I'm trying to come up with a naming convention for preserving computer software, but I'm not sure how to classify computer operating systems and programs. Should I use x86/x64, or would x86-32/x86-64 be more proper? What about those hybrid Mac applications that were PPC and Intel? [18:00] *** systwi_ is now known as systwi [18:01] What about 16-bit DOS software? [18:01] I checked the TOSEC naming convention and came up empty handed regarding this. [18:06] Another thing I'm confused on is, would IA-32 be more appropriate, or i386/i486/i586/i686? [18:11] https://twitter.com/TwitterDev/status/1255542774432063488 If anyone has a Twitter developer account, it sounds like you can have free access to a realtime stream of tweets related to COVID [18:29] systwi: combo of [operating system, architecture] would be a start, but there's also non-PC-compatibles which use DOS and 80x86 [18:29] say, the PC-98 [18:30] and if you want to get really finicky, software which is compiled for a specific class of CPUs above just "32-bit" [18:30] don't fall too deep into the rabbit hole. [18:31] depends on what your goals are. I just want to catalogue software in a standardized fashion. [19:32] The only thing I know about PC-98 is that it is an old computer :-/ I don't know much more past that [19:33] PC-98 is an x86-based computer architecture by NEC [19:33] that is wholly incompatible with an IBM PC at the BIOS and hardware level [19:33] but runs a modified version of DOS, so programs which stick strictly to INT 21h can and sometimes do work [19:34] Heh yeah now this is getting a bit confusing... [19:34] Which is why I asked about your goals [19:34] There is no one way to organize or catalogue things [19:35] Well, for now, I just have an assortment of 68k Macintosh software, PPC Macintosh software, Intel 32 and 64 bit software (both Mac and PC) and some 16 bit PC software (DOS/Win3 stuff)_ [19:37] I'd like to organize the data so that Macintosh software is in its own folder, with the software's required architecture appended to the title, and the same with IBM PC compatible software [19:38] For now, I'll keep PC-98 out of the mix, but I fear that when I do implement it, that will be more confusing. [19:39] And don't forget the other PC-incompatible x86 platforms! [19:41] Right, right, ughhhh [19:42] Is there a larger classifying group for PC-98 computers? [19:47] Well, PC-98 is the classification [19:47] there are just completely unrelated platforms [19:47] which are neither PC-98s nor fully IBM PCs [19:47] I see [19:48] Like the Pi or those SGI machines or that Pixar Image Computer [19:49] Not PC-compatible [19:50] Yeah this is quite a rabbit hole [19:53] *** DogsRNice has joined #archiveteam-ot [19:55] *** ShellyRol has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [19:55] *** ShellyRol has joined #archiveteam-ot [20:00] *** martini has joined #archiveteam-ot [20:06] *** martini has quit IRC (Quit: No Reasson) [21:27] *** dhyan_nat has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [21:33] *** ShellyRol has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [21:34] *** ShellyRol has joined #archiveteam-ot [21:53] *** ShellyRol has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 276 seconds) [21:54] *** ShellyRol has joined #archiveteam-ot [21:56] *** asdf0101 has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [22:02] *** ShellyRol has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [22:04] *** ShellyRol has joined #archiveteam-ot [22:23] *** asdf0101 has joined #archiveteam-ot [22:44] *** HP_Archiv has joined #archiveteam-ot [22:51] *** BlueMax has joined #archiveteam-ot [23:18] *** HP_Archiv has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving) [23:36] *** ShellyRol has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 496 seconds) [23:51] *** ShellyRol has joined #archiveteam-ot
