[00:10] *** icedice has joined #archiveteam-ot [00:16] *** DogsRNice has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [00:17] I saw in a documentary something about a tool called "Aleph". In that doc, it was used for indexing and finding public records which are not searcheable on the relevant government websites. Apparently it's by Belgian researchers or journalists. Does anyone know more? I can't find anything about it... [00:26] you know, i know some people who work at Lexis Nexis [00:26] aka a giant data company [00:26] I wonder what they use [01:15] *** icedice has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 506 seconds) [01:16] *** Oddly2 has joined #archiveteam-ot [01:32] *** Oddly2 has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 360 seconds) [02:08] *** Zerote has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 600 seconds) [02:57] you know what's weird [02:57] I still don't understand how the internet fundamentally works [02:57] like I understand DNS and stuff [02:57] but like [02:57] how TF does IP work? [02:57] it makes no sense [03:33] it does once you understand it, to be fair [03:33] much like many things in life [03:40] hmm ok [03:40] my main not-understanding is [03:40] how do you prevent a computer from lying about what their IP is? [03:40] beceause from everything I've heard, IP is decentralized [03:40] *because [03:41] you don't, other than that the barrier to entry for lying about what your IP is, is pretty high [03:41] I mean, how do computers know who owns what IP? [03:42] that's what I don't get [03:42] because on my local subnet, I can just claim that I'm 192.168.0.21 for example, and that's what I am [03:42] how do you prevent people from doing that on the wide internet? [03:43] you literally don't [03:44] anyone can arbitrarily decide that they own, say, 1.3.3.7 and tell their peers that they own it. If the peers accept it, then for all intents and purposes, they do [03:45] now on the other hand, there's a few organisations that hand out these blocks of IPs (in a legal capacity, of sorts): ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, etc [03:49] *** cfarquhar has quit IRC (The Lounge - https://thelounge.chat) [03:50] *** cfarquhar has joined #archiveteam-ot [03:50] does anyone have anything for vxheaven [03:51] https://archive.org/details/vxheaven-windows-virus-collection [04:06] Smelly_ [04:06] See above [04:06] Wikipedia is not working for me...... Thank you! [16:25] How did you find it? [16:36] JAA: Oh, cool, np. I just did a search for 'aleph "public records"' and found this article that had a link to that blog post: https://ijnet.org/en/story/journalists-investigating-corruption-free-tool-offers-millions-searchable-documents Though, I was using google so maybe other search engines show different stuff... [16:52] Ah, need to add "journalists" to get that result on DuckDuckGo. [16:53] Also, I now just came across this web archival platform: https://aleph-archives.com/ [17:04] haha, I guess "public records" isn't a great keyword when searching. And me too! I like how their twitter account's last tweet calls themselves a "New Open Source replacement to the way back machine" .... :P (though I guess they mean more for legal/business stuff) [17:10] https://github.com/alepharchives?tab=repositories 1.7k repositories, WTF? [17:11] Pretty dead though since 6 years. [18:17] Just requested a few of my IA items get disabled, never thought I would have to do that. [18:23] What happened? [18:27] *** fuzzy8021 has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [18:32] JAA: So, about 1.5-2 years ago I archived some recordings that a student made of a teacher going on an inappropriate rant, which led to him being forced to resign. Then about 10 days ago IA emailed me saying that the teacher made a legal claim saying that the recording was made without his consent, and that they took it down as a precaution since they're not legal experts with that kind of stuff. There were three others that he [18:32] somehow didn't find, so I decided to ask that they be disabled as well since I don't want to get into potential legal trouble. [18:35] Ah. What state was this in? [18:35] Oregon [18:35] I was not the person that made the recording [18:36] Relevent laws: https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/165.540 [18:36] Specifically 1(c) [18:36] 6 is also relevant [18:37] in particular 6(c) [18:37] the orecording appears to be legal [18:37] yeah, I saw that. He claimed it was a concealed device though :/ [18:37] I'm not sure what is and isn't considered concealed though [18:37] yeah [18:38] I doubt the teacher could win that lawsuit [18:38] Even if he couldn't, I don't want to get into a lawsuit [18:38] understandable [18:38] can you send me the recordings, though? [18:38] I probably shouldn't :/ [18:39] One sec, I'll give you something else [18:39] ooh ok [18:41] Even if the recording is legal, there could still be copyright issues with distribution. [18:42] true, but the copyright would probably fall to whoever made the recording [18:42] I guess a recording would count as a derivative work of the speech, to which the teacher would hold the copyright. [18:42] (IANAL) [18:43] ealgase: still looking for it [18:43] ok, no hurry [18:43] Ah, I didn't think about that. I just assumed the copyright would be owned by the person that made the recording. [18:44] I'd think that the copyright would probably fall to the school [18:44] not the teacher [18:44] That's a whole other can of worms. [18:45] It kinda irritates me when people use stuff like copyright or specific laws to have embarrassing stuff about them removed. I'd prefer that they just say why they want it removed.
