00:00 🔗 JAA :-|
00:01 🔗 phillipsj I paid overages for an archive team crawl on residential internet at one point as well (less steep, if I recall).
00:02 🔗 phillipsj probably around 2014 or 2015
00:05 🔗 phillipsj ..so constantly worrying about bandwidth for at least 10 years.
00:05 🔗 JAA Damn
00:07 🔗 JAA I never had to worry about that since moving from dial-up to DSL, and I've had "unlimited" (= fair use) symmetric 1 Gb/s fibre for a reasonable price for several years now.
00:09 🔗 phillipsj Well, the province built a "Supernet" as a public-private partnership. Guess which partnter got all the lucrative routes? I think they got some price lock-in for at least 10 years as well.
00:16 🔗 phillipsj "We offer the same pricing for everyone.", but don't appear to publish prices anymore. https://www.axiafibrenet.com/services/our-value
00:16 🔗 JAA "Nothing to see here, move along."
00:32 🔗 phillipsj I think I found the business prices: https://www.axia.com/plans
00:33 🔗 phillipsj you have to click the business tab
00:33 🔗 phillipsj Prices go up 20% for a 1 year plan.

01:38 🔗 phillipsj Phone company's (home) fiber plans have 1TB transfer limits without a 2 year plan.

02:28 🔗 kpcyrd can't have downtime during my netflix marathon
02:49 🔗 phillipsj MarkedL; you are allowed to share with yourt neigbours.
02:50 🔗 phillipsj Plus business plans are closer to the "real" price. they probably way ove-subscribe the consumer plans.
02:51 🔗 phillipsj Though the entry-level ones were about the same price as the consumer plans
02:52 🔗 phillipsj oh yeah: no bandwdith caps
02:53 🔗 phillipsj No server hosting though: against their TOS, even for business.
02:55 🔗 phillipsj "14. Reverse engineering of the Services high speed service is not permitted. This means that you cannot have a higher upload than download speed." https://www.telus.com/en/bc/support/article/internet-access-service-terms
02:57 🔗 phillipsj Downloading the Internet appears to be allowed though ;)
03:02 🔗 kpcyrd huh, what do they mean with "Reverse engineering of the Services high speed service"?
03:07 🔗 markedL I guess those are reasons. Just for that $400/month extra, one could get DOCSIS, LTE, and Satellite backup links, and a CCNA to plug in your ethernet cables
03:14 🔗 kpcyrd do people actually mention the CCNA in application/interviews?
03:14 🔗 kpcyrd it seems to be the CEH of networking
03:25 🔗 Stiletto kpcyrd: "Reverse engineering of the Services" probably dates from back when things like DOCSIS cable modems were easily hacked

03:49 🔗 markedL I thought Europe was more into certs than the US. In the US it is common in job postings for Network Engineer, and sometimes for SysAdmin but by boring/conservative companies. It's less mentioned at top tier companies who are very selective and then use a different set of preferred qualifications.
