Do torrents need to be remade after shuffle? https://catalogd.archive.org/history/wikipedia_visitor_stats_200801 |

Hi. |

Just curious about the Book Drive (When you donate a book to the Internet Archive). I know it is free, and you can not expect deadlines, but how long (estimated) does it take a book to be scanned if it is donated that way? |

Nemo_bis: Ops please |
18:21

|

It can take years for a book to be scanned |
18:21

Assuming it's unique |

There are plans to ramp the scanning from roughly 300,000 a year to millions |
18:22

Martini: also if it's not public domain it may not be visible for a long time. |

i recommend you scan it yourself if you need it, you can always upload the scans to IA |
18:22
🔗
|
xmc |
i've done this many times and can provide guidance to make a usable scan |
19:50

xmc, what do you recommend for scan. I don't have all the stuff that the IA has and with a flat bed scanner it is not nice to scan a book :) |

600 dpi, full color |
20:16
🔗
|
xmc |
tiff if you have the space, maximum quality jpeg otherwise |
20:16
🔗
|
xmc |
flatbed is unfortunately the way to do it |
20:19

xmc: I haven't found any domestic technique to scan books that is on my budget. Specially for thick softcover books. |
20:22
🔗
|
xmc |
what is your budget |
20:27

Martini |
$100. |

What about this kind of scanners. Does it really works? https://www.amazon.com/Ipevo-Ziggi-HD-High-Definition-Document-CDVU-06IP/dp/B01530XGMA/ |
20:30
🔗
|
xmc |
i would not trust it |
20:30

Martini |
It is not like I'm trying to scan a historical document. Just something that can be read. |
20:31
🔗
|
xmc |
are you doing this a lot |
20:31
🔗
|
xmc |
how much do you care about the physical document |
20:31
🔗
|
xmc |
is it rare, what is it |
20:33
🔗
|
Martini |
It is not rare or historical. |
20:34
🔗
|
Martini |
I want to do it with some five books. |
20:35
🔗
|
xmc |
well given your constraints you have some shitty options |
20:35
🔗
|
xmc |
1. flat bed scanner + 5 hours of flipping the book over and over |
20:36
🔗
|
xmc |
2. digital camera on some kind of holder, which is what that wing thing is |
20:36
🔗
|
xmc |
3. hire a copy/print shop to do #1 |
20:36
🔗
|
xmc |
4. guillotine the spine off and use a sheetfeeder |
20:38
🔗
|
Martini |
I think it can be interesting #2. |
20:38
🔗
|
xmc |
that is the lowest quality |
20:38
🔗
|
xmc |
now to be fair |
20:38
🔗
|
Martini |
I will check for that "wing thing" or somekind of tripod arm. |
20:38
🔗
|
xmc |
i scanned a 300 page book in 90 minutes with #1 |
20:39
🔗
|
xmc |
i was talking about the ziggi widget |
20:39
🔗
|
Martini |
The issue with #1 is that I need a bigger flatbed scanner. |
20:39
🔗
|
xmc |
you can scan page at a time instead of spread at a time |
20:40
🔗
|
xmc |
the big constraint in that is time per scan |
20:45
🔗
|
Martini |
Any recommendations on the scan software? |
20:47
🔗
|
xmc |
vuescan is good i think |
20:54
🔗
|
Martini |
I will also give it a try. Thanks |
