22:31 🔗 w0rmhole JAA: does the whole "leaking new movies" thing apply to private trackers? and can OVH see your stuff on there? (i assume they do, and sorry for the 20 q's)
22:31 🔗 w0rmhole asking because im part of a private tracker which does just that, and trying to seed ~80GB blu ray copies of movies on my terrible internet is suicidal
22:32 🔗 JAA w0rmhole: If you upload high-profile content as the first person, you'll get attention no matter where you are. They will track you down eventually most likely.
22:33 🔗 JAA If you only download and then seed the content, that's not likely to cause any issues unless OVH suddenly changes their policies.
22:34 🔗 JAA They make a lot of money from either people renting servers as seedboxes or from seedbox resellers (like Feral and so on), so it's in their best interest to not do anything about it basically.
22:34 🔗 JAA They'll comply with legal requests though.
22:35 🔗 w0rmhole ok cool downloading and then seeding is what i was going to do anyway. i might (very unlikely) upload some files to there and seed them, but they most likely wouldn't be movies or anything like that. if i did, it would probably just be some old DOS software or something like that
22:35 🔗 JAA Regarding OVH seeing your stuff, well, that's a complex question. By default, OVH has access to your server; they install an SSH key on the root account for monitoring and support purposes, but it could obviously be used for anything else as well.
22:36 🔗 JAA They operate the network, so they can always observe all your traffic. Lots of torrent traffic are unencrypted, and even when encryption is in use, identification may be possible.
22:37 🔗 JAA They'll also see your announce requests, and if the tracker doesn't use HTTPS for those, they'll even be able to tell which torrents you have in your client, how much you've downloaded and uploaded on them, etc.
22:38 🔗 JAA Whether they *do* that is a completely different question. As mentioned above, they have good reason to just ignore the torrenting until law enforcement comes knocking.
22:39 🔗 w0rmhole so you said OVH are known for not really caring about people seeding/downloading pi**ted stuff on their [virtual private] servers, right? i.e. i would have nothing to worry about provided i use it with private trackers. now on the off chance they do get a dmca claim i'd be f****d, right?
22:39 🔗 w0rmhole sorry that beginning was typed way before you said everything else
22:40 🔗 w0rmhole i just want to be safe, since i've already been busted once in the past (on my home network and with no vpn)
22:41 🔗 JAA Yeah, I don't think you need to worry too much about that. But if you want to be safe, you can always order through a reseller which lets you order and pay "anonymously". (Actually staying anonymous is obviously quite difficult.)
22:42 🔗 w0rmhole i.e. feralhosting?
22:44 🔗 JAA I was thinking of services where you actually get an OVH machine, but that's more relevant if you need a dedicated server. Yeah, a seedbox provider would probably work for that. No idea what Feral specifically requires/how you can pay.
22:44 🔗 w0rmhole ok thanks for the information
22:45 🔗 w0rmhole so, just so i understand this correctly, in my situation (where i mainly intend on using this as a seedbox w/ private trackers), you would recommend i go through OVH or an OVH reseller?
22:47 🔗 JAA I'd probably go with a seedbox provider in your case.
22:48 🔗 JAA (By the way, Feral doesn't use OVH machines, I think. Some smaller seedbox providers certainly do though.)
22:59 🔗 w0rmhole ok thanks
23:02 🔗 w0rmhole JAA: so with your VPS, are you able to do clonezilla backups or any kind of disk image of your server's contents in case your account/their servers get pulled, or drives fail on their part, or some other reason that would warrant you losing your stuff up there?
23:02 🔗 w0rmhole *cause, not warrant
23:02 🔗 w0rmhole my mistake, english isn't my best
23:04 🔗 Flashfire W0rmhole ask kiska about their lounge server
23:04 🔗 w0rmhole kiska: i hear you have a louge server?
23:05 🔗 w0rmhole *lounge
23:06 🔗 JAA w0rmhole: I'm not sure since I don't usually run image-based backups (only file-based ones, the most trivial of which you can do with rsync or scp). It depends on the setup for sure. If you use LVM or a snapshotting-capable file system (e.g. ZFS, btrfs), then that should work. But yeah, no experience with it.
23:07 🔗 w0rmhole oh, ok. thanks
23:09 🔗 JAA w0rmhole: Also, with VPS, you typically get KVM access. You can reboot your machine into that completely independent system (sometimes called "rescue" because it allows you to recover from issues such as boot problems or network misconfigurations). From there, you could definitely grab a disk image.
23:12 🔗 kiska hrm? w0rmhole?
23:14 🔗 w0rmhole JAA: oh that's cool. so in that case it would kind of be like sitting in front of virtualbox's vm manager
23:14 🔗 w0rmhole kiska: idk flashfire suggested i ask about your lounge
23:14 🔗 Flashfire Shhh dont rope me back into this
23:14 🔗 w0rmhole kiska: and my apologies for not conversing with you sooner, i got really busy moving and didnt have time to hop on
23:15 🔗 w0rmhole sorry flash
23:15 🔗 kiska Sorry catching up
23:15 🔗 kiska Give me 2 secs
23:15 🔗 w0rmhole sure
23:17 🔗 kiska Alright I am done catching up on 200+ messages, do you just need a persistent connection like flashfire?
23:18 🔗 astrid Flashfire desperately needs a persistent connection
23:18 🔗 Flashfire Yes I have that now lol
23:18 🔗 kiska lol astrid
23:18 🔗 JAA w0rmhole: In case you have no idea what this is about (which I assume), The Lounge is an IRC client with a web interface that lets you stay online constantly, use the client from different devices, etc.
23:19 🔗 JAA Flashfire: If only you remembered the server name... :-P
23:19 🔗 kiska astrid you'll notice if you do a whois on my name and flashfire its the same IP
23:19 🔗 kiska JAA lol xD
23:19 🔗 Flashfire bahahaha that was trying to connect on my gimped ipod
23:20 🔗 w0rmhole yes my internet connection drops about every 20 minutes.
23:20 🔗 w0rmhole and i didnt know about the louge. im still very new to irc things
23:20 🔗 kiska Well lets move this to a PM so I can give you authentication details

23:42 🔗 kiska From my webirc server :)
23:42 🔗 w0rmhole hi kiska! :D
23:42 🔗 kiska Anyway now if you close your browser and reopen the tab, you'll find that the messages you sent before still exist
23:43 🔗 kiska And your connection isn't lost
23:43 🔗 Flashfire if kiska doesnt run out of space and delete old messages
23:43 🔗 kiska Shouldn't for a long time
23:43 🔗 w0rmhole that's awesome, thank you very much!

23:45 🔗 w0rmhole ahh i wish `tubeup' would stop messing up o_o
23:46 🔗 w0rmhole kiska: is this hosted locally?
23:46 🔗 kiska I am hosting this on a vps somewhere
23:46 🔗 kiska xD
23:47 🔗 w0rmhole oh nice
23:48 🔗 ta9le has quit IRC (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
23:49 🔗 w0rmhole JAA: (or anyone really) do you know if archivebot (or any other tool) has a magnet link counterpart? i.e. paste a magnet link in and it is preserved somewhere?
23:53 🔗 JAA w0rmhole: I don't know of such a tool. Someone mentioned the idea of archiving the entire DHT a while ago in -bs, but I don't think that ever happened.
23:54 🔗 w0rmhole dang. it would be really handy. there's one public tracker in particular (idk if im allowed to link to it/name it here) that new torrents are added to it every day, and within like the next five days they usually have 0 seeders
23:56 🔗 JAA If you can get a .torrent file, you can upload that to IA and it'll grab the content. But be careful with what you use that for.
23:56 🔗 JAA I don't think it supports magnet links though.
23:56 🔗 w0rmhole what's IA?
23:56 🔗 w0rmhole internet archive?
23:56 🔗 JAA Yes
23:56 🔗 Flashfire Internet archive
23:56 🔗 w0rmhole oh sorry i misread it; i read it as "upload to that IA"
23:57 🔗 w0rmhole cool i didnt know they did that i'll check it out
23:57 🔗 w0rmhole the only downside is its internet archive. not that that's a bad thing, but they don't like pir**ed things
23:58 🔗 Flashfire They will turn a blind eye to a movie that was found on a VHS tape no one has heard of
23:58 🔗 JAA Yes, that's exactly what I meant by "be careful with what you use that for".
23:58 🔗 Flashfire They just dont want you uploading infinity war
23:59 🔗 w0rmhole lol oh i know, the site in particular is about mac programmes/games
23:59 🔗 w0rmhole modern
23:59 🔗 w0rmhole so probably a no
23:59 🔗 Flashfire Depends how modern
