] its just slow, deal with the day long download, but its a 24/7 switched on computer system [00:42] I had to use DCC resume in 1998 for my 33.6 modem [00:43] HTTP didn't do resume then [00:43] did FTP? I dont remember [00:44] i likely wasn-#t even born [00:44] so how do you know what to believe if you didn't live through it? [00:45] twoTBHetz: things you might want to do with IA: [00:45] - mirror parts of it [00:45] we never had ISDN here, but all of germany did [00:45] - convert stuff from it into other formats [00:45] - assist people in uploading things to it [00:46] That's about it [00:46] we got a big encoding cloud ;) [00:46] "big" [00:46] I don't trust the cloud [00:46] our own machines [00:46] as for how much influence running 75 IPs of Warriors... IDK, depends on how much other power we had donated. I can be certain it would be welcomed, though! [00:47] That is not very "sellable" to people which ask "why???" [00:47] why what? [00:47] why not instagram and snapchat? [00:47] modifying the grab scripts could be an issue, if it damaged the integrity of what got grabbed (although you'd still be welcome to do it, it just might not get included in the Wayback Machine) [00:47] "why help Archive*" [00:48] oh right, forget everything [00:48] throw it all away [00:48] Ah, the sales pitch is: "Help us get copies of culture that would otherwise be deleted!" [00:48] illegal culture? :O [00:48] Not generally, no [00:49] And what you get in return is ... copies of what is grabbed, if you want it. [00:49] packetstorm security still exists [00:49] In any case, I have to AFK soon, too. [00:49] that should be archived before its gone [00:50] I hope i seem other thoughts on that bye [01:15] *** namenick9 has joined #archiveteam-bs [01:23] *** trvz has quit IRC () [02:05] *** VerifiedJ has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [02:20] I hadn't seen the neat bot work by HadeanEon before; that's pretty cool.
