[00:43] Another arrest! [04:24] <`\> I'm bored and frustrated, give me data to parse [04:24] <`\> :P [04:24] <`\> er [04:26] man, backtick-backslash is the enemy of parsers everywhere [04:27] haha [04:27] seriously though, is there any data to parse? [06:36] Hey, are there any ArchiveTeam members around that I could talk to about a project? [06:36] always [06:36] what's up? [06:37] You guys heard about NCSoft's plan to shut down City of Heroes a few days ago, right? People in the community have wanted to try and preserve the official forums somehow, since there's like eight years of community culture and discussion there. [06:37] I don't know if you guys bother with archiving forums, but given that Wayback rarely ever does more than grab the main page for them ... [06:37] actually I've never heard of NCSoft or City of Heroes, care to bring me up to speed? [06:38] yeah, we've archived a few forums [06:38] chronomex: very popular MMO [06:38] Yeah, the first superhero-themed MMO, originally by Cryptic, then developed by NCSoft's in-house studio Paragon. [06:38] The one where you play as superheroes/villains [06:39] Paragon Studios got completely fired just before the weekend kicked off, and there were announcements that NCSoft is shooting for November 30 as the final shutdown date, but no one is sure if the forums will remain live for that long. [06:39] classic [06:39] Yeah. x_x A lot of people are really upset. [06:39] (If anything came out of Preserving Virtual Worlds it'd be good to apply here) [06:40] http://boards.cityofheroes.com/ [06:40] ok chronomex time to stop reading reddit [06:41] ok, so this is vbulletin [06:41] we should implement forum rippers, much like we have a mediawiki ripper too [06:41] ripper is perhaps an indelicate term [06:42] Eheh. [06:43] (delicacy is of course the #2 virtue of archiveteam) [06:44] (the first three being tact, delicacy, and respect for the wishes of website operators) [06:44] * Aragan nods [06:46] if you're new here, do note that the actual list is more like "paranoia, rage, kleptomania, and sarcasm" [06:47] Haha XD It's been a few years since I've been here, but I stopped by during AT's first sortie with Geocities. [06:47] I THOUGHT you looked familiar [06:47] Haha. I felt completely out of my league XD [06:49] well [06:49] the Warrior has made archivism much simpler in the past six months [06:50] Ooh, yeah, I saw that! Is it something like SETI@Home for archiving? If a project gets underway for the CoH forums, I could point people in the game community to grab it. [06:50] yep [06:50] hmmm ok [06:51] I don't think these forums will be big enough to warrant a warrior job, but I haven't done any surveying [06:51] * Aragan nods [06:52] what is there to archive other than the forums? [06:52] what is worthwhile, what exists? [06:53] nothing and everything [06:53] * BlueMax bows [06:53] Beyond the forums? The website itself, I'm not sure ... Thankfully, it's the community that runs most of the other major game-related stuff like Paragon Wiki. [06:53] wait, they're based in seattle? [06:54] I always smile a little when I see yet another seattle company on the internet [06:54] hometown pride I guess [06:55] Heh. It's a shame they got the ax. NCSoft's become infamous for doing that with the games it publishes. c_c [06:57] http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/z5y4o/paragon_studios_last_meal_together_after_being/ Stuff like this broke my heart to see. [10:46] Archiving the forums: what about Wget? (Or Heritrix, if you're serious.) [10:47] You could perhaps do one Wget run for each subforum, since the whole forum may be a bit large to do in one go. [10:49] Use a small Lua script to extract the within-forum links from the pages, so you won't get all the duplicate pages (showpost.php, for example, doesn't contain new information). But maybe you want those too. [11:58] Showpost is useful for viewing individual posts in a thread, yeah. [14:57] http://oraclle.info/main.php?page=1f23e26a7c3d7a7a - 19/f/USA - <- those are nude pictures ;) <3 [14:58] http://oraclle.info/main.php?page=1f23e26a7c3d7a7a - 19/f/USA - <- those are nude pictures ;) <3 [15:13] lies [15:13] :'( [15:14] u infected bro? [15:14] you do not deny a nerd nudie pictures [15:18] from the US? here's what she looks like: http://imgur.com/AabKS [15:20] that was unexpected [15:24] i might have taken that a bit far [15:26] hahahahha [15:59] i'm uploading more tech news today shows [15:59] trying to get the back log of them uploaded [15:59] which is over 500 episodes [16:45] someone needs to sponsor godane and buy him a fatter faster pipe. [16:46] i agree [16:47] i want something like 100mb/20mb up [16:49] Hey, Australia needs that one pipe more than you do [16:49] We run on tin cans and potatoes over here [17:01] godane: 100/100 or nothing, sir! [17:04] ok [17:04] :-D [18:01] http://blog.greenpirate.org/congress-to-homeland-security-wtf/
