17:24 🔗 VoynichCr if a programmer writes a bot, and he dies, but the bot still is running for over 1 year, do you think, in some way, that the programmer has extended his life 1 year?
17:25 🔗 VoynichCr how about if the bot is running 5 years later?
17:26 🔗 VoynichCr it's different to write a book, and your thoughts are "teleported" to centuries later when something read your book
17:27 🔗 VoynichCr you can code the bot to interact with a world where you aren't anymore
17:27 🔗 JAA I don't know who first said the quote about dying twice, but I guess it would be appropriate to extend it here: you die three times; once when your heart/brain stops, once when the things you did in your lifetime stop working, and finally when someone thinks of you for the last time.
17:28 🔗 VoynichCr yeah somehow
17:31 🔗 VoynichCr somebody could create a place where this kind of bots run, and are maintained, etc
17:35 🔗 JAA But if someone else maintains it, does the original creator still really live on in that sense?
17:37 🔗 VoynichCr maintained as in keeping the bot running (paying the server bills, updating the Python version or whatever, etc)
17:38 🔗 JAA Yeah, but then eventually things break on the Python upgrades, so the code needs to be modified slightly, etc.
17:38 🔗 JAA At what point does the original creator die?
17:38 🔗 VoynichCr well, that's philosophy... :p
17:39 🔗 JAA I mean, the entire discussion is. :-P
17:40 🔗 VoynichCr he dies when the bot stops running, and resucitates if somebody re-launch the bot
17:41 🔗 VoynichCr but what i am trying to say, it's that you can interact with this world even after you die, if you code the bot skillfully
17:41 🔗 VoynichCr it can manage your social networks, your wikipedia account, your email...
17:44 🔗 VoynichCr for example, simple things: you can code a message for your relatives in their birthdays, christmas, etc
17:46 🔗 VoynichCr though, that can affect them psychologically
17:47 🔗 VoynichCr it depends on the person
17:52 🔗 VoynichCr would you like to receive, read and reply to messages coded from dead relatives?
17:52 🔗 VoynichCr coded by*
17:55 🔗 Jake4 Personally, I'd find that to be quite disconcerting.
18:00 🔗 VoynichCr it is, we do it in some way when we read old letters or look at a pic, but this way it would be more real
18:01 🔗 VoynichCr you can talk to him/her when you need, and forget about it for long periods
18:04 🔗 Jake4 But this would hypothetically be entirely unprompted, yeah?
18:04 🔗 Jake4 If I read a letter or look at a picture, it's most likely intentional, getting a message out of the blue from someone's old bot?
18:04 🔗 Jake4 Very different in my eyes.
18:05 🔗 VoynichCr Yeah, but you can find your old letters accidentally too
18:05 🔗 VoynichCr The bot could have an opt-out option
18:05 🔗 VoynichCr etc etc
18:06 🔗 VoynichCr you still can filter Uncle Joe bot emails to spam, if you want of course
18:14 🔗 Aoede there was this service which would send a message to future you
18:15 🔗 Aoede i wonder if it's still up
18:17 🔗 Aoede futureme.org? can't remember
18:27 🔗 VoynichCr yeah, and you can schedule tweets now on twitter, until 2022
18:31 🔗 Mateon1 has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
18:31 🔗 Mateon1 has joined #archiveteam-ot
18:40 🔗 JAA Aoede: Yeah, something like that still exists, saw it mentioned somewhere recently.
18:41 🔗 VoynichCr i think that is a very primitive mind-uploading, you type some thoughts and schedule them
18:57 🔗 Aoede yeah that's definitively the one. I remember using it
