Impressive that Mozilla hasn't managed to find a proper solution for their addons problem yet. You'd think they pay more attention to things that can break their entire ecosystem. |

If anyone still has Firefox addon woes: https://storage.googleapis.com/moz-fx-normandy-prod-addons/extensions/hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate%40mozilla.com-1.0.2-signed.xpi should fix it. That's what's distributed through the studies, and you can install it without enabling studies. |
12:41
🔗
|
JAA |
It simply adds a new intermediate certificate and forces a verification of the installed addons. |

All I want is a browser that is fast and reliable. I just want it to have no user tracking, and to mitigate trackers, and would comprehensively block annoying ads. |
17:40

ATrescue |
t3: ...and a browser where someone can remotely cripple it (Addon Scandal) is certainly not reliable. |

Dropping legacy addon support was necessary and fine. Not planning it properly and introducing the necessary APIs in time wasn't. There are many addons, including a bunch of very popular ones, that are still unportable to WebExtensions, e.g. many cookie manipulation tools. |

Figured out how to re-enable addons on Firefox 52 and up. The hotfix .xpi Mozilla released doesn't work there because an API is missing. Not sure from which version it does work. |
23:39
🔗
|
JAA |
What their hotfix does is simply add a particular certificate to the trust store explicitly. That way, the expired intermediate cert doesn't matter. Or at least that's how I understand it. |
23:40
🔗
|
JAA |
Of course, you can add that certificate manually as well. Here it is: https://transfer.notkiska.pw/YnCpg/signingca1addonsmozillaorg.crt (You can find it in the hotfix XPI linked earlier in the file experiments/skeleton/api.js.) |
23:40
🔗
|
JAA |
No need to explicitly trust anything, it seems. |
23:41
🔗
|
JAA |
To force Firefox to revalidate the addons, you can set app.update.lastUpdateTime.xpi-signature-verification on about:config to a value a few days in the past (anything above 24 hours should do I think; the value's in seconds, so just decrease one of the first few digits by one) and restart Firefox. |
23:44
🔗
|
JAA |
I wonder if the "no need to explicitly trust anything" thing means that any CA in the world could in principle sign addons and have them accepted by Firefox. |
