01:51 🔗 Somebody2 The idea behind pre-generating and storing the derived formats is that processes might become unavailable, but bitstrings are bitstrings.
01:52 🔗 Somebody2 IA does re-generate the derived files intermittently, when they get around to it.
01:53 🔗 Somebody2 But the advantage of storing them, rather than generating them on-demand, is that if an encoder becomes temporarily or permanently unavailable -- they still have the previous results.
01:53 🔗 Somebody2 vs on-demand meaning that anytime the encoder isn't available, suddenly *all* the items aren't available in that format.
01:54 🔗 Somebody2 Which is mostly harmless -- unless all the other formats (including the ones the originals are in) have become sufficiently obscure that no-one remembers how to decode them.
01:55 🔗 Somebody2 But with storing the derived files, as long as *one* of the formats is still understood, the item can still be read, no matter how accessible or inaccessible any encoders are.
01:56 🔗 Somebody2 I am *certain* that if/when IA does get short of space, derived files in less-common formats will be first on the chopping block.
01:57 🔗 Somebody2 But they aren't, AFAIK, short of space right now.

04:02 🔗 Ryz Interesting, a new minor development on the Save Page side of things (when finding a page that WBM doesn't have), not only the text seems to be more polished, there's now a button-like look that says 'Save this url in the Wayback Machine' rather than a link~
04:04 🔗 Ryz I was using that feature yesterday and the day before where it had the old version~
04:10 🔗 OrIdow6 Looks like a new style of buttons too

04:14 🔗 Ryz Wondering if it's more than just a cosmetic change...
04:18 🔗 OrIdow6 Does it behave differently?
04:24 🔗 Ryz It does the same action, maybe in the code it does something to maybe to attempt to thwart bad bots?

07:54 🔗 OrIdow6 Newest IA newsletter subject: "Get out of the house"
07:54 🔗 OrIdow6 Maybe I should set my (desktop) email client to display the sender before the subject
07:56 🔗 OrIdow6 Because that's obviously a strange message to get without knowing the context
07:58 🔗 OrIdow6 (Though I don't mean to imply that only emails from the IA, and no one else, have had an effect like this)
08:13 🔗 Nemo_bis OrIdow6: I'm glad I'm not alone... it felt like an eviction notice to me.
08:14 🔗 Nemo_bis Rather distasteful given that in a week from now millions of people in USA will not have money to pay rent, but maybe it's just me.
08:18 🔗 Nemo_bis To be fair, IA is only now starting to copy the Wikimedia Foundation style in fundraising emails, which are pure terrorism
