I like the approach of webrecorder, but it is still daunting to setup (for regular users) and it didin't work out of the box for say facebook, which needs catching up with websites. Is there anything current going on, and most, specifically, any thoughts or attempts of doing something [20:25] like this by building your own browser adding a capturing layer (chromium or mozilla?) [20:27] hanoii: Who’s your target audience? If you’re fine with command line interfaces wpull works for most static websites. [20:28] I’m currently building a preservation tool based on Google Chrome: https://github.com/PromyLOPh/crocoite [20:28] (Note the “related projects” section at the end of the README.) [20:29] @PurpleSym students performing research mostly on social media sites on a specific subject - I can't just do static websites, I should be able to log in to facebook, capture a specific post/comment that should be private and be able to reference that later on, so it has to work around user events, js, etc. [20:30] (looking crocoite...) [20:32] In that case I would say webrecorder is the best option you have. [20:34] I run it locally and facebook was not properly captured, so the initial test failed right away. Might want to contribute to it, but at some point i have the feeling that working on top of chromium or mozilla, meaning right into the browser code, might bet me the least maintainability option - reading on crocoite thouth, looks interesting, isn't something similar to what I am describing? [20:36] Ah, reading more into it seems like it's not as it does need to understand a bit of what you are capturing [20:36] quite a bit probalby [20:37] I mean, crocoite basically scripts the Chrome browser and can do a lot of things, even logging into Facebook and capturing a private post – if you’re willing to write the code. [20:38] but it needs you to know how to send stuff to facebook, so your script has to know what to do, and if facebook changes it, you need to catch up with it, correct? in that venue I do think webrecorder approach is better, is they attempt to capture what you do and then do it again. [20:39] looking at brozzler now though from your site as well. [20:40] hanoii: True, you’ll specifically need to code every interaction. [20:43] *** BlueMax has joined #archiveteam-bs [20:45] Oddly: That should probably be fine as long as you don't launch tenthousands of them at once and thus overload the tracker. [20:51] yeah, 20 was fine, didn't see much increase on the tracker either though. [20:51] that Terraform project works very well. Can spin up as many as you want within minutes when needed. Nice for those last minute projects [20:54] Welp. Its 7:54am and I haven't had sleep because I was monitoring the rsync target for uolforums... I guess I'll start working on projects I would like to get started when I wake up. [20:55] JAA: Would you mind creating fanfiction-grab and fanfiction-items on github?
