02:12 🔗 JAA Impressive that Mozilla hasn't managed to find a proper solution for their addons problem yet. You'd think they pay more attention to things that can break their entire ecosystem.
02:13 🔗 JAA (When I say "proper", I mean *not* "enable studies, send us all your data, and hope that you'll get the fix sometime soonish maybe"...)

12:39 🔗 JAA If anyone still has Firefox addon woes: https://storage.googleapis.com/moz-fx-normandy-prod-addons/extensions/hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate%40mozilla.com-1.0.2-signed.xpi should fix it. That's what's distributed through the studies, and you can install it without enabling studies.
12:41 🔗 JAA It simply adds a new intermediate certificate and forces a verification of the installed addons.
13:46 🔗 martinlig does it works also with tor?

17:26 🔗 t3 ATrescue: I really don't want Google's web browser dominance upset the balance of the openness of the web and its standards.
17:27 🔗 t3 They're already pushing things in their favor. 5e sad thing is that people don't realize it.
17:27 🔗 t3 People use Google Chrome without considering alternatives.
17:28 🔗 ATrescue t3: Me too.
17:28 🔗 ATrescue t3: I know, right. They own the surface web.
17:29 🔗 t3 I don't agree with Mozilla's direction anymore. I suppose many employees left Mozilla for the same reason.
17:29 🔗 ATrescue t3: Especially Firefox Quantum. What a misstep.
17:29 🔗 ATrescue t3: If Quantum is really that secure, why not disable the Internet altogether?!
17:30 🔗 t3 I think Quantum had some positives.
17:30 🔗 ATrescue t3: Yes, Quantum is faster and had some new features. But legacy addons farewell.
17:30 🔗 t3 Right.
17:30 🔗 ATrescue t3: Opera did this with version 15.
17:34 🔗 t3 I'm more considered about how Google's dominance will hurt things rather than Firefox's legacy add-ons.
17:34 🔗 t3 concerned*
17:36 🔗 ATrescue t3: Agreed. But Mozilla really didn't have to mess up this bad.
17:38 🔗 Zerote has joined #archiveteam-ot
17:39 🔗 t3 All I want is a browser that is fast and reliable. I just want it to have no user tracking, and to mitigate trackers, and would comprehensively block annoying ads.
17:40 🔗 ATrescue t3: ...and a browser where someone can remotely cripple it (Addon Scandal) is certainly not reliable.
17:41 🔗 t3 Right. A browser that is not crippled in any way.
17:41 🔗 t3 I honestly think JavaScript is unnecessarily powerful.
17:42 🔗 t3 It's the source of most of the security issues.
17:45 🔗 ATrescue t3: Modern websites rely on it extensively.
17:49 🔗 ATrescue I am now leaving the browser. Chat will likely close in background. If there is anything to tell me, https://archiveteam.org/index.php/User_Talk:ATrescue
17:50 🔗 ATrescue has quit IRC (Quit: Page closed)
18:01 🔗 JAA Dropping legacy addon support was necessary and fine. Not planning it properly and introducing the necessary APIs in time wasn't. There are many addons, including a bunch of very popular ones, that are still unportable to WebExtensions, e.g. many cookie manipulation tools.

23:38 🔗 JAA Figured out how to re-enable addons on Firefox 52 and up. The hotfix .xpi Mozilla released doesn't work there because an API is missing. Not sure from which version it does work.
23:39 🔗 JAA What their hotfix does is simply add a particular certificate to the trust store explicitly. That way, the expired intermediate cert doesn't matter. Or at least that's how I understand it.
23:40 🔗 JAA Of course, you can add that certificate manually as well. Here it is: https://transfer.notkiska.pw/YnCpg/signingca1addonsmozillaorg.crt (You can find it in the hotfix XPI linked earlier in the file experiments/skeleton/api.js.)
23:40 🔗 JAA No need to explicitly trust anything, it seems.
23:41 🔗 JAA To force Firefox to revalidate the addons, you can set app.update.lastUpdateTime.xpi-signature-verification on about:config to a value a few days in the past (anything above 24 hours should do I think; the value's in seconds, so just decrease one of the first few digits by one) and restart Firefox.
23:44 🔗 JAA I wonder if the "no need to explicitly trust anything" thing means that any CA in the world could in principle sign addons and have them accepted by Firefox.
