Raccoon, depending on the content in question, sometimes inferior media is needed to backfill gaps in better media. Gaps due to a multitude of causes...corruption, damage, editing choices, etc..., |

the saving grace for datahoarders is that storage densities continue to increase. 512 GB microSD (165 mm^3) cards exist. Scale that up to a 2.5" drive (34925 mm^3) = 105 TB. Even if you lose 1/2 of that to controllers, space for cooling, etc, that's still 50 TB in a 2.5" form factor. |

part of price is operating costs (power), especially for online storage. Doesn't matter so much for cold storage. |

DNA even has built-in error correction. But sometimes errors happen and self-replicating cells propagate indefinitely (cancer). That bug needs fixing. |

I mean, DNA storage wouldn't involve cells at all. |

Cells or not, the error issues don't go away. Anyhow, I didn't realize they're actually working on using for storage. https://www.cnet.com/news/startup-packs-all-16gb-wikipedia-onto-dna-strands-demonstrate-new-storage-tech/ |

btw there's a technique called anamorphic where for a movie frame would be stretched to maximize storage/transmission resolution, then it should be unstretched during playback. it's mostly used in projection |
