14:58 🔗 lostcat In 2015 there was a page on internet archive but now it's not, any idea what could have happened, does stuff sometimes just get lost?
15:23 🔗 lostcat anyone here
15:23 🔗 lostcat SketchCow

15:47 🔗 JAA I haven't heard of IA actually losing data, but I'd be very interested if it ever happened. I do think that the setup of mirror HDDs, while very simple, is quite risky because a disk failure means that the only disk holding another copy of the same data gets stressed a lot during the restore.
15:48 🔗 JAA But I have seen snapshots disappear from the Wayback Machine. I asked them about it and was told that there were problems with the index. That might be the case here as well.
15:48 🔗 JAA Probably best to email info@archive.org with as much information as possible so they can look into it.
15:48 🔗 JAA lostcat: ^
15:51 🔗 SketchCow We have not lost the data.
15:52 🔗 SketchCow Chances are you remember the URL differently, or we shifted playback code and the URL is not being rendered, falsely.
15:52 🔗 SketchCow Giving me the URL will help.
15:57 🔗 lostcat sent thank you
16:31 🔗 lostcat I got the most unhelpful reply
16:31 🔗 lostcat from the email I mean
16:31 🔗 lostcat If we have captures of the site you are looking for, you would be able to find it by searching for the url at web.archive.org. After entering the url, use the timeline on top to navigate the year, and the calendar display below to select the date(s) you are interested in viewing. Dates with a circular highlight on them indicate available archives. What you see listed there is what we have).
16:32 🔗 lostcat it makes me feel like they didn't read what I said at all
16:56 🔗 Somebody2 Heh, they get a lot of very silly emails -- and have very few people to respond to them. Even if yours wasn't, they likely thought it worth trying the default reply first.
16:57 🔗 Somebody2 I presume you don't want to share the URL here, in public...

17:00 🔗 lostcat these all worked in April 2015 and now give errors as if they were never there
17:03 🔗 lostcat I even got those links originally by browsing through the forum on the internet archive because it had a much bigger list of intact pages, it seems nearly all of them just got lost :[ I worry about the integrity of the whole thing if they can just lose stuff like that I've been using http://archive.is/ and I felt so bad about it because I feel like there's going to be no happy ending and they've just destroyed their own data
17:23 🔗 Somebody2 There is no happy ending. There is merely a better middle than what might have happened otherwise. Always keep your own copies of anything you care about.
17:23 🔗 Somebody2 Preferably multiple.

17:51 🔗 lostcat I usually use that other site now I've noticed on the internet it gets linked to a lot more than the internet archive isn't seen as reliable because of stuff like this :[ I also use https://wikipedia.org/wiki/ScrapBook now but yeah I trusted the internet archive I thought it was big and kept backups, that stuff is from when I was at school ;[
