00:17 🔗 JAA I saw in a documentary something about a tool called "Aleph". In that doc, it was used for indexing and finding public records which are not searcheable on the relevant government websites. Apparently it's by Belgian researchers or journalists. Does anyone know more? I can't find anything about it...
00:26 🔗 smelly_ you know, i know some people who work at Lexis Nexis
00:26 🔗 smelly_ aka a giant data company
00:26 🔗 smelly_ I wonder what they use

02:57 🔗 ealgase you know what's weird
02:57 🔗 ealgase I still don't understand how the internet fundamentally works
02:57 🔗 ealgase like I understand DNS and stuff
02:57 🔗 ealgase but like
02:57 🔗 ealgase how TF does IP work?
02:57 🔗 ealgase it makes no sense
03:33 🔗 Kaz it does once you understand it, to be fair
03:33 🔗 Kaz much like many things in life
03:40 🔗 ealgase hmm ok
03:40 🔗 ealgase my main not-understanding is
03:40 🔗 ealgase how do you prevent a computer from lying about what their IP is?
03:40 🔗 ealgase beceause from everything I've heard, IP is decentralized
03:40 🔗 ealgase *because
03:41 🔗 Kaz you don't, other than that the barrier to entry for lying about what your IP is, is pretty high
03:41 🔗 ealgase I mean, how do computers know who owns what IP?
03:42 🔗 ealgase that's what I don't get
03:42 🔗 ealgase because on my local subnet, I can just claim that I'm 192.168.0.21 for example, and that's what I am
03:42 🔗 ealgase how do you prevent people from doing that on the wide internet?
03:43 🔗 Kaz you literally don't
03:44 🔗 Kaz anyone can arbitrarily decide that they own, say, 1.3.3.7 and tell their peers that they own it. If the peers accept it, then for all intents and purposes, they do
03:45 🔗 Kaz now on the other hand, there's a few organisations that hand out these blocks of IPs (in a legal capacity, of sorts): ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, etc

16:13 🔗 a_spook_ JAA: I just did a quick search out of idle curiosity so dunno if helpful, but this sounds like that Aleph?: http://pudo.org/blog/2016/06/29/aleph.html
16:13 🔗 a_spook_ https://github.com/alephdata/aleph
16:24 🔗 JAA a_spook_: Yes, it is! Thank you!
16:25 🔗 JAA How did you find it?
16:36 🔗 a_spook_ JAA: Oh, cool, np. I just did a search for 'aleph "public records"' and found this article that had a link to that blog post: https://ijnet.org/en/story/journalists-investigating-corruption-free-tool-offers-millions-searchable-documents Though, I was using google so maybe other search engines show different stuff...
16:52 🔗 JAA Ah, need to add "journalists" to get that result on DuckDuckGo.
16:53 🔗 JAA Also, I now just came across this web archival platform: https://aleph-archives.com/
17:04 🔗 a_spook_ haha, I guess "public records" isn't a great keyword when searching. And me too! I like how their twitter account's last tweet calls themselves a "New Open Source replacement to the way back machine" .... :P (though I guess they mean more for legal/business stuff)
17:10 🔗 JAA https://github.com/alepharchives?tab=repositories 1.7k repositories, WTF?
17:11 🔗 JAA Pretty dead though since 6 years.
18:17 🔗 hook54321 Just requested a few of my IA items get disabled, never thought I would have to do that.
18:23 🔗 JAA What happened?
18:27 🔗 fuzzy8021 has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out)
18:32 🔗 hook54321 JAA: So, about 1.5-2 years ago I archived some recordings that a student made of a teacher going on an inappropriate rant, which led to him being forced to resign. Then about 10 days ago IA emailed me saying that the teacher made a legal claim saying that the recording was made without his consent, and that they took it down as a precaution since they're not legal experts with that kind of stuff. There were three others that he
18:32 🔗 hook54321 somehow didn't find, so I decided to ask that they be disabled as well since I don't want to get into potential legal trouble.
18:35 🔗 ealgase Ah. What state was this in?
18:35 🔗 hook54321 Oregon
18:35 🔗 hook54321 I was not the person that made the recording
18:36 🔗 hook54321 Relevent laws: https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/165.540
18:36 🔗 hook54321 Specifically 1(c)
18:36 🔗 ealgase 6 is also relevant
18:37 🔗 ealgase in particular 6(c)
18:37 🔗 ealgase the orecording appears to be legal
18:37 🔗 hook54321 yeah, I saw that. He claimed it was a concealed device though :/
18:37 🔗 hook54321 I'm not sure what is and isn't considered concealed though
18:37 🔗 ealgase yeah
18:38 🔗 ealgase I doubt the teacher could win that lawsuit
18:38 🔗 hook54321 Even if he couldn't, I don't want to get into a lawsuit
18:38 🔗 ealgase understandable
18:38 🔗 ealgase can you send me the recordings, though?
18:38 🔗 hook54321 I probably shouldn't :/
18:39 🔗 hook54321 One sec, I'll give you something else
18:39 🔗 ealgase ooh ok
18:41 🔗 JAA Even if the recording is legal, there could still be copyright issues with distribution.
18:42 🔗 ealgase true, but the copyright would probably fall to whoever made the recording
18:42 🔗 JAA I guess a recording would count as a derivative work of the speech, to which the teacher would hold the copyright.
18:42 🔗 JAA (IANAL)
18:43 🔗 hook54321 ealgase: still looking for it
18:43 🔗 ealgase ok, no hurry
18:43 🔗 hook54321 Ah, I didn't think about that. I just assumed the copyright would be owned by the person that made the recording.
18:44 🔗 ealgase I'd think that the copyright would probably fall to the school
18:44 🔗 ealgase not the teacher
18:44 🔗 JAA That's a whole other can of worms.
18:45 🔗 hook54321 It kinda irritates me when people use stuff like copyright or specific laws to have embarrassing stuff about them removed. I'd prefer that they just say why they want it removed.
