17:49 🔗 Ryz More reasons to not use TikTok? Here they are: https://twitter.com/d1rtydan/status/1277081198624337920
17:51 🔗 Raccoon on a similar vein, a whole heap of politicians (especially in the UK and europe) are abandoning Twitter and Facebook and now post exclusively on the new platform Parler.
17:51 🔗 Raccoon it's probably worth grabbing a good parler @name right about now, before Trump announces the same
18:02 🔗 ats has quit IRC (Quit: Lost terminal)

19:53 🔗 Frogging Ryz: Chinese social media hellware is cancer
19:54 🔗 schbirid US social media hellware is cancer
19:55 🔗 Frogging can't argue with that either
19:55 🔗 Frogging I think chinese apps are worse because of the government's involvement, but yeah, I won't say Facebook et al are perfect either
20:00 🔗 schbirid you are right, there is zero involvement of the US government in US apps

20:56 🔗 peroquena has joined #archiveteam-ot
21:35 🔗 Frogging not sure if schbirid was being sarcastic, but yes I will argue that the US government's spying on social media is not in the same league as China's iron grip on all major business entities and activities within their sphere of influence
21:37 🔗 Frogging pardon my buzzwording, but I think that's some irrelevant "whataboutism"
21:38 🔗 Frogging criticism of TikTok ≠ endorsement of Facebook
22:25 🔗 Gfy_ is now known as Gfy
22:51 🔗 Raccoon Don't Google and Apple actively monitor and ban invasive apps that violate privacy?
22:52 🔗 JAA The app stores would be nearly empty if they did.
22:52 🔗 Raccoon huh.
22:53 🔗 kiska Its called a "privacy policy"
22:54 🔗 kiska Also yes if they did get rid of invasive apps, then the app store would be empty and only paid stuff would exist
22:54 🔗 Raccoon they got rid of Contact Scraping and that didn't kill off mobile apps
22:54 🔗 JAA Yup, 95+ % of the free apps only exist to collect data on you. If not directly, then indirectly via ads.
22:55 🔗 Raccoon Used to be if you installed an app, you and all your friends would get phone calls from happy salesmen
22:55 🔗 Raccoon or scammers
22:55 🔗 kiska Still happens occasionally :D
22:55 🔗 * JAA looks at WhatsApp transferring the entire contact list to the servers.
22:55 🔗 JAA Yup, they totally got rid of all that stuff.
22:56 🔗 * kiska looks at twitter transferring my contact list to their servers
22:56 🔗 Raccoon I don't mind multi billion dollar corporations requesting permission to access particular features like contact management, for meaningful purposes.
22:57 🔗 JAA I do mind, because it means they have a lot of information on me even though I never consented to them having it (because other people have it and use those services).
22:57 🔗 Raccoon It's the people who write apps when they're piled 20 people to a tiny apartment looking to get rich on the few dullards that cross their path
22:58 🔗 Raccoon at least on the android platform, you have to affirm "let this app access your contacts?"
22:58 🔗 Raccoon i think that permission request should cost app makers $100,000
22:59 🔗 kiska Then we would have a store with only the big guys :D
22:59 🔗 Raccoon neato
22:59 🔗 kiska ie Facebook, twitter, instagram, tiktok, etc
22:59 🔗 Raccoon big guys can pay lawsuit settlements
22:59 🔗 JAA Yeah, fuck that.
22:59 🔗 Raccoon random people from the far east don't show up to court summonses
22:59 🔗 JAA No open source apps ever again, basically.
22:59 🔗 kiska Small indie devs would be wiped out
23:00 🔗 kiska University apps would no longer exist, unless we side load
23:00 🔗 Raccoon university?
23:00 🔗 Raccoon what do college students need with your contact list?
23:00 🔗 kiska Did you know that the Western Sydney University app has emergency contacts in case of an emergency while on campus
23:01 🔗 Raccoon doesn't need to access your contact list
23:02 🔗 JAA What about all the other permissions? Location, for example?
23:02 🔗 Raccoon at least those permissions screw yourself over.
23:02 🔗 kiska It uses an API don't remember what its called but Google has one for emergency contact synchronisation between devices
23:03 🔗 JAA Also, just because an app accesses the contact list doesn't mean it does anything nefarious with it.
23:03 🔗 Raccoon i don't want my bratty cousins installing Pony Crush and selling my contact so they can get 300 free Pony Bucks
23:04 🔗 JAA E.g. a calendar app where you can mark which of your contacts are also at an event.
23:04 🔗 kiska https://server8.kiska.pw/uploads/76dd77339a1f4591/Screenshot_20200630-090343_Contacts.jpg
23:04 🔗 kiska I do like having an emergency responder able to know what medical conditions I have
23:04 🔗 Raccoon kiska: Tell your university to Pony up $100,000 those cheap asses
23:05 🔗 Raccoon legal retainer bond
23:05 🔗 JAA kiska: Why does that need to be in a special app though? Android already has an emergency information thing, and I bet so does iOS...
23:06 🔗 NickN00b has quit IRC (Leaving.)
23:07 🔗 kiska Use to be not there :D
23:07 🔗 kiska Was only added circa Android 6
23:07 🔗 kiska And this particular version didn't sync with my file on Google's servers, cause its a Samsung phone
23:08 🔗 JAA Huh, 7 even
23:08 🔗 Raccoon Speaking of Location apps, what ever happened to Four Square or w/e it was called. Is that still a thing?
23:08 🔗 kiska What about my Home Doctor booking app?
23:08 🔗 Raccoon I think it gave you sonar alerts if a friend was within walking distance
23:08 🔗 kiska They don't have infinite money cause they are a sole trader
23:09 🔗 Raccoon Why does your home doctor need your kid brother's contact info?
23:09 🔗 Raccoon is he some sort of creapo?
23:09 🔗 kiska Family conditions, emergency contact
23:09 🔗 kiska I have my sister down as a emergency contact
23:09 🔗 Raccoon you can type that info down, so they don't get mistaken / old info and you die a tragic lonely death.
23:09 🔗 kiska I have had an asthma attack while a doctor was attending
23:10 🔗 Raccoon it's only 11 digits
23:10 🔗 kiska And before Android 7, what happens if someone finds me on a side walk unconscious, and calls an ambulance?
23:11 🔗 kiska There used to be apps that would do what Android 7+ does now
23:11 🔗 Raccoon again, that never needed anything to do with your Contacts book
23:11 🔗 Raccoon you hand typed those numbers into the app yourself, el manual
23:11 🔗 kiska Nope just typed my sisters name :D
23:12 🔗 Raccoon they get sent to the Dialer app, which is a different permission from Contacts, and always has been
23:13 🔗 peroquena has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
23:15 🔗 Raccoon also. Your doctor can honestly eff himself as long as Pony Crush is tricking bratty cousins into releasing my contact info to randos in third-world countries.
23:15 🔗 Arcorann has joined #archiveteam-ot
23:17 🔗 kiska Fun both my banking apps have contacts as a permission :D
23:17 🔗 kiska banking apps I use*
23:18 🔗 JAA I'll never understand why so many people do that. It's horribly insecure, especially since many people also don't install updates in a timely manner (or even at all).
23:18 🔗 Raccoon Don't miss a payment or they might harass your family to collect
23:18 🔗 kiska Or not get any updates from the manufacturer :D
23:19 🔗 JAA Yeah, and that.
23:19 🔗 kiska My Samsung is still stuck on Android 9 :D
23:19 🔗 Frogging my blackberry is still on android 6
23:19 🔗 Raccoon If your device is >2 years old, it most likely won't receive any OTA updates. Samsung, for instance, simply does not write the hardware drivers for newer versions of android for older devices.
23:20 🔗 kiska I know :D
23:20 🔗 Raccoon Guess which play phones and tablets the young cousins get hand-me-down.
23:21 🔗 kiska I also guess I am very open too, alot of people in this channel and on other mediums know I am gay
23:21 🔗 Arcorann Next time I get a phone I plan to install a custom ROM straight away without even bothering to initialise the installed system
23:21 🔗 JAA Yet everyone keeps buying these devices, still knowing they'll be unsupported just 2 years later.
23:22 🔗 kiska Yep and since I am still in contract with a loan device, I can't do that :D
23:22 🔗 kiska There wasn't that many options here when I signed the contract 2 years ago
23:22 🔗 kiska And I am locked in for 3 years :D
23:22 🔗 JAA F
23:25 🔗 kiska I also guess I am quite desensitised by https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/about-us/our-portfolios/national-security/lawful-access-telecommunications/data-encryption
23:26 🔗 JAA Ah yes, that bullshit.
23:27 🔗 kiska I got a response back from that department with (paraphrased) "if you don't want us spying and other people spying, then don't own/use a device connected to the internet"
23:29 🔗 kiska Also "Foursquare - The Trusted Location Data & Intelligence Company" :D
23:29 🔗 kiska So yes Foursquare does still exist D:
23:31 🔗 kiska I guess Google can find where I live, if they already don't know it https://server8.kiska.pw/uploads/228e2dc0a80e145e/image.png
23:33 🔗 NickN00b has joined #archiveteam-ot
23:33 🔗 kiska I guess thins is the find kiska challenge xD
23:34 🔗 kiska s/thins/this
23:43 🔗 Frogging JAA: Which devices have actual long-term support?
23:44 🔗 kiska None? Maybe the pixel line
23:44 🔗 Frogging in response to "everyone keeps buying these devices, still knowing they'll be unsupported just 2 years later"
23:46 🔗 Frogging If there's a line of devices for which this is not the case, I'm interested :p
23:49 🔗 JAA Frogging: Fairphone has done a decent job. The FP2 was released in Dec 2015 and is still supported.
23:49 🔗 Frogging ah, nice
23:50 🔗 JAA No newer Android version, but still getting security fixes etc.
23:50 🔗 Frogging that's good
23:51 🔗 Frogging unfortunately it looks like they're
23:52 🔗 Frogging Europe only
23:56 🔗 Frogging phones are pretty disappointing in general. such a closed and opaque ecosystem
23:57 🔗 Frogging I feel like any flexibility android offers for power users is only a stopgap until they find a way to abstract it away
