21:20 🔗 lucassz Hi! I'm looking to upload some important content not available elsewhere to Archive.org, and I was wondering what the difference between "freeze" and "dark" was? Or where I could find documentation on this?
21:20 🔗 astrid has joined #internetarchive
21:20 🔗 JAA I don't think you'll find any documentation on that.
21:20 🔗 astrid lucassz: what items are in play?
21:20 🔗 lucassz University course materials
21:20 🔗 JAA sets mode: +o astrid
21:21 🔗 astrid i mean, links please
21:21 🔗 lucassz That I doubt I'd be allowed to share, but probably would be ok 10 years from now
21:21 🔗 lucassz Don't have links yet, sorry
21:21 🔗 lucassz haven't uploaded anything yet
21:21 🔗 astrid so wait i think i missed part of the question
21:21 🔗 lucassz e.g. lecture slides
21:21 🔗 lucassz Oh I'm wondering if I can mark something as freeze/dark
21:21 🔗 lucassz and if so what the difference between the two is
21:21 🔗 lucassz I read about them in the metadata documentation
21:21 🔗 astrid i think freeze is "people can see that it exists but not look at it"
21:22 🔗 lucassz Because I couldn't have it be visible at time of upload
21:22 🔗 lucassz ah
21:22 🔗 astrid while dark is definitely for sure "we do not talk about this"
21:22 🔗 lucassz Ok and I could upload this stuff as dark?
21:22 🔗 astrid you cannot dark a thing yourself
21:22 🔗 astrid you have to involve an archive.org employee
21:22 🔗 JAA What you can certainly do is hide it from the search index.
21:22 🔗 lucassz Ah, could I request to have a darked collection that I could then upload things into?
21:22 🔗 astrid yes you can mark it with noindex=1 metadata
21:22 🔗 lucassz Not sure hiding from the index would be enough
21:22 🔗 JAA If someone knows the URL or your username, they could still find it though.
21:22 🔗 lucassz Would need to make it not accessible
21:23 🔗 lucassz But I still want Internet Archive to have it
21:23 🔗 lucassz To be released a long time from now
21:23 🔗 lucassz Is something like that possible?
21:23 🔗 lucassz I appreciate the help btw
21:23 🔗 astrid talk to info@archive.org and ask if they can help you with uploading to a temporarily-dark item
21:24 🔗 astrid i'm not sure if they have a time-release option but maybe?
21:24 🔗 lucassz Is the point of darked items not to have them released eventually?
21:24 🔗 lucassz Ok I will email if that would be the best way
21:24 🔗 astrid dark is ... the archive does not have a way to delete things, the technology does not allow it
21:24 🔗 astrid so they dark things like spam, copyright infringement, etc
21:25 🔗 astrid and they also use this mechanism to hide uploaded items for a time
21:25 🔗 lucassz Ah, I thought I had read elsewhere that the intention was to undark them, e.g. when they enter public domain
21:25 🔗 astrid i know of some very large dark collections, for example
21:26 🔗 lucassz Basically I just want to make sure my own data security isn't the bottleneck of this stuff being preserved
21:26 🔗 * astrid nods
21:26 🔗 lucassz Does a lot of the ArchiveTeam stuff get darked?
21:26 🔗 astrid not very much at all
21:26 🔗 lucassz when it's copyrighted
21:26 🔗 lucassz oh
21:27 🔗 astrid sometimes yes
21:27 🔗 astrid but it's not very common
21:27 🔗 lucassz I see, here I would need it bc they might know it came from me etc
21:27 🔗 lucassz so I need a way to secure it privately for 10+ years
21:27 🔗 * astrid nods quietly
21:28 🔗 Dj-Wawa has joined #internetarchive
21:31 🔗 lucassz I'll try to research more to see if there's some kind of stated policy on what I can and can't do with this content
21:31 🔗 lucassz as you can imagine most unis don't even think to address this
21:31 🔗 lucassz like what I can do with lecture slides
21:35 🔗 Igloo has joined #internetarchive
21:36 🔗 Igloo I didn't even know this channel as a thing.
21:37 🔗 JAA Legally, unless something else is stated, chances are that the copyright lies with the person who made the slides (which may or may not be the lecturer) or the university institution, depending on the contract between those two, and any redistribution beyond the intended use for a particular lecture would be a copyright infringement. But I know plenty of lecturers though who would be happy about
21:37 🔗 JAA getting their materials redistributed and read by more people, and I also know plenty of people in academia who don't give a shit about copyright (the unis themselves might be different though; I'm talking about the scientific staff). Very, very few explicitly communicate that by e.g. applying a CC license though; I've only seen it personally on lectures which were about copyright or similar topics
21:37 🔗 JAA like digital rights.
21:37 🔗 JAA Oh, also, if the lecturers use materials accompanying a commercial book for example, you'd be much more likely to get into trouble for redistribution.
21:43 🔗 lucassz Not accompanying a textbook. You're right, talking to the professors might be a good idea
21:44 🔗 lucassz For context, I go to Harvard, and I think many of the lecture slides I have are content that's basically not available anywhere else
21:44 🔗 lucassz However I could imagine the uni having a very indirect commercial interest in not sharing them
21:44 🔗 JAA If it's individual lectures, yeah, I'd do that.
21:44 🔗 JAA Also try to figure out perhaps who owns the copyright.
21:45 🔗 lucassz Yeah, I have the copyright policy for faculty bookmarked, I'll read it soon
21:45 🔗 JAA (Probably not by asking the lecturers since in my experience they rarely know.)
21:45 🔗 JAA Right :-)
21:46 🔗 lucassz I just basically know for sure that there's at least some things I won't be allowed to share, but it sounds from what you've said that by talking to the folks at archive.org I could create a dark collection
21:49 🔗 lucassz Btw what is the intended purpose of #archiveteam vs. #archiveteam-bs?
21:53 🔗 astrid #archiveteam is for announcements, shouldn't be more than one or two screenfuls every day
21:53 🔗 astrid -bs is for lengthy discussion
21:53 🔗 astrid -ot is for things that aren't relevant to archiveteam business or projects
