Ah. We decided on a database method of storage because we were already familiar with SQL and could easily implement media & post archival without encountering a duplicate and because of the wide support for postgres. The capability to rapidly search is also a huge strength of using a database. |
04:19
🔗
|
yipdw |
accessibility is one of the major reasons WARC is usually preferred around here |

also doing incremental (offsite) backups using a single, massive file does not seem ideal for us |

we've been archiving tumblrs to warc for a couple years now with the archivebot |
04:24
🔗
|
yipdw |
simulating replay becomes difficult unless you have both the HTTP request and response, and once you have that you might as well just do WARC format |
04:25
🔗

Nertsy |
the thing is this though |
04:25
🔗
|
Nertsy |
how much storage are you wasting on duplicate data |
04:26

haven't counted, and so far it hasn't been an issue |
04:26
🔗
|
yipdw |
you don't have to fetch the site in its entirety |
04:26
🔗
|
yipdw |
if you track the URLs in each WARC (doable via a WARC index) you can use those as a basis for a delta |
04:26
🔗

but are you? is it by design to store things multiple times? |

04:28
🔗
|

as far as searching goes -- true, WARCs alone don't offer that, but you can index the text and graphics in them by running through each record |
04:29
🔗
|
yipdw |
Solr, Sphinx, full-text search mechanisms in MySQL/Postgres, similarity search for images, etc |
04:29
🔗
|

see but what is the value is wasting storage, losing support (WARC is not as popular as any SQL database), and sacrificing searching thorough posts? |

WARC is pretty popular in tools for web archiving, so I guess it depends on your context |
04:30

and if you want to search posts, dump the WARC responses in an SQL database and add a full-text search index |

I've received generally positive feedback, and also a few suggestions, most of which I applied more or less. See especially the second link. (For those few that I didn't agree with, I gave explanation why, but didn't get counter-replies.) There were no objections against the basic idea. |

When Pomf closed its doors, we received an influx of traffic that my server bandwidth was unable to sustain. So unfortunately, effective immediately, I am closing the doors of LiO Image Hosting. I could upgrade the server, throttle the image hosting, or auto-prune images, but I feel that wouldn't make me or you guys happy, so its probably best just to close my doors so you guys can go find something better for |
