08:05 🔗 phillipsj Letme guess: python-2.7.11-x86_64-2.txz != python3
08:07 🔗 Igloo python-2.7.11 == python 2.7.11
08:07 🔗 Igloo :p
08:08 🔗 phillipsj https://www.python.org/download/releases/3.0/ Not compatible, released over 10 years ago.
08:19 🔗 phillipsj comming from Debian, they generally advise against compiling random packages due to the high chance of breaking your system. (I think I will use the ``make altinstall`` option.)
08:30 🔗 dhyan_nat has quit IRC (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
08:30 🔗 phillipsj make seems to be only using one CPU :/
08:33 🔗 * phillipsj tries make -j 4
08:33 🔗 phillipsj seems to have more than doubled the compile speed.
08:34 🔗 * phillipsj goes to summon the dish cleaning fairy.

08:44 🔗 JAA phillipsj: What do you mean regarding Python 2/3? You can have both installed in parallel, even minor versions.
08:54 🔗 phillipsj Slackware does not appear to have a pre-compiled pyhthon3 package.
08:56 🔗 JAA Ah
08:56 🔗 JAA By the way, if you need many different Python versions: pyenv
08:56 🔗 phillipsj I am worried one may clobber the other if I am not carefull.
08:57 🔗 deevious has quit IRC (Quit: deevious)
09:01 🔗 phillipsj Not even suire I need the alternate install option for major versions.
09:02 🔗 phillipsj *sure
09:04 🔗 JAA No idea about that. I don't think I've ever manually compiled Python from source, only through pyenv.
09:06 🔗 godane has quit IRC (Leaving.)
09:09 🔗 Raccoon has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
09:12 🔗 phillipsj The readme file says it will be installed a python3, then immeditely contradicts itself.
09:15 🔗 phillipsj "This will install Python as ``python3``. ... the executable is called ... just ``python``."
09:18 🔗 phillipsj OK, the way I did it I have to invoke pip3.7 instead of pip-3
09:21 🔗 phillipsj and python is python3.7

21:28 🔗 Igloo Meh. SATA
21:29 🔗 JAA Yeah, spinning rust is fine, but there's not enough spinning rust in that machine to make it worthwhile for AT needs.
21:30 🔗 JAA But the SSD one is awesome.
21:30 🔗 Igloo Indeed :)

22:37 🔗 * phillipsj kind of still likes spinning rust.
22:39 🔗 JAA For the right application, absolutely!
22:41 🔗 phillipsj I got my disk array with 15k SAS drives because it was cheaper than an equivavlent SSD. Was a little worried about noise, but they are quieter than some of the 7200RPM drives I have.
22:42 🔗 phillipsj I figure ram can compensate for low IOPS to a certain extent.
22:46 🔗 phillipsj But yeah, if your work-load never lets up, there is no substitue for an SSD.
23:02 🔗 * phillipsj moves a 2GB iso over to burn a Linux DVD. (cdrecord was locking up the machine and required a restart when I tried it on this machine)
23:03 🔗 JAA What is that, a "DVD"? ;-)
23:03 🔗 JAA I don't even remember when I last installed an OS from a disc.
23:04 🔗 phillipsj A write-only medium ;)
23:05 🔗 phillipsj ..wait, that came out wrong
23:07 🔗 phillipsj But I have been using live DVDs instead of functional computers for over a year now. Hope to make a functional computer.
23:08 🔗 kpcyrd HDDs are just very thick DVDs
23:09 🔗 JAA Why not USB thumb drives though?
23:09 🔗 JAA Reusable, faster, etc.
23:12 🔗 phillipsj USB drives are faster for reads, but not writes.
23:15 🔗 phillipsj Oh, you mean isntead of DVDs? No chance of accidentally overwriting imnportant files or filesystem data.
23:16 🔗 JAA Yeah, I meant instead of DVDs.
23:16 🔗 JAA And well, that's what backups are for. :-)
23:17 🔗 phillipsj I messed up a FreeBSD upgrade by clobbering the filesystem when mounting my backup (not sure the filesystem was actually damaged ).
23:18 🔗 phillipsj I tried to do an upgrade and drive replacement at the sametime.
23:18 🔗 JAA That's what the offsite and offline backup is for. :-P
23:19 🔗 phillipsj JAA I have plans for one. Even have a suitable machine (my "white elephant" computer that I can't afford to run)
23:19 🔗 JAA Hey, same. :-)
23:20 🔗 JAA I've had plans for one for years.
23:20 🔗 JAA Unfortunately, they're still only plans.
23:20 🔗 phillipsj I have plans to encrypt the data in transit with the back-up server's public key.
23:22 🔗 phillipsj Then store the decryption passphrase away from that server in more than one location (so I am up to 3 locations).
23:23 🔗 phillipsj Worried I am over-thinkig it a bit. If I can track the keys, it should work even if one of 3 locations are destroyed.
23:31 🔗 coderobe has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
23:32 🔗 ivan_ you can write to the Samsung MUF flash drives at 60MB/s
23:34 🔗 phillipsj When I was doing back-of the envelope calculations for data by carrier pigeon about 10 years ago, most were limited to 5 or 10MB/s
23:36 🔗 phillipsj I was thinking I could get closer to 50MB/s (USB 2.0 supports ~ 400Mbps), but no. Most cheap drives would have been a major bottleneck.
23:36 🔗 JAA SanDisk makes some that reach around 400 MB/s I believe.
23:37 🔗 JAA With USB 3, obviously.
23:37 🔗 phillipsj Probably bulkier than your average USB stick as well.
23:37 🔗 JAA They're called Extreme Pro. And no, fairly standard size.
23:38 🔗 JAA I mean, not sure what the average size is.
23:38 🔗 phillipsj Although the NVME drive I installed in my dad's coputer was about that size.
23:39 🔗 phillipsj I also concluded I did not want to tend pigeons: the postal service is more practical.
23:41 🔗 JAA That's exactly why I use flash drives. :-)
23:41 🔗 phillipsj But with bandwdith prices in my juridiction, it was aking a stupid ammount of sense.
23:41 🔗 phillipsj *making
23:42 🔗 JAA :-/
23:42 🔗 JAA My condolences.
23:43 🔗 phillipsj Was thinking of doing a data-by mail service. I think my price-limit to avoid customs troubles on the costs of the media was about $50.
23:43 🔗 phillipsj It has improved some.
23:45 🔗 * phillipsj now has 'unlimited' bandwsidth. I think at the time I had a monthly 60GB data cap.
23:46 🔗 phillipsj or maybe 30GB
23:47 🔗 JAA Unlimited bandwidth would be great, but unlimited traffic at a high bandwidth is good enough. :-)
23:48 🔗 JAA How long ago did you have those caps?
23:56 🔗 phillipsj I dunno, but I remeber being frustrated that both remastering gnusense and downloading openstreammap would use up my monthly alloment. My have contributed to my interest in the Pirate Party (even though I don't really "pirate" much).
23:57 🔗 phillipsj *openstreetmap
23:58 🔗 phillipsj For a while I hosted a Bitcoin node on comercial Internet access with a 300GB cap. I think overages were like $1/GB if I went over.
23:59 🔗 phillipsj Limiting the number of connections, I was able to keep it to about 150GB/mo
