15:22 🔗 atphoenix Raccoon, depending on the content in question, sometimes inferior media is needed to backfill gaps in better media. Gaps due to a multitude of causes...corruption, damage, editing choices, etc...,
15:23 🔗 Raccoon atphoenix, which is why it takes so long to get around to going through and deleting it :)
15:24 🔗 Raccoon always get hung up on some atrocity in the supposed-to-be-better media, forcing research and hesitation to delete
15:24 🔗 Raccoon then frustration and giving up on the rest of the endeavor
15:29 🔗 atphoenix it's only disk space :)
15:36 🔗 atphoenix the saving grace for datahoarders is that storage densities continue to increase. 512 GB microSD (165 mm^3) cards exist. Scale that up to a 2.5" drive (34925 mm^3) = 105 TB. Even if you lose 1/2 of that to controllers, space for cooling, etc, that's still 50 TB in a 2.5" form factor.
15:37 🔗 markedL $ / bit , is the ratio I feel is more important
15:46 🔗 JAA atphoenix: Nimbus ExaData DC
15:46 🔗 Raccoon microsd is the storage medium you use to smuggle data across national and geopolitical borders, in your bum
15:47 🔗 Raccoon though maybe someone could build a raid controller that uses a few thousand of them to speed things up
15:47 🔗 atphoenix My guess is that eventually flash memory will match and pass disk on price.
15:47 🔗 atphoenix Nimbus DC100 ... 100 TB in 3.5" https://www.anandtech.com/show/12541/unlimited-5-year-endurance-100-tb-ssd
15:48 🔗 Raccoon eventually, but hdd keeps making strides, even when scientists say that it's no longer possible.
15:48 🔗 Raccoon we reached peak-density in 2003!
15:49 🔗 JAA HolOGrAphIC sTorAGe iS jUSt aRoUNd ThE coRNeR, gUyS!
15:49 🔗 atphoenix part of price is operating costs (power), especially for online storage. Doesn't matter so much for cold storage.
15:49 🔗 Raccoon yes, still lamenting the neverealized petabyte laser storage sugar cube
15:50 🔗 JAA DNA would be wonderful for long-term cold storage. Still ridiculously expensive of course.
15:50 🔗 Raccoon but you have to store it in amber
15:50 🔗 Raccoon and splice it with frog dna to retrieve your data
15:51 🔗 JAA lol, yeah, and there are so many other problems with it.
15:51 🔗 atphoenix DNA even has built-in error correction. But sometimes errors happen and self-replicating cells propagate indefinitely (cancer). That bug needs fixing.
15:53 🔗 JAA I mean, DNA storage wouldn't involve cells at all.
15:54 🔗 atphoenix Cells or not, the error issues don't go away. Anyhow, I didn't realize they're actually working on using for storage. https://www.cnet.com/news/startup-packs-all-16gb-wikipedia-onto-dna-strands-demonstrate-new-storage-tech/
15:59 🔗 Wingy has joined #archiveteam-ot
15:59 🔗 Raccoon i'd still prefer an optical format with electron microscope levels of storage density, for thousand year data integrity
15:59 🔗 Raccoon even if it does read slow as tape
16:02 🔗 JAA lol, probably orders of magnitude slower. LTO is pretty fast.
16:14 🔗 Raccoon I wonder if magnetic storage could be done with phase array tech for no-moving-parts
16:30 🔗 Raccoon TIL my bluray of Beetlejuice is vertically stretched out of its natural aspect ratio, and now it's my mission to hunt down the asshat who did this. The DVD actually looks better.
16:32 🔗 Raccoon Someone ought to put together a team of archivists who preserve digital copies of motion pictures

16:52 🔗 qw3rty has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 745 seconds)
16:55 🔗 Raccoon that's pretty much what i'm seeing, and it doesn't look right.
16:56 🔗 Raccoon "but peepo own 1080p tvs and they don't want to feel like any of their screen is wasted!" :<
16:56 🔗 qw3rty has joined #archiveteam-ot
16:57 🔗 SootBectr If the review is correct, the picture isn't stretched
17:36 🔗 markedL btw there's a technique called anamorphic where for a movie frame would be stretched to maximize storage/transmission resolution, then it should be unstretched during playback. it's mostly used in projection
17:42 🔗 atphoenix I first encountered anamorphic with DVDs. I always thought pixels were square before that. But no.
