02:03 🔗 Raccoon > The spokesperson added that all of the Iron March users found on Airbnb appeared to have been guests, rather than hosts.
02:03 🔗 ivan want to make a joke about the item being darked but it's the Internet
02:03 🔗 Raccoon well that's boring
02:04 🔗 Raccoon Headline conclusion is clickbait aimed at "landlords discriminate against black people looking for a room"

02:14 🔗 SketchCow I care.
02:15 🔗 Raccoon Extracting money from neo-nazis is probably a good thing.

03:07 🔗 Myself So, help me understand "Server returned 0 (HERR)", would I recognize this status by another name?
03:10 🔗 Wingy has joined #archiveteam-bs
03:11 🔗 Wingy Can anyone see my messages?
03:11 🔗 markedL Myself it's one of the connection type errors, so no data was transferred
03:11 🔗 OrIdow6 Wingy: No
03:11 🔗 OrIdow6 (As old as it is)
03:12 🔗 Wingy OrIdow6 lol
03:12 🔗 Wingy Thanks
03:12 🔗 Wingy My TheLounge instance is working now
03:12 🔗 markedL Myself : actually, I'm not certain if a disconnection in the middle might give that error also
03:13 🔗 cerca has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
03:14 🔗 Myself Given the barely-dribbles on my bandwidth graph, I suspect it represents a very small or nonexistent exchange of packets...
03:15 🔗 markedL the other 0, are SSLERR , CONNERR
03:15 🔗 JAA HERR stands for "header error" and occurs when wget either fails to find the header termination (i.e. empty line) or can't extract the response status code.
03:15 🔗 JAA (There's one other case involving proxies, but that's not relevant here.)
03:16 🔗 JAA I think if the connection is never established or the request can't be sent or similar, you won't get an HERR.
03:17 🔗 Myself At any moment, the majority of my plays.tv threads are "(HERR), sleeping....", so I was wondering.
03:18 🔗 JAA Yeah, their servers suck, so wget fails to read the response headers within some reasonable time limit.
03:19 🔗 Myself gotcha. Thank you for your patience with this newbie, by the way! :)
03:19 🔗 JAA :-)

03:52 🔗 LowLevelM SketchCow: What do you think about changing the irc wiki links to hackint?
03:52 🔗 Wingy Why is everything moving to hackint btw?
03:53 🔗 LowLevelM 19:50 <@JAA> EFnet sucks because: netsplits, server outages, ridiculous channel limits, no services, broken web chat; hackint's awesome because: stable, services, security (TLS required), accessibility (XMPP etc., though that's apparently not working properly at the moment), policy, backed by like-minded people (Chaos Computer Club)
03:57 🔗 LowLevelM 19:56 <@JAA> Oh yeah, two more points for the list above: EFnet has ridiculous limits not only for the number of channels you can join but also for nicknames and topic lengths. And hackint is one of the few networks that has valid TLS certificates.

04:13 🔗 kiiwii What would be the best way to archive gopherholes? I'm using this thing called gopherdl and putting a site into their own 7z archive, but I'm doing every site manually since I don't know of an automatic way of doing it.
04:14 🔗 markedL ooh, uh, is .warc defined for gopher: ?
04:14 🔗 kiiwii From what I see on y'all's wiki, no.
04:15 🔗 JAA Nope
04:15 🔗 kiiwii That's why I was just putting each gopherhole in a archive lol
04:15 🔗 JAA WARC is very much "implementation first please".
04:15 🔗 JAA But even though I don't know much about Gopher, WARC is probably the right format for it.
04:15 🔗 m007a83 has quit IRC (Fuck you Comcast)
04:16 🔗 JAA Someone just needs to write the code for it.
04:16 🔗 markedL gopherdl is in python so we could put it into a pipeline warrior at least
04:16 🔗 Wingy has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out)
04:16 🔗 markedL how many sites are there tho
04:17 🔗 JAA 392 unique servers per http://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw?gopher/0/v2/vstat
04:17 🔗 JAA With 4.4M selectors
04:17 🔗 odemgi_ has joined #archiveteam-bs
04:18 🔗 kiiwii I mean, I can manually put in all 392 unique servers through gopherdl and just let it run overnight

04:22 🔗 markedL http://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw?=gopher.floodgap.com+70+312f6e6577 can put these webpages into .warc. and WBM
04:22 🔗 kiiwii oh
04:24 🔗 JAA Yeah, but meh.
04:24 🔗 kiiwii I'll need to read up on .warc files
04:25 🔗 JAA Also, Floodgap specifically will almost certainly ban you very quickly.
04:25 🔗 kiiwii for going through and archiving their crap?
04:25 🔗 JAA Yeah, they have bot traps and everything.
04:26 🔗 kiiwii dang, that's stupid :/
04:30 🔗 OrIdow6 Point of WARC is to get metadata + most accurate representation of source - by doing it through an HTTP proxy you get more public access (through WBM) in the short term, but at the cost of no metadata + potential generation loss (from conversion to HTML) in the long-term - instead of warcs of Gopher protocol directly (best), or low-metadata but pristine 7z files (medium)
04:32 🔗 markedL it's small enough to do in 3x , once per format

17:16 🔗 i0npulse has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
17:17 🔗 SketchCow As usual, when any of them leave the realm of observable facts (things are uploaded into the internet archive, the internet archive is a 503(c) company) and move into the realm of speculation; their opinions and ideas fall pretty flat.
17:19 🔗 Raccoon You mean there's an argument that consists of more than just pride and desire to be the exclusive go-to?
17:20 🔗 SketchCow That's not what they're taking issue with.
17:20 🔗 Raccoon I'm honestly intrigued and curious how it goes.
17:20 🔗 Myself Seems to me that they're shocked, SHOCKED, that librarians have rent to pay and food to buy.
17:21 🔗 SketchCow That's not it either.
17:21 🔗 Raccoon No, that's the Old Time Radio peep's argument
17:22 🔗 SketchCow I think it's a combination of general unhappiness with magazine scans being uploaded a lot, and a general lack of UI/effort on Internet Archive's part to explain ourselves.
17:23 🔗 SketchCow Also, a belief that somehow we're making profit off their work, which is not true.
17:23 🔗 Raccoon So they're bashful of their own sub-par quality, and blame it on lack of PR on your part to insist people be more grateful for what they get
17:24 🔗 SketchCow AND a belief that Mega is somehow better in some way, I mean, jesus christ we've been trying to extradite the founder for years.
17:24 🔗 SketchCow No, that's not it either.
17:24 🔗 SketchCow Maybe misunderstanding is just endemic to all communities instead of this one.
17:25 🔗 SketchCow I find young technical men are really, REALLY good at being handed "A" and "L" and then just flat-out extrapolating the entire alphabet from that data sample.
17:25 🔗 SketchCow And then getting really, really angry at that alphabet.
17:25 🔗 SketchCow Super, super angry.
17:27 🔗 Raccoon This is probably worth a wiki article somewhere
17:27 🔗 SketchCow No, no.
17:27 🔗 SketchCow That's not going to help anything.
17:27 🔗 Raccoon It's not going to help the idgets, but it'll give the rest of us full scope and laughing rights
17:27 🔗 SketchCow Look, scanning magazines is a lonely, annoying, unpleasant, low-reward high-risk hobby.
17:28 🔗 tech234a has joined #archiveteam-bs
17:28 🔗 SketchCow Anyone who has the personality to do it not poorly (using a feed scanner and never checking again) is fucking miserable.
17:28 🔗 Raccoon analog reproduction of anything is
17:28 🔗 SketchCow You work your ass off to get everything just right, and the result of your work is a little file that is now entering a world where copying it is trivial.
17:28 🔗 Myself if UI and effort to explain the mission is in short supply, surely it would benefit more than just this situation, isn't that where effort would be best directed?
17:28 🔗 Raccoon I'm still stupid proud that anyone would host my efforts on their machine boxes for more than 10 years so my grand kids might rediscover it
17:29 🔗 SketchCow https://archive.org/details/@kitsunebi77
17:29 🔗 SketchCow So, he's worked very hard and he's uploaded a bunch of stuff.
17:30 🔗 SketchCow All towards the goals of, as an unnamed colleage defines it "Endless pages of sexualized drawn-as-underage girls provided for an all-male adult audience"
17:31 🔗 SketchCow When I joined the archive as an employee, in 2011, I have to stress the situation that there were a set community of fellas on that site, users, who were VERY UNHAPPY their secret of The Internet Archive was being blown open by me, specifically me.
17:31 🔗 SketchCow The archive used to get, I think it was.... 50-100 new items a day.
17:31 🔗 SketchCow They would, stick with me here, THEY WOULD HARASS PEOPLE WHO UPLOADED MORE
17:32 🔗 i0npulse has joined #archiveteam-bs
17:32 🔗 SketchCow Because it was making it "too hard" to see all the new things
17:32 🔗 Raccoon this on IA?
17:32 🔗 SketchCow I came in, went "well", adjusted my top hat
17:32 🔗 SketchCow And here we fucking are.
17:32 🔗 SketchCow Raccoon, I haven't figured you out yet.
17:34 🔗 SketchCow Pulling this back to my pal godane - I haven't uploaded a magazine or frankly any scan in months.
17:34 🔗 SketchCow I have certainly uploaded stuff people FTP'd to me to get up there, but I'm not doing that myself, a script does it.
17:35 🔗 SketchCow There is also a set of automatic scripts I wrote in the last year that do most of the sorting for me, too. I don't even look at them.
17:36 🔗 Raccoon SketchCow, honoured I guess? :) But it's all interesting stuff and I think worthy an update to your livejournal at the least if not a wiki page.
17:36 🔗 SketchCow I certainly don't think the people in the retromags thread understand that 16,000 items are uploaded to internet archive in the open and similar collections a day.
17:36 🔗 SketchCow Or that we barely break even, partially by design

17:46 🔗 SketchCow Speaking of me not seeing things, I see the archive team inbox was filling up.
17:46 🔗 SketchCow I just added some rules to my sorter and that's draining now.
17:48 🔗 godane btw the scans that kitsunebi77 uploaded was scans with no known scanner (mostly) that he found else where
17:49 🔗 godane also btw i'm still trying to find some stuff like animage magazine cause there is a forum on vk.com that a shit ton of pages scans but no full issue to down
17:49 🔗 SketchCow I'm sure he'll respond joyfully to my e-mail.

17:54 🔗 Raccoon SketchCow: Speaking of IA constructive criticism, and maybe some light ribbing... mind if I ask here?
17:54 🔗 SketchCow I mean, this is in your theme
17:55 🔗 Raccoon Did you have any hand in the terriblehorrible stage audio work for that cDc panel on YouTube? Or can you prevent that shit from happening again? I noticed your name scrolling in the chats but didn't notice if you took credit.

19:42 🔗 SketchCow I just like where they're going "low quality scans".... archive.org doesn't scan magazines.
19:45 🔗 godane the only time i'm bother but IA scans is sometimes with magazines where words are cut of at the edge of pages
19:46 🔗 godane but some of that has to do with scanning a binder of magazines like any of the borrowed newsweek magazines

19:58 🔗 Raccoon If somebody made an Android app for taking 'photo scans', where I can just hover a phone over the table top, and it automatically snaps and crops each page-flip, I'd definitely get back into it. Quality and speed is pretty unmatched to flatbet scanner. Much less bleed-through from the other page side too.
19:58 🔗 SketchCow All those phone scanners are dog vomit.

20:01 🔗 Raccoon tripod mounts are 99 cents
20:04 🔗 Raccoon Think i'll ask someone from Open Camera what they think. Might be an easy add-on to at least experiment. It already has several sensor-based (ie, level detect) auto snap features. Might be able to get one for motion (no motion) detection auto snap.

20:33 🔗 JAA Raccoon: That exceeds EFnet's nick length limit. :-P
20:33 🔗 JAA But yeah, video with accelerometer data could be interesting.
20:34 🔗 Myself There's probably a market for that too, my workphone has some fancy "whiteboard scanner" camera app.
20:34 🔗 JAA I think most of the current apps just take photos/low-framerate videos and then try to stitch them together by detecting overlap.
20:35 🔗 Raccoon Video-mode document scanning will always be bad for the remainder of our lifetime. Still frame capture is absolutely necessary.
20:35 🔗 JAA When it should really be more like photogrammetry, e.g. using drones to create 3D models of entire buildings etc.
20:35 🔗 X-Scale has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 610 seconds)
20:35 🔗 X-Scale` is now known as X-Scale
20:36 🔗 Myself There might be superresolution techniques you could use if your IMU data is good enough. There's a research paper in here, I tellya.
20:36 🔗 Raccoon Nobody's making any moves to build a camera sensor that can take video at full hardware resolution and gigabit bandwidth.

22:08 🔗 JAA So, regarding Story Wars: there's a discussion forum on the site which is only visible with an account (but the API endpoint is accessible without login, lol). They aren't shutting down after all and claim they'll be safe for at least 5 years. Why this was only announced in some forum thread that is now buried on page 3 is beyond me.

22:17 🔗 JAA SPA of course.
22:18 🔗 JAA Anyway, I'll start an archival of the forums and blogs as well.

23:14 🔗 JAA At least the API can take a fair amount of abuse without any impact. It returns 403s and 500s for inexistent stuff though.
23:20 🔗 JAA Also, I noticed that there are "mature" stories which are only accessible with an account, and for those the API actually requires auth as well.
23:28 🔗 JAA There are only quite few of them though, 247 as of right now (out of ~70k IDs).
